Pre-Meltdown: The increasingly odd actor/director who had transitioned from starring in big-budget action flicks to financing highly personal projects like The Passion of the Christ.

Low Point: Though Mel had been battling his alcohol demons for years, the Oscar-winner couldn't have gotten much lower than he did on July 28, 2006, when he was arrested and charged with a DUI. Making matters worse, during the arrest Mel launched into an anti-semitic rant that was all made public in the police record. Oy!

Entertainment Factor: There had been a general sense that Mel, rumored to be part of a bizarre Catholic cult, had gone off the deep end, and this only confirmed that the man who hasn't made a film in a non-dead language since the 1990s, was probably in need of a talking-to.

Current Status: Though many in Hollywood grumbled after the arrest that they'd never work with Mel again, money apparently speaks louder than principle, and the hundreds of millions made by Passion have continued to allow the director to work.
