Academy Widens Best Movie Field

June 24th, 2009

Best Picture nominees will no longer have a one in five shot in winning the Oscar, as the Academy Awards board announced today they’re doubling the number of nominees in that category, from five to 10, the Associated Press reports.

Academy President Sid Ganis said at a news conference that the board’s governors were responsible for deciding to expand, starting with next year’s Oscars on March 7.

"We nominated five, but there were many other great films last year," said Ganis of one reason for the expansion.

In the 1930s and ’40s it was common for 10 nominees to battle for the top prize: 1939’s 10 best-picture nominees were Gone With the Wind, which won, The Wizard of Oz, Stagecoach, Wuthering Heights, Love Affair, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Of Mice and Men, Dark Victory and Ninotchka, all of which are considered classics now.

Widening the field could also allow for more documentaries, foreign-language films, animated movies and even comedies to be nominated.

"Everybody says the academy will never nominate a comedy," Ganis said. "Well, maybe we will."

Oscars Shift Next Year for Olympics

March 25th, 2009

Believe it or not, it’s almost time for the Winter Olympics again – Vancouver will be hosting in 2010 – and no one wants to compete with the biggest sporting event of the year, including the Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences doesn’t want to conflict with the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics, so the 82nd Annual Academy Awards is shifting to March 7, later than usual (this year’s awards were on Feb. 22), Academy president Sid Ganis announced today.

The location will remain unchanged, as the ceremony is set for the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center.

Billy Crystal to Host 2010 Oscars?

February 24th, 2009

Hugh Jackman successfully hosted one of the highest rated televised Oscar shows in recent history on Sunday, catapulting him into the rotation of available hosts for future shows.

But according to FoxNews.com, an "oldie but goodie" may be looking to jump back into the lineup.

Billy Crystal is reportedly interested in returning as host of the Oscars, following last Sunday’s spectacular format and, consequently, sky-high ratings.

Crystal last hosted the Academy Awards in 2004 but it’s safe to say, when it comes to Oscar’s favorite hosts from recent years, Crystal takes the cake.

He first hosted in 1990, continuing on a four-year consecutive streak through 1993. After taking a 3-year break, Crystal returned for another round of back-to-back hosting in 1997 and 1998, and again in 2000.

The funnyman reportedly has an open schedule these days, having finished touring with his one-man show.

Guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

Hugh Jackman to Host Academy Awards

December 12th, 2008

The Oscars is getting a sexy new host—

Hugh Jackman, who was voted this year’s Sexiest Man Alive–will host the 81st Academy Awards, it was confirmed on Friday.

The 40-year-old Australia star is no stranger to hosting award shows. In 2004, Jackman hosted the 59th annual Tony Awards, for which he won an Emmy a year later.

His choice as this year’s Oscars host is part of the ceremony’s new look and feel. The show will have new producers as well as a new set director. Jackman’s selection is also a departure from the Academy’s standard of big-game comedians.

Past show hosts have included Billy Crystal, Ellen DeGeneres, Jon Stewart and Whoopi Goldberg.

Jackman was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in 2001’s Kate & Leopold. He currently stars in the big budget epic Australia, co-starring Nicole Kidman.

Cate Blanchett Has a Boy

April 14th, 2008

Cate Blanchett has a trio of boys!

The Oscar-winning actress and her husband, playwright Andrew Upton, 41, are the proud new parents of a baby boy who weighed about 8 lbs. Ignatius Martin was born on April 13 in Sydney and joins brothers Dashiell, 6, and Roman, who turns 4 on Apr. 23.

After months of rumors, Cate confirmed she was pregnant in November and revealed on the Academy Awards red carpet in February that she was carrying another son.

"He’s asleep — that bodes well," she said.

The 38-year-old, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2005 for The Aviator, was nominated for Best Actress in Elizabeth: The Golden Age and for Best Supporting Actress in I’m Not There.

Kidman Fights Drinking Rumors

February 27th, 2008

In response to rumors from New York Post columnist Cindy Adams that Nicole Kidman was "boozing backstage" during the Oscars, Kidman’s publicist, Catherine Olim of PMK, released this sharp tongued statement:

"I have to tell you that Nicole Kidman most certainly did NOT drink white wine or any other alcoholic beverage backstage. She had water and lemon zinger tea. That’s it. I know, I was there with her. I cannot remember the last time that Cindy Adams got anything right. She’s an idiot, and you can quote me."

Well, that settles that!

Javier Takes His Oscar for a Dance

February 25th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

A few hours after Javier Bardem was honored by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences with a Best Supporting Actor award, the Spanish star was celebrating his victory with girlfriend Penélope Cruz and his new best friend — Oscar.

The hunky actor, who won for his unforgettable role (and regretable haircut) in No Country for Old Men, took his new best buddy out for a little spin on the dance floor at the Miramax party at Bar Marmont. Ironically, the tune he picked to dance to was "You Can’t Always Get What You Want" by The Rolling Stones.

And while Javier was enjoying cutting a rug with his Oscar statuette, Penélope was busy introducing the actor’s mom to the other A-listers at the party.

It was a big night Javier and his No Country for Old Men cast and crew. Not only did he win, but so did the script (Best Adapted Screenplay), the directors (Joel and Ethan Coen) and the film itself for Best Picture.

The Spanish stud was also not alone as the only non-American winner on Sunday night. In fact, all four of the major acting awards were handed out to thespians from outside our borders, with French beauty Marion Cotillard winning for Best Actress, and Brits Daniel Day-Lewis and Tilda Swinton taking home the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress awards, respectively.
