#13: Courtney Love

Pre-Meltdown: While always an edgy character, the widow of Kurt Cobain was winning respect for her own music and solid reviews for her acting (as a drug-addicted stripper, granted) in The People Vs. Larry King.

Low Points: October 2003 saw the former Hole singer arrested for smashing up her then-boyfriend's home, taken to the hospital for a reported overdose of Oxycontin, and have her daughter temporarily taken from her custody... all in one week.

Why it was fascinating: There were many Nirvana fans who had maintained that Courtney's success was due only to the fame of her late husband, and her ridiculous behavior (and subsequent inability to maintain a recording career) only gave credence to their beliefs. Also, it was a hoot to watch her brazenly barge in on Madonna's post-VMA interview on live TV.

Current Status: While Courtney maintains that she now lives a cleaner, healthier life, she was in court-ordered rehab as recently as 2006. She also hasn't released an album since 2004's America's Sweetheart.
