Dancing with the Stars pro Kym Johnson has teamed up with OK! to update you every week as she attempts to turn her partner Donny Osmond into a ballroom champion!
Hi, everyone! Welcome to week 11 of my OK! diary, in which Donny and I had to find a way to perform through his bout with flu symptoms.
The flu has hit the DWTS cast very hard this season, as Derek Hough and Mark Ballas came down with it, and, this week, Lacey Schwimmer was the victim, having to sit it out while Anna Trebunskaya performed with her partner, Mark Dacascos on Monday night.
So I was holding my breath after Donny started feeling ill this week. When we took to the ballroom floor for our quick step routine, I didn’t know what to expect. I told Donny before the dance, hang on to me and I’ll lead you, and, as usual, Donny exceeded my expectations. He was feeling so bad and yet did so well! We still got a strong score, a 24, as Donny’s professionalism came through and we grooved along to the famous dance anthem, “Sing, sing, sing.”
The judges pointed out his mistakes, which Donny and I knew were there. But Donny told me he could barely tell the ceiling from the floor in his flu-like condition, so we’re very happy we got through it. We also helped our Team Tango get a 28, and it took the pressure off us to be able to dance in a group. All in all, it was a good night.
This week was so challenging for Donny and me as he started feeling ill during rehearsals. The quick step is a really crazy, energetic dance that uses everything you’ve got, so was stressful keeping the energy up. We had to rehearse the Team Tango with Derek and Joanna and Louis and Kelly. It was really nice working together as a team but the two dances were really strenuous for Donny this week, in his condition and also having to do his Las Vegas show. He was so tired.
Luckily, I’M feeling fine at the moment! There’s no time whatsoever for rest but I’m taking lots of vitamins and drinking a lot of water. My mom is still in town so she’s looking out for me.
Another thing that gave me a lift this week is that I was able to announce I’m going to be making my debut on Broadway in Burn the Floor after this season’s DWTS is over. It starts November 27. If Donny and I are lucky enough to make the final, that would finish on Tuesday, and then I’d go into the show in Friday.
I was actually in the original workshop of Burn the Floor in 1998, so it’s really nice to be back in the show now that it’s on Broadway. In 1998, I was living in London and had gotten a scholarship to study dance there. I was competing, but I wanted to perform onstage and I heard about Burn the Floor and they asked me if I would be in the workshop. It became a full-fledged show and we toured the world with it. I did that for six years before the Australian version of DWTS. This time, they just called and asked if I’d be interested and I said, of course I would!
Now that I’ll be doing Burn the Floor, I’m looking forward to having Christmas in New York this year. My mom and dad are probably both going to come over for Christmas and see me in the show. Usually, I spend Christmas by the pool in Australia because it’s summertime back home. I hope it snows in New York so I can have a white Christmas!
Well, hope you’re still voting, everyone! Talk to you again soon!

Kym once again you and Donny were fantastic. And the judges praised you and again gave you the wrong scores. Really enjoyed your dance. Donny may have been sick but you wouldn’t have known it during the dance. Team Tango what can I say you all did a more than fantastic job on it. Donny really shined on the team. He kept up with Derek and Louis and you lady did very well again. Congrads on your Broadway show. Hopefully the low scores the judges keep giving you doesn’t effect the voting because all of us at Donny.com know that you and Donny both deserve to stay in the competition and dance to the finals. Here’s hoping for more wonderful dances for you and Donny.
I already posted my comment above. I am hoping that someone besides me will start posting on Kym’s blog. I do it every week. It’s a great place to show Kym and Donny some suport. They did a wonderful job last night. And once again they did not get the scores they should have by the judges. Even though Donny was sick Kym did had a dance for them and they performed it better than the 24 score they recieved. Team Tango with Donny and Kym was “Hot” Donny even though he said the room was spinning kept up with Derek and Louis just like he was a pro too. And now we get to see it again tonight as an “encore”. Hopefully the judges low scores haven’t hurt Donny in the voting. And we get to see more “fab” dances from Donny and Kym.
Sending healing wishes your way Donny!
I thought Donny and Kym were awesome this week. I can not get over the energy that Donny has. He like the energizer bunny. My best to both of you!!
As usual, you guys were great in the quickstep! Donny is an amazing guy and knows how to surprise everyone. No matter what he has going or how he feels, he just keeps right on going. Goes to show that over 40 years in the business really pays off! Looks like you were underscored again. I’m not an expert so I didn’t see any mistakes but you’re the pro so you know better than me!
I know you used to be in the production, “Burn The Floor” and that’s so great that you’re going to be back there! I’m sure they’ll be glad to see you again. Spending time in Australia in the summer sounds great but our jobs come first! Glad you are doing well and not getting the flu right now. Knock on wood! So keep doing what you’re doing because every week, you get more and more support from fans and before you know it, you’ll get that trophy!
Can’t wait for your next blog! Til then be careful and take care of yourself and Donny!
You both are doing a wonderful job. Loving every minute of it!
I usually agree with the scores, more or less, but giving MIchael a 23 (it was his best, but I think the judges overscored him becasue it was such a jump compared to previous routines) and then Donny a 24- no way. I saw the mistakes on your dance, but weighing that with the complicated steps and his showmanship, there was no way the 2 dances were just 1 point apart. Either Michael’s (and I love Kelly, but Kelly’s) should have been a little lower, or you guys shou d have been a bit higher. It was at least on par with Mya’s 25. She is technically good, but just does not show it off and have the charissma during the dance like you 2 do. I also thought aaron’s was actually a little sloppy at times-maybe more like a 27-28. But at least he showed it off. Anyhow, I sound like a dance judge wannabe, but anyhow, you are doing great. I think once Donny is better he can actually handle more difficult routines and can blow the others out of the water.
