Allison Iraheta Lands Record Deal

June 10th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Record labels are racing to sign up finalists from the recently completed eighth season of American Idol. Not surprisingly, the first two artists to land contracts were the top two finishers, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert. And now comes news that fourth-place finisher, teenager Allison Iraheta, has inked a deal.

According to EW.com, this season’s highest-placing female contestant has been signed by 19 Recordings and Jive Records, who plan to have her debut CD available for sale in the fall.

When OK! spoke to Allison after her elimination, she talked about her plans to maintain grounded and not let the sudden fame go to her head. "I guess it’s all up to me," she admitted. "When people get out there and you get noticed, people know who you are. Some people start changing and think, oh I’m a better person. I feel I’m definitely going to do well with that because I’m going to stay true to myself.

While this is good news for Allison, it doesn’t bode well for third-place finisher Danny Gokey, who has yet to announce a deal.

Surely all the finalists will be discussing details of their deals when they hit the road this summer for the annual American Idol tour.

Idol Hangover: The Morning After

May 21st, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Wednesday night’s American Idol finale was nothing if not fodder for water cooler discussions around the country this morning. From Kris Allen’s surprise victory over presumed front-runner Adam Lambert to Kara DioGuardi’s bikini-bod showdown with Katrina Darrell, there certainly was plenty to keep both die-hard fans and curious newcomers talking for days.

And people certainly were talking over at OK!’s Twitter page.

Here are some choice Tweeted tidbits:

ON THEIR FAVORITE MOMENT OF THE NIGHT:

Crysssss: I couldn’t pick a favorite part if you paid me.. The whole show was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!

DolceVitaRita: Kara getting on stage to show up the bikini bimbo!

deannsprankle: my fave part of finale when [Black Eyed Peas] took the stage! it was great! and allison’s duet. worst: when the result announced!

marissaberman: definitely the bikini girl part and when that other girl ran up on stage and stole the mic from ryan

SPEAKING OF THE BIKINI BATTLE, SEEMS LIKE OK! READERS PREFERRED KARA OVER KATRINA!

dianasorace: [Kara is a] wicked singer, wicked body. But still think she should be dropped from the show. wicked annoying.

stephvaz: omg that was one of the highlights of last night. totally made all of those criticisms about her as the 4th judge go away

mysugarisraw: Kara DioGuardi !! Katrina is fake, needs to get over herself. p.s - she cant sing either.

WHERE DO YOU SEE KRIS LAMBERT’S CAREER IN A FEW YEARS?
shawnalynch: I like both of them; however, Adam will have the "career"

JennCleveland: I think peeps didn’t vote 4 [Adam] cuz of his personal choices & not his talent. It’s bull! AL will sell millions of records anwy.

dianasorace: Adam Lambert will be VERY successful, he doesn’t need the show or "crown" to succeed.

nicki_: nowhere. american idols a good show but they ever REALLY turn into idols. people just wanna see the next one its a failed system.

deanaontheradio: Opening for runner-up!

OK! Interview: Allison Iraheta

May 11th, 2009

What advice did your mom give you before you started?

She just told me to do your best. She was just proud of me for trying out and do your best and stay true to yourself.

Tell us a little about your hair.

It was weird. Red is my favorite color. It was two years ago when they decided to do a makeover thing to me. I had long, brown highlighted hair. They just cut it short and dyed it red. Then my mom started getting used to it and slowly I started adding other colors.

Is there a brand you love to make it red?

I use L’Oreal. That’s the one I use to dye it myself.

Describe your style.

I’m really bad at that. I’m the kind of person who’s like, oh I like that. I’m gonna buy that. I do like the funky colors. There’s this one store I really like. It’s called Forgotten Saints for performances. I really do like that one. I do go to random stores. I pull things out of anywhere and put them together. I’m not good at styles and all that.

Is there a celeb that inspires your style?

I don’t think so. I’m pretty bad at that. I think, "Oh that looks good on them, maybe it will look good on me," and then I put it on and I’m like, "Oh no, that’s not right." So I stopped trying with that. I just go for what looks good on me.

You were with all those boys in the house, how was that?

All of them were older brothers. The one who was really protective over me was Matt [Giraud]. He was like, what are you doing, why is he talking to you? I’m like, “He’s my friend!”

I can go to Kris [Allen] and tell him anything, just can talk to him. For advice, that would be Adam. And Danny [Gokey] was the one I’d goof around with. Anoop [Desai] was the smart, intellectual one that I’d be like, can you help me with this, and Scott [MacIntyre] was one of the funniest there too.

Did you get fashion or makeup advice from Adam Lambert?

Definitely. He knows a lot about the fashion you can tell he’s good at the styles. And I definitely asked him before every performance, I’d ask for his advice, how does this look on me and he’d say, not so much. Or he’d be yeah, OK. So it was pretty cool. We’re like family, we could ask for advice.

Are you going to duet on tour with Adam?

Yes, we hope so. If we can, that will be fun.

What songs will you sing on tour?

I’m thinking about "Crybaby," the one I got eliminated with. I haven’t thought about the others yet.

What drew you to that song?

I knew it before they even gave me the list. And if I know it, then a lot of people should know it, but I guess not. I really like the song, and it’s a song that I’ve liked since forever. And since they said it was classic rock week, I thought, I got this, I got to do this. They had it on the list and I checked it off and I felt good about it.

You have celeb fans Miley Cyrus and David Archuleta.

That’s crazy man.

Do you have any others?

Can I brag about this? He just recognized me [in the airport], Zach Braff from Scrubs. And he came up to me and said, "Hey, nice to meet you." And I was like, “Uhhh, I’m star struck right now.” He’s like, “So am I.” It was really awesome meeting him and knowing that he knew who I was. It’s pretty cool, I’m a big fan of his.

How do you plan stay grounded as a teen star?

I guess it’s all up to me. When people get out there and you get noticed, people know who you are. Some people start changing and think, oh I’m a better person. I feel I’m definitely going to do well with that because I’m going to stay true to myself.

When you get home, will you have your own hometown parade?

I have a lot of people who do want to have some stuff done when I get home like surprise parties that I’ve heard of that I shouldn’t have.

Will you have school on tour?

Yeah. I’ve got to finish school and I really want to and I have no other choice.

Are you trying to fit college in there?

I definitely want to fit college in there for backup. I’m not going to give up on the singing. I’ve gone this far, why stop now. I really want to keep going.

Idol Insider: It’s Down to Three

May 7th, 2009

As American Idol rolls on toward the season finale, OK! asked one of the few people on the planet who know what it’s like to ride the AI rollercoaster for an entire season — Diana DeGarmo — to share her unique perspective on Idol every week.

May 6 — Elimination Night
Wow. What a night. I don’t think that I can fully express how shocked I am by last night’s American Idol episode. But hey, what else would you expect from a show on its eighth season?!?

The performance from No Doubt was really fun and super exciting. I personally would’ve expected someone a little more hard rock, not punk, to perform, but I still loooooove No Doubt, so I was a happy camper! I guess maybe since Gwen has her Idol connection it was an easy way for them to promote their super awesome new tour that they are about to kick off. It’s nice to see Idol spreading its pop wings a little!

Paula’s performance of her new single was totally spicy, just how Ms. Abdul would want it! It was so cool too see her sharing the stage with Benji from So You Think You Can Dance. Paula’s still got the moves and her dancers were lovin‘ her! The whole performance was over the top, but in a good way. I tend to like that kind of thing.

The show always takes its results down to the last second, but as soon as Kris Allen made it to the "safe zone" I knew that Allison Iraheta would be the one to go. Hey, what can I say, but we females are the main viewers of American Idol and we tend to vote for males over females.

I think that the top 4 for this season has been really great, but I think that Allison deserved to make it at least one more week. Since being on the show, I have kind of figured out how the show tends to "work" and honestly, I thought it would have come down between Allison and Adam Lambert in the finale. I have been wrong before so — believe it or not — this was not the first time!

Idol Insider: The Final Four Perform

May 6th, 2009

As American Idol rolls on toward the season finale, OK! asked one of the few people on the planet who know what it’s like to ride the AI rollercoaster for an entire season — Diana DeGarmo — to share her unique perspective on Idol every week.

May 5 — Rock Night!
Last night was my first time actually going to an American Idol show in almost two years. I felt like I had walked into the Twilight Zone!

When I arrived I saw all of the different audience members going in for both American Idol and Dancing With The Stars with their signs and happy faces and then there were the paramedics…. duhn-duhn-duuuuuuhnnn…….

Once we were inside, we found out that American Idol’s dearly beloved stage manager, Debbie, had a nasty accident on the stage and had to be rushed to the hospital. Then, not even five minutes later, someone came out to tell us that part of the stage had fallen down during the dress rehearsal. A live show is stressful enough, but two big accidents right before a show definitely puts everyone on edge!

Once the stage was cleaned up and the audience was moved in, we all got a special treat and got to see the rest of the dress rehearsal. The dress rehearsal is usually taped and then shown as the "re-cap package" at the end of the show; so the production team was frantic to get each of the contestants up there as quickly as possible before they went live to the East Coast.

That also gave the audience a little snippet of what was to come with the show and let me say, I got excited! The energy of stepping into that building alone was plenty for me, but to add to it, there was drama and the man, the legend, the rock god, Slash, sitting in front of me!

I have to admit, I was pretty darn starstruck.

The rock-themed show kicked off with a huge bang with Adam Lambert singing the genre of his dreams. Adam’s confidence was very obvious from the moment he stepped out on that stage. He knew he was in his element and that he was going to give us something great. Adam picked a cool, but bold, song — Led Zepplin’s "Whole Lot of Love" — and hit it out of the park. The judges gave him plenty of praise and the audience totally agreed.

Allison Iraheta came up next singing "Cry Baby" by Janis Joplin. I thought she gave an awesome performance and picked a perfect song for her voice. The judges didn’t exactly see it that way. Simon ragged on her a little too much for my taste, but Allison stood up for herself and made me proud, once again. I know just how she feels, so I give her big kudos for speaking her mind!

For the first time in Idol history, the contestants had to sing duets and, honestly, I don’t think it was Idol’s brightest idea.

Danny Gokey and Kris Allen sang Styx’s "Renegade" — a kick-butt song — and sounded fabulous together, but how in the world were the judges supposed to judge THAT?? Songs for the show can barely be a minute and a half and then when you have to divide that again with another contestant — huh, what, why??

The arrangement done for Kris and Danny didn’t give enough "personal shine time" for either of them. That was just plain unfair. The judges gave the guys a hard time, but I was jamming out with them the whole song!

Moving on…..

Finally, we got to see Kris take the stage alone with "Come Together." Kris had big shoes to fill with singing a Beatles tune and I enjoyed his performance a lot, but the judges weren’t feeling it. I thought Kris looked really comfortable up there with his guitar and sang the song really well. He even got to play Slash’s guitar in his mentoring session! How incredible is that?!? The judges gave Kris a hard time about his song choice, but the audience and I loved it. Thankfully, the judges don’t vote!

PICS FROM ROCK NIGHT:

Last up for the solo performances was Danny, who took the biggest risk of the night with Aerosmith’s "Dream On." And, in my opinion, he sang the song like a rock star! Even though Danny is known more for his smooth R&B vocals, he really stepped out of his comfort zone and put on a great performance. Once again, the judges drank a huge gallon of "hater-ade" and proceeded to put poor Danny through the wringer. I strongly believe that after Adam the judges just went into auto-pilot. They kept picking on the obvious — that rock is not really Danny’s forté — and never really gave him any worthy critiques.

Wrapping up the evening, Adam and Allison sang their duet — Foghat’s "Slow Ride." Even though I still don’t believe that duets are a good idea for the show, Adam and Allison each really sparkled. The judges put their "party pants" back on and gave each of them nice comments. Simon was even bold enough to tell Allison that Adam probably helped her get into the finals with their performance. Oh Simon, what am I gonna do with you??

In the end, Rock Night was pure fun and each of the contestants gave fantastic performances. It was a trip sitting out in the audience. I am still amazed by how much the show has grown since I was on it "back in the day." I had a wonderful American Idol reunion with all of the production family and even Simon waved to me from his chair! Awwwwwww!

Idol’s a Family Affair

May 4th, 2009

It’s been a long time now since the American Idol contestants left their normal lives behind and were whisked up into the whirlwind that is the show.

So how are they maintaining a little of the comfort of home while they’re away from home?

As a minor, Allison Iraheta has her mom, Sara, for a roommate. “I have moral support,” the 17-year-old from L.A. says.

As the competition grows more intense, Adam Lambert, 27, admits, “I find myself indirectly taking a big brother role sometimes.”

Still, with three remaining male contestants, including Kris Allen, 23, all living in a mansion, “it hasn’t gotten crazy,” says Danny Gokey, 29.

The competitors are getting comfy in their home away from home: “It’s really hard to not just zone out and kind of veg out,” Adam says.

American Idol Insider: And Then There Were Four

April 30th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

As American Idol rolls on toward the season finale, OK! reached out to one of the few people on the planet who know what it’s like to ride the AI rollercoaster for an entire season — Diana DeGarmowho will share her unique perspective on Idol every week.

April 29
It was a tough decision, but unfortunately the show must go on. It always gets so hard to see someone go once you get down to the last few people. American Idol’s results show last night was chock full of great performances by Jamie Foxx, Natalie Cole, and Taylor Hicks. But of course, the part everyone was tuning in for didn’t happen until the VERY last second. The producers have really gotten the whole "suspense" thing down to a T.

Surprisingly enough, this week’s bottom two were Matt Giraud and Adam Lambert. Tuesday’s performance show was so great for all of the contestants, but I don’t think anyone was expecting it to be either of them. Even the wonderful Kris Allen was in the bottom three.

Obviously, with so few contestants left, being in the bottom isn’t as bad, but it can still give you a good blow to your ego. I spent a few weeks in the bottom three myself so I can speak from experience!

Each week the results show gets harder and harder to watch, let alone participate in! When you’re sitting on that stage watching your future hang in the balance the emotions can be overwhelming. Not only are you nervous for yourself, but you’re also nervous for your friends sitting beside you. For months, you spend almost every waking moment with these people and you all become almost like family. And yet, you are still competitors. It’s kind of a funky situation if you ask me! As a person, you’re rooting for your friends to succeed, but as a contestant you’re also rooting for yourself.

In my opinion, the absolute worst part about being voted off the show is that you have to sing the stupid song that got you voted off— AGAIN!! How awful is that?!? I mean, seriously, that is some deranged stuff!

Luckily, for Matt he sang a fabulous song last night and he got to leave the show on a pretty big high note. Unlike some contestants who’ve had to leave the show with some of the most awful songs ever. Not every finalist can fit into all the different themes they throw at you week after week, so to see someone go through a bad song again is cruel and unusual punishment for everyone.

PICS FROM THIS WEEK’S SHOWS:

I’ll admit I had a few tough weeks during my Idol ride. Sometimes I honestly thought, "If I ever have to sing this song again I am going to die." I was fortunate enough to squeeze by on some of my worst weeks, an experience that then led me to take every week as possibly my last. I didn’t want to ever be known as "the girl who left the show singing that awful song."

Once I started taking the competition in that sense, I got a big upward swing and found myself in the final two. American Idol is a very long, strenuous, vocal marathon, and each week is like another treacherous mile that you have to make it through.

As for the latest finalist to fall, Matt’s had a huge launching pad for his career and I can’t wait to see what else he makes of it!

Until next week!
