Dancing With the Stars

Dancing With the Stars

Obviously, being a soap star/TV host/amazing father of two isn’t enough to keep Cameron Mathison busy. The All My Children hottie and host of Soapnet's I Wanna Be a Soap Star is tying on a pair of dancing shoes and vying for the golden disco ball trophy on Dancing With the Stars, premiering tonight at 8 p.m. on ABC. This season, the show will present the men’s and women’s first dances on separate nights (Cameron struts his stuff tomorrow). Dancing’s first couple castoff won’t be revealed until Wednesday, but the 38-year-old actor already knows who he needs to keep his eye on as his main competition.

Would you say you’re a good dancer?

I’m a decent athlete, but I’m by no means a trained dancer. [My partner] Edyta Sliwinska has been so patient and helpful. She says I need to bring more character to the moves. For the Foxtrot, she wants me to be suave like James Bond. For the mambo she wants me to be Rico Sauvé. Honestly, it helps my dance when there’s a character behind it.

Who do you think is your biggest threat?

I’m sure Mel B. can really dance, being a Spice Girl. I think Floyd Mayweather and Karina Smirnoff are going to be an awesome team, him being a lightweight boxer and able to move his feet so well. Jennie Garth is so funny and talented, I can only imagine she’s also a good dancer. There’s a lot of competition. It’s got me a little bit anxious.

Is your wife, Vanessa, worried about the sexier dances?

When you realize what I do on the soap, going to work and at least once a month, rolling around with a woman in attractive lingerie and making out, doing a sexy dance doesn’t even compare. My wife's going to be traveling with me a lot. She’s my support team.

They say good dancers make better lovers. Do you agree?

I can only imagine. I probably have some work to do, though I hope my wife doesn’t agree with me. I hope she thinks I’m already there!

How do you feel about the flashy costumes?

I’m not big on sequins and spandex. Not sort of my thing — or rhinestones. I don’t mind things that are fitted, I know that dancers like to show their shape. But the skintight, spandex pants are a bit much.
