Kym Johnson’s DWTS Diary: How I Got Donny Osmond to Wear Velvet

kympicabDancing with the Stars pro Kym Johnson has teamed up with OK! to update you every week on the triumphs and travails as she attempts to turn her celeb partner Donny Osmond into a ballroom champion!

Hi, everyone! Welcome to the sixth week of my OK! Dancing with the Stars blog! Well, as you all know, this week, Donny and I got a score of 25 out of 30 for a third place for our jive. Only Mya and Aaron Carter scored more, with 27 points each. I was so happy with our performance! Donny was, too, and told me he didn’t want the dance to end.

Monday night, we just wanted to have fun after working really hard for three days on the dance. Donny was drained by the end of rehearsals because it’s such a fast dance and of course he still had to do his Las Vegas show this week as usual. We did the hard work in rehearsals, and then came to the ballroom to enjoy it. It really paid off. I wasn’t sure what the judges were going to say, though. We had a guest judge in Baz Luhrmann and you never know how they are going to react. When the judges starting talking, though, all our doubts disappeared. Donny said it was like a weight being taken off his shoulders hearing all the praise.

I decided to have Donny wear a velvet suit for the dance, which was a bit of a gamble. I mean, doing the most energetic dance there is in velvet? Donny thought I made the right decision because he looked smart, but backstage, he admitted he was sweating bullets because it doesn’t breathe very well. Meanwhile, I loved my towering white boots, which were custom-made by the DWTS wardrobe department. That’s the first time they’ve had to make boots specifically for the show and they’re very elaborate with boning in the sides. I want to keep them! I don’t know if they’ll let me.

While I chose our costumes, the producers selected our music, “Secret Agent Man.” We originally were going to go for more of an Austin Powers theme, but since the judges criticized us a little for being too theatrical last week, we decided to tone it down and do more of a straight jive—but with a little ‘60s throwback vibe.

I put together some 1960s choreography, and then in one of the rehearsals, Donny’s son Don suggested we put in that John Travolta, Pulp Fiction inspired V-sign move. Don looks like the spitting image of his father and he can take credit for that, as judge Bruno Tonioli praised us for the Travolta touch!

We weren’t disappointed at being behind Mya and Aaron, because we improved and the show is about improving each week.

I enjoyed having a fellow Aussie, Baz Luhrmann, as a guest judge this week. He’s one of the best things to come out of Australia. Of course he wouldn’t know this because my part was so small, but I was actually a dancing “extra” on his movie Strictly Ballroom when I was just 13 years old. I didn’t know at the time it would become such a huge hit movie—and there we both were again on Dancing with the Stars.

Last week, as my blog photo shows, it was cool meeting LaToya Jackson, who is covering the show for TV and was in the audience. Donny has known all the Jackson family members for years; the two incredible family singing groups have stayed friends.

Well, hope you all keep watching and voting and I’ll talk to you next week!

I’ll try again. Lost first post. You and Donny were fantastic last night. Loved both your costumes just right for your dance. (you’re right the boots were great). Donny looks good in velvet. Perfect dance for the music loved the 60’s theme and James Bond. You and Donny deserved the same score if not higher than Mya and Aaron. We were so worried when we heard Donny fell in dress rehearsal. And then we had to wait until the end. But they saved the best for last you and Donny. I just don’t understand why you don’t get the scores you deserves. You and Donny are so good together. Look forward to see what you come up with each week. We at Donny.com know how good you and Donny are together and look forward to many more dances. Enjoy your blog and your wonderful dance rountines. Donny and Kym dancing toether on t.v it can’t get any better than. Until next time….

I like Donny and Kim’s costumes were great, as were Aaron and Karina’s. Once I realized they were Kermit and Miss Piggy, I laughed til I cried! I thought Aaron and Karina’s performance was the highlight of the show. Fun, energetic, technically right on and I’m glad the judges thought so too! Mya was beautiful, I enjoyed it, but I didn’t think the energy level was as good as it could be. Donny was great too, but technically it was not quite up to the standard of Mya and Aaron-so I understand the difference in scores. I suspect that Aaron, Mya and Donny will be the top three, unless either an injury or complete loss of interest and stamina change what these three contestants are bringing to the table in the first two shows…

Loved reading your diary and getting some behind the scenes info! The boots were amazing. I can see why you would want to keep them!!! I am hoping that you and Donny can go all the way and win the mirrorball trophy this season. You definitely deserve it after coming so close a couple times!

    Hi Kym,

Another fellow Donny.commar here!! As KimSPin said in her post you really did wow the judges with all aspects of this routine! I know I am speaking for thousands when I say we couldn’t be prouder of what we saw on the ballroom floor last night. The costumes were great and I hope you do wear the high boots again for the two-step if that dance comes into play for you. I think the key to winning this thing is to each week step up the Wow-Factor of your routine. I promise you Donny will deliver if you “bring it”! Alot of the pressure is on you because Karina is in this to win at all costs!! Please continue to always add just a touch of theatrics to the dance while still staying in the dance itself. I think if you can end each dance with one last incredible move it will stick in the minds of the fans and viewers. As Bruno said last night…”well pitched, well executed Agent Osmond”!!You played it just right and not too much with the John Travolta move! Finally, Carrie ann said” This is why the name Osmond carries so much weight in this business because that was an amazing performance Donny”. Now the bar has been raised and as Carrie-anne said “keep up what you are doing”. That said, you must bring that same type of brillant performance each week Kym. I am looking forward to the WOW you bring to next weeks routine…..remember Karina is out to take that trophy…don’t let her win. Kym, you are a much more technically sound dancer than Karina…..we all know and see that….so BRING IT ON…..!!!!Thanks for uping the routine to such a great height this week and in the weeks to come!!!!!! Your moves are making Donny truly shine and we are loving every minute of it all!! Continue to push for greatness and it will be yours …keep your eyes on the prize!!!!

    The JIVE was brilliant :)
Well deserved scores and if it wasn’t so early on in the competition they would have been your 10s.

    Have FUN :)

As usual, you and Donny were amazing! Loved watching your rehearsals and of course, reading your blogs. I’ve started to write my own blogs about you two as well. In fact, I need to get to the blog about last night today! You were absolutely stunning in your costume and Donny looked fantastic as well. More people are voting for you and if you just keep it up and more people vote like crazy, you’ll get that trophy! You’re up for some tough competition in Mya and Aaron but I know you guys can bring it on every week. Don’t let Donny or yourself get stressed out with the pressure you feel, have fun, make sure he remembers the techniques and posture and just let us worry about the voting! I’m doing what it takes to get you that trophy you deserve!!!

    Love your blogs!

I don’t like that photo with Latoya, though. I (and many others) thought she was unnecessarily rude to Donny - she accused him of cheating, for gosh sake. It was very unbecoming (and not to mention fed rumors that weren’t true) - all for publicity.

    Keep writing! Thanks!

    Kym,

I just loved the Secret Agent theme! Great song. Your boots are unique and were perfect for the song. You and Donny Osmond were so tune with each other and very fluid with the dance moves. I am amazed at this 51 year old entertainer who can dance like he does. Now, we all know he has dancing ability from all his years of peforming, yet he is probably used to more “group” choreographed moves while singing. But the level of competition is so great this season, it amazes me how dedicated he is to the task at hand, especially while still performing his show in Las Vegas. I have heard some say he is full of himself, and conceited. I do not see that at all. I see someone who is self-conscious and concerned with how he is performing. I see someone who reprimands himself if something is not pefect. Kym, you are a fantastic teacher, and dancer. I have visted Australia and am so proud to see such talent come from such a magical country. Keep up the fabulous entertainment!
