Sept. 2, 1995
Michael Jackson was alone at the top in 1995. The King of Pop saw his ballad "You Are Not Alone" debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart 12 years ago. Cool, right? There’s more. Accompanied by its infamous $7 million music vid featuring then-wife Lisa-Marie Presley, the tune is the first single in Billboard history to open at the top spot. It only stayed there for a week and is currently the last of MJ’s 13 No. 1 hits, but the song would also lead the pack on the R&B charts and go platinum. Michael’s not alone with the first-week sales honor anymore. Since then, eleven other singles have debuted in first place.
