Cover Story: Biggest Loser Secrets Revealed
April 8th, 2009
In only a few months on The Biggest Loser, contestants Tara Costa and Helen Phillips have managed to sweat and diet their way to newer, slimmer selves, dropping a combined total of almost 200 lbs. And exclusively in the new issue of OK!, these two inspiring women sit down to talk about how they did it — and how they plan to keep the weight off!
"I was a very sad person before," Helen confessed to OK!. "Coming here has actually saved my life."
Meanwhile, former plus-size model Tara admitted, "I was an overweight teen all the way up to 24… I did everything."
OK! caught up with both Tara and Helen when we visited the set of the hit NBC show’s upcoming fashion episode, where the remaining contestants work with style guru Tim Gunn to pick new looks to highlight their svelte figures. And here for the first time is your preview of their new looks:

Integral to Tara’s dramatic weight loss is her "6-Mile Workout," which consists of: Jogging 3 miles, doing 20 push-ups, jogging another mile, then another set of push-ups, another mile, more push-ups, one last mile and then one final round of push-ups. We’re losing weight just thinking about it!
"Right now I’m embracing day in and day out of what I’m living," explains Tara. "I’m finally allowing myself to realize that, okay, I can lose weight and I can be small and the weight will come off. And the second that you start believing that it will come off, it comes off."
Helen hopes that she can be an inspiration to those who think they’re too old to get healthy. I would like to be that help for someone else now to get people started," she tells OK!. "I want them to know that they can do it and it’s never too late. At one point I was thinking, ‘I’m 48, almost 50, this is my life now’ but don’t ever settle. Anything is possible and if I can do it, anyone can do it. You just have to keep trying, take little steps and work on it every single day."

Boys and Babies
January 14th, 2009I just got home from drinks with a boy, a boy who’s my age who explained to me he doesn’t like to date women, ehem, girls, older than 25 ‘well, because women mature faster than men so I think there should be an age gap.’ Thankfully he added (probably after seeing the question expression on my face), ‘Well, some guys.’ Exactly.
Anyway…that was the extent of my night tonight. After pulling the expected all-nighter after Golden Globes soirees Sunday I slept 12 hours last night and am now saving myself for Sundance. It’s shaping up to be a bit sub-par celeb-wise than previous years, but I’m hoping for the unexpected.
In other news, Biggest Loser host (and 16-year Days of Our Lives veteran) Alison Sweeney had her baby today. When I spoke to her last week she told me she was craving pickles and sugar-free hot chocolate, at the same time. Do those cravings just go away once you give birth? I wonder if someone has a diet of pickles and hot chocolate for the better part of nine months and grows accustomed to the combination as normal finds it as odd as the rest of us post-birth? Just wondering.
Ok, off to watch the episode of Gossip Girl I slept through last night. Ciao ![]()

Megan weighed in at 6 lbs 7 oz. and her rep tells OK!, "She and her mom are both doing great. Alison had a very easy labor, will go home tomorrow and will return to set in about a week, with baby Megan in tow."
OK! caught up with Alison for a chat last week , where she revealed how happy she was to give her 3-year-old son Ben a sister. So will this mother of two have any more kids?
"No, I think we’re happy with two, but obviously never say never."

Alison Sweeney’s Having a Girl
July 21st, 2008
Actress and Biggest Loser host Alison Sweeney is thinking pink!
When OK! caught up with the pregnant show host at a party for NBC on Sunday, Alison revealed for the first time that she and husband David Sanov are soon going to be the parents of a beautiful baby girl. The couple, who just celebrated their eigth wedding anniversary on July 8, already have a 3-year-old son, Benjamin.
“We found out that it’s a girl and we’re really excited about that,” said Alison, who is due on Jan. 20. When asked if she and her husband were discussing names, she laughed, “It’s a battle we’re waging. It’s going to be a long time before we figure that out.”
As for the not-so-pleasant effects of being pregnant, Alison admitted, “I have moments of pretty extreme morning sickness, which has not been my friend, but I get through it and I’m happy to hopefully be past it.”
And what about any changes to her diet? “I haven’t had cravings yet so much as aversions. Three-and-a-half months so far, all I want is like a bowl of cereal!”
The star, who also still plays the part of Sami Brady on Days of Our Lives, said she’s told her son she’s pregnant and “I’ve shown him pictures of the ultrasound of the baby.”
Alison, who famously has worked through weight issues herself, said she’s still exercising safely during her pregnancy, including taking a spin class with Biggest Loser trainer Bob Harper.
Bob and the other Biggest Loser trainer, Jillian Michaels, “have had lots to say about my workouts. They’ve taught me well. They were very cautious and concerned for me — they were very cute. The biggest issues are you have to make sure your heart rate doesn’t spike a lot and your body temperature doesn’t heat up.”
The hostess also is currently shooting the next season of Biggest Loser, which premieres in September. Appropriately for Alison, the theme is families!

OK! Interview: Alison Sweeney & Bob Harper
February 14th, 2008
Dying to get your body beach ready for the summer? Have no fear — The Biggest Loser’s trainer Bob Harper will show you how! The 42-year-old already shares his pearls of wisdom with Loser host Alison Sweeney, whom he whips into shape outside of the show. Alison, 31, signed up for Bob’s spin class at L.A.’s Crunch and OK! was there for the workout!
Alison, why did you decide to take Bob’s spin class?
Alison: It was actually [Loser trainer] Jillian Michaels who suggested, "You should take Bob’s spin class. It’s amazing." I said, "I’ve never taken spin before. I bet it’s hard," and she’s like, "Just take it!"
Bob: Now she’ll text me during the week— "Are you teaching this Saturday?" I’m like, "Yup, I’m doing it. Let’s go!" Saturday mornings, 10:30, she’s right there ready to go.
Can you describe your class?
Bob: I’ve been doing it for years. It gets really hot, you’re pouring sweat, the music is really loud. It is a crazy experience. We’re out of that saddle almost the whole time. It’s me with my little headset talking nonstop and making sure if I ever see anyone trying to slack off, I will just push them even harder. It’s about trying to burn calories as fast as you can. There are definitely several pounds on the floor by the end of class.
Are you pedaling the whole time?
Bob: Oh, yeah and we never really sit down. We’re out of that saddle most all the time. We’re doing crazy hills; we’re doing flat runs; we’re singing along sometimes to a jog. I play a lot of hip hop and R & B so it’s kind of like that style.
You did some stretches beforehand. Do you normally do that?
Bob: We normally—I prefer to do stretching after the class but we didn’t want to mess up her makeup [today]. Normally, it’s good to stretch afterwards ‘cause you’re so warmed up. Your body is just like, supple and ready to elongate at that point.
Describe some of these stretches and why they’re valuable.
Bob: So many people think when it comes to stretching it’s all about forward flexing, bending over where the spine should be able to move in the other direction also. So getting into those backbend type stretches, there’s a lot of energy stored up into the spine so you could release a lot of energy there and become more flexible in the opposite direction. There’s a phrase I’ve always said when it comes to yoga and stretching and it’s you’re only as old as your spine is flexible and so the more you keep your body agile and flexible, it’s absolutely the fountain of youth.
Alison, how does Bob motivate you?
Alison: When Bob tells you you can do something, you don’t just do it because he’s telling you to; you do it because he believes that you can actually do it. He’ll come over to your bike, he’ll look you in the eye and he’ll be like, "Yes, you can."
How exhausted or energized do you feel after his class?
Alison: I think it’ s both [laughs]. Right when we’re done with the spin class, we’re stretching, I literally feel exhausted like—and that’s part of what he helps you learn to do—to give him everything you’ve got so when you’re done, you feel like you really accomplished something. You’re not walking out of that class thinking, "Oh, I could do more. I could have given more." No! He gets you to give everything you have so that when you’re done, you’re like, "I’ve got nothing left to give," and you’re exhausted. And then afterwards, you’ve had water and relaxed, you feel so revitalized and energized. You feel so good.
Bob, what does spin class do for people?
Bob: The spin class keeps you toned and, cardiovascularly, it’s one of the best things because the main muscle that I’m concerned about when I work with people is the heart. I want their heart to be strong — spinning is definitely a contributing factor.
Without giving too much away, what else can we expect from The Biggest Loser this season?
Alison: Normally when you come into the game on any reality show, you don’t know other people, and alliances and friendships are formed, when you go through this experience together, but these people came in with someone that of course is the tightest alliance you can ask for. They’re never going vote against each other—they’re best friends or parent/child. It’s going to be interesting to see how these people get eliminated and what happens next when people end up having to get separated.
