David Spade responded to Asylum about the negative comments made about his new Direct TV ad featuring his friend and deceased actor Chris Farley. “When Direct TV came to me and the Farley family with this idea about Tommy Boy, we talked and thought it would be a cool way to remind people just how funny Chris was,” David explained.
“It is a clever homage to my friend and a movie that we loved doing.”
The ad features Chris in his “fat guy in a little coat scene” from his movie Tommy Boy co-starring David.
Chris died in 1997 of heart failure due to an overdose and reactions to the ad say it is tasteless and that David is selling out his dead friend’s memory.
A spokesperson for Direct TV stated, “We should look to Chris’ family and friends for the ultimate opinion on this subject. They were involved from the beginning of this project and felt that the spot was a great to tribute to Chris.”

The commercial was funny and showed how funny Chris and David were together.
God Bless Chris…. a good person with addiction problems!
Mike
have to admit chris was one of the greats but i agree with the folks that said they took this a bit to far it is nice to see a great actor or actress but let the people rest in peace
I for one will never forget the Rolling Stone article David Spade did a month before Chris Farley died where he ripped Chris to shreds. David Spade is a classless tool who doesn’t deserve to be in a commercial or anywhere near Chris Farley’s likeness.
It is a great tribute to a funny man. It is not in bad taste at all.
I read that Rolling Stone article too! I always secretly wondered if it was that article that pushed Chris to the edge. Yes, we all know he had many vices but when your partner and best friend publically humilates you like that, how do you get past it? maybe you don’t…
I still don’t like it. If it were me, I wouldn’t want my image/work used to sell products without my say so. And being dead, I couldn’t give my say so. So.. if my family’s reading, please don’t put me in commercials after I’m dead. Thank you.
Why not just do a “Joe Dirt” spot, Spade?
Oh, that’s right . . . cuz you suck!
Enjoy riding Farleys corpse all the way to the bank.
A tribute is a retrospective of his work, or an homage in film, this is a commercial, it’s just cash in people’s pockets.

To be honest, I was a bit shocked when I first saw the commercial. I really didn’t see it as a tribute, instead it reminded me of a tragic loss. It was a bit creepy.
I liked it, it wasnt tasteless for if it was then you should look down upon Forrest Gump and the CGI scene with JFK and Tom Hanks. Personally it was very well done, for at the end of the commercial David states and I quote “Ha ha that never gets old” Showing that even in death Chris could still make people laugh. Everyone is going to have an opinion, either way get over it.
Shoulda just waited until the people who loved Chris Farley as teens and twenty somethings were old farts, so when they complained about ‘poor taste,’ their grand kids could just go ’shut up grandma, you’re old and there’s a funny fat man on the 3Dvision.’
