Walk Hard (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) Starring: John C. Reilly, Jenna Fischer What could have been a hilarious rock-star biopic parody falls flat. Oscar nominee Reilly is Dewey Cox, the greatest rock star of all time. Though jokes are few and far between, it’s worth a rental. The two-disc unrated version features over two hours of bonus material.
Lions for Lambs (MGM Home Entertainment) Starring: Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise Robert Redford directs this attempt at a thought-provoking political drama. But big names like Cruise and Streep can’t infuse enough life into the effort.
The Golden Compass (New Line Home Video) Starring: Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig Kidman (perfect in the role of icy Mrs. Coulter) and Ian McKellen (along with newcomer Dakota Blue Richards) enhance this somewhat dark fantasy film, which won an Oscar for its visual effects.
There Will Be Blood (Paramount Home Entertainment) Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano Ruthless oilman Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis, in an unforgettable, Oscar-winning role) encounters trouble in his dealings with a young preacher (Dano). The untamed West provides a haunting background for this mesmerizing drama. A two-disc collector’s edition is also available.
The Water Horse (Columbia TriStar) Starring: Alex Etel, Emily Watson In this charming kids’ film, a boy (Etel) finds an egg that hatches into a very unique pet. The two-disc special edition includes behind-the-scenes featurettes and a background on the Loch Ness Monster.
Party of Five — The Complete Third Season (Sony) Starring: Matthew Fox, Neve Campbell The five Salinger siblings press on in another dramatic season. Bailey (Scott Wolf) fights alcoholism, Kirsten and Charlie’s (Fox) relationship sees ups and downs, and Claudia (Lacey Chabert) experiences high school angst. Five discs contain 25 episodes.
The Kite Runner (Dreamworks) Starring: Zekeria Ebrahimi, Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada Based on the best-selling novel, The Kite Runner is an emotional tale of two boys in ’70s Afghanistan, before communism or the Taliban. They’re from different social classes, but remain friends until life separates them. Child actors Mahmoodzada and Ebrahimi shine in their dramatic roles.
Southland Tales (Sony) Starring: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mandy Moore Richard Kelly’s follow-up to 2001’s superb Donnie Darko doesn’t live up to expectations. Election season 2008 finds bizarre, yet seemingly linked events taking place. Strangely cast and hard to figure out, Southland Tales disappoints.
The Mist (Genius Products) Starring: Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden Stephen King’s novella gets the TV-movietreatment and winds up an enjoyable horror flick. Locals and visitors of a small town in Maine fight a deadly and mysterious mist after a storm.
