According to Entertainment Weekly, the long-awaited premiere of season five had more viewers than season four, which previously held the record.

After 17 months off the air, Mad Men earned 3.5 million viewers last night, which is a 21 percent increase from the 2010 premiere of season four.

Perhaps the long break gave new and old fans a chance to catch up on the series.

Now the question will be if the show can keep up the strong ratings. Jon Hamm already teased to The Huffington Post that episode four is one fans should look forward to watching.

"Wait until you see Episode 4," he said. "And by the way, the fourth episode of the season always seems like, for whatever reason, a big episode for us. It’s always around that time when something — some bump in the road — happens and this season, that was one of them. I was like, 'Holy s***, this is weird.'"
