Full disclosure: I have read all four books of The Twilight Saga a few times — I’m a fast reader, I swear — and I’ve always ranked New Moon as my least favorite (this also should warn you that the following review might just be a bit less impartial than say, The New York Times). Nonetheless, I’ve been pretty excited to see the movie version. Okay, I’ve been really, super, almost shamefully excited… and it didn’t definitely disappoint tonight.
One reason New Moon the book originally earned the “eh” review from me was the fact that for most of it, the perfectly swoon-worthy Edward Cullen is gone, replaced in Bella Swan’s company with Jacob Black. Conversations with friends went something like,”Ugh, Jacob keeps pushing Bella” and, “Oh I know! Obviously, Bella likes Edward better, Jacob, get over it.” But in the movie, I’ve got to admit, Taylor Lautner’s Jake to Kristen Stewart’s Bella is utterly perfect, in every way.
The often discussed chemistry between these two young stars is there — well, it’s not so much there as it dominates their intimate scenes together, fairly breathing with a life of its own during those moments where the audience can practically see Jacob’s feelings leaping through his eyes. These two aren’t actors anymore in this movie, they are Jacob and Bella. Both of them are young, but unlike Twilight, where it seemed like Kristen was nervous to inhabit Bella, and Taylor was a nonentity, they’ve disappeared into their roles.
Kristen no longer relies as heavily on those sighs and stutters and the awkward hair fidgeting. She’s luminous, both in her sadness and in the joy of being with Edward. As for Taylor, you can practically feel the 108 degrees of heat he gives off as a werewolf. Let’s just say, all that working out suits him well (ahem, he’s still only 17).
That’s not to slight Robert Pattinson as Edward. Oh no, far from it — Robert moves from just being a pretty British face jumping around the forest and throwing tree branches to fully realizing the invincible, cold marble being who is so in love with a human, he could never take her soul. Gone is the faintly sweaty “sparkle” from the first installment and the silly spider monkey lines, and the audience is left with the Edward of the books. All those R-Pattz fanatics out there will have more than enough fodder for countless daydreams and wishful sighs, even if he is a hallucination for most of the movie.
Gone too, are those cheesy special effects from the first flick. The werewolves are astoundingly real, and genuinely scary. From the previews one might think they’d turn out overly CGI-ish, but some magic must have been performed between those trailers and the finished perfect, because every wolfish hair is flawless. The vampires’ effects too, are vastly improved, as Victoria flips effortlessly into the air and Edward almost flies to protect Bella from the Volturi guard.
Another point for the filmmakers, especially director Chris Weitz, is the fact that New Moon the movie follows its book counterpart so closely, you’ll be hard-pressed to find those few instances where it does stray. It won’t matter in the end. I can basically guarantee that any fan will leave this movie with a huge, happy grin on their face.
Now excuse me while I go reread Eclipse and wait impatiently for June 2010, and the release of the next movie.

Just saw a special screening of the New Moon movie and it was great. Apparently so did the crowd in the screening. Great job and don’t listen to those bad reviews some critics have given the movie. They simple haven’t read the books and don’t understand the movie.
actually i have read all the books about a hundred times and was very disappointed in the movie (so was the rest of the theater i was in) it was filled with horrilble acting and most of the best points made in the book were not there in the movie. they did not focus enough on the pain bella felt for edward leaving her or how horrible she looked physically when she came to jacob that first day or the intensity of the whole ripping through her stomach every time jacob mentioned the cullens, or the fear she felt when she learned victoria was still after her, or the cliff dive… in the book this was a big moment (although in the movie every event that was happening while bell was jumping as far as charlie and harry in the woods was kool) but bella or (kirstan stewart) did a horrible job conveying that emotion. or when edward and jacob are talking at the end in the book this was a big deal but in the movie the actors just rushed through it. and another thing is the vampire powers that they show are done so weakly and just completly petty. they could have done a way better job, also you could tell that it was done in another location becuase they sun in shining a lot more and its not at all the picture the first movie painted for forks and in the book when bella spends time with jake it is most always raining. and finally the scene when edward and bella are running in the forest could have been so much better, just because they put sparkly crap on bella doesnt mean she looks like a vampire or edward for that matter they look like two upercalss snoby adults running the woods. everyone in the theater laughed.
i have read the books more times than i can recall nd listened to the auido books im a twilight fanatic but i felt the film missed out alot and added in stuff that was pointless, ie bella emailing alice lik wat was that about, i watched the film over and prob over again but i though after so many bad reviews for changing twilight so much tat they would actually stick to the book this time but guess not!! maybe for elcispe i hope
I’m happy that critics can think straight and not like teenagers.
Ty Burr of The Boston Globe : “Sorry, girls: The thrill is gone.”
Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times “The connection between these two is so self-evidently non-romantic that it turns out not to be much of a diversion.”
agree, people, but it don’t stop teenagers to spend millions on merchandise
First of all, it’s not a teen specific phenomenon. The largest fan base are mothers. It’s not that they are thinking straight they’re coming from a bias of what they feel should be important to the public. Their articles are ego driven of what they feel people should be reading, watching, and spending their money on.
All they manage to do is ruin their own credibility with the larger public as the majority of the public lean toward your blockbuster type movies that are easily accessible to the every day person. Not everything has to be obscure, overly-symbolic, foreign/independent film.
We should just be happy that in these technology soaked teenagers put down their phone to pick up not just one book but four.
I LOVE YOU ROB.EVEN I’M MARRIED I COULD LEAVE MY HUSBAND FOR YOU……I THINK!!!!!I’M NOT SURE !
I LOVE YOU ROB!I COULD LEAVE MY HUSBAND FOR YOU……..I THINK!!
I don’t care about some of the bad reviewes. Critics are bad actors that didn’t succed.
Loved twillight and I’m sure that I’m going to love New Moon too.
My comment was for Lana
It’s farily obvious while reading the reviews that the critics did not understand the movie. I was a little sad for them that they couldn’t appreciate the beauty of the Edward/Bella relationship..
that is one thing i will say good about this movie is that edward and bella scenes together were very beautiful and passionate.
Harry Potter is also eurasian junk, just like Twilight. Taylor Lautner is a eurasian actor, NOT an actual American. This is why Twilight never sold in America and the Americans have never even heard of the thing. This is no different than the other mentioned series. Like the way 2012 was made by germans and NOT by Americans and was never even seen in America.
first off twilight is heard all over america its the biggest selling book/movie right now. everywhere you go you see twilight hear twilight speak twilight. they dominate the awards shows magizine covers and book shelves. the critics dont understand what this saga is about. they havnt read the books. you have to read the books to fully understand the movies.(even tho my boyfriend has not read the books but still likes the movies) this saga is more aimed at young teens/adults that are female. this is the perfect guy figure that every woman dreams of. and what any relationships deal with ( to an extent) and so what if taylor isnt “american” who is anymore? they aimed for a native american looking male cuz guess what thats what jacob is. a native american. get off your high “its not american” bullshit. and 2012 just came out, and from what i hear so far is actually very good.
whatever the critics said, it doesn’t matter. yeah it’s true. they can’t stop teenagers to spend their money in watching this movie. they have to read the books so they can understand. and, mind all of you… most of those critics are old people so they can not ride along the story. hey guys, say what you want to say, and let us enjoy and wait for the next twilight saga movie “eclipse”. let them cry out for criticizing, it’s our money not theirs. lolz..!!!!
Just to set the record straight, I’m a 45 yr old mom and my daughter and I read the Twilight series books at the same time. Actually I read Twilight first and told her about it, then we started reading the rest of them. I absolutely loved the ALL the books just as much as she did. New Moon was probably my least favorite of all because it was so slow to start but once into it the action was great. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I am looking forward to it and I’m ready for Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.
FYI: I’m also a Director of Nursing so I am educated! LOL and I still love Edward and Bella
I loved Twilight BUT I was very disappointed in New Moon. Jacob Black was the only thing worth watching in the entire movie.
Edward should’ve shaved down for his shirtless scene. Sparse hair on a skinny guy isn’t that appealing.
And what was up with the Cullen family wigs. They were horrible!l
I thought the film was very weak and lacked the emotion that the book has!
When i read the book, i cried for Bella and felt her pain when Edward left her.The despair she felt was not conveyed in the film at all. The blossoming feeling for Jacob were not portrayed very well either and as for the ending???!!!!
I sat there for a few moments thinking, “is that it?!”.
I’m a huge fan of the Twilight Books and was sooooooooo excited to see the film. I’d bought my tickets 1 month before the release date and had not shut up about it for months!
I came away very disappointed and thought Catherine Hardwicke did a much better job of directing Twilight.
I hope Eclipse has more emotion and spark than New Moon ended up having…..or not.
