Paulina Porizkova Fired from ANTM

May 13th, 2009

Apparently Tyra Banks‘ people felt Paulina Porizkova doesn’t have what it takes to become America’s Next Top Judge: the model has announced she was axed from America’s Next Top Model over the phone on her birthday.

"Listen, do you know why I am in Los Angeles… because I am looking for a job," she told The Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson on Tuesday night’s show. "Because I was fired by America’s Next Top Model on my birthday, they timed it well."

Ouch.

Paulina added that it didn’t matter who did the actual firing, but alluded to the fact that ANTM might have some budgetary problems.

"But the reason I was fired, just to be fair here, the reason I was told I was fired was because, it seemed that America’s Next Top Model had gotten too fat and they needed to cut some fat and the fat was me," she told Ferguson.

She’s not really mad, however, as she seems to be accepting her unemployment with grace, admitting, "I really believe that just felt they didn’t need me, which of course they don’t, so that’s okay."

Jaslene Gonzalez: “Why Not Cause a Riot?”

March 20th, 2009

After last weekend’s riot during an NYC casting call for America’s Next Top Model left six people injured, former winner Jaslene Gonzalez offered her condolences to those involved… after she figured out what had happened in the first place.

When OK! asked Jaslene about her thoughts on the riot at the Valentino Last Emperor premiere and after party hosted by Quintessentially and Gilt Groupe, she seemed confused, responding, "As far as?" We then informed her there had been a riot, to which she replied, "There’s always a riot."

So did that freak her out?

"No! I feel like it’s just part of the excitement of the show," she replied, clearly still not up to speed. "You never know what to expect. It’s all types of characters and personalities. Why not cause a riot? It makes great TV."

Umm…

Jaslene finally asked what happened, and said, "I have not been up to date. Oh! I didn’t hear! I was not aware, I’ve been like, M.I.A."

When we filled her in, however, she offered her condolences.

"It’s very unfortunate. I feel bad," she told OK!. "I wish everyone the best, and for everything to happen naturally and well for the girls. But for something like that to happen, it’s unfortunate. You wish safety and protection and the best."

As for the new requirement of a model under 5′7" to win the next cycle, Jaslene is nothing but supportive.

"I know many young girls who are short and are always asking me, ‘What should I do? Where should I go?’ For her to give a girl an opportunity to be America’s Next Top Model that’s under 5’7”, I think it’s something new. It’s definitely something Tyra [Banks] can do."

Nigel Barker Gives Budget Beauty Tips

January 9th, 2009

Nigel Barker charms during his Haiti: Hunger and Hope art exhibition held Thursday at NYC’s Milk Gallery.

While tunes such as SWV’s Right Here and Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours blare, the America’s Next Top Model judge and fashion photographer gamely entertains guests with kisses on the cheek and sparkling conversation.

Any budget beauty or fashion tips?

“I always say ‘keep it natural, keep it simple,’” he tells me. “People tend to overdo it. People ask ‘what can I do on the red carpet? I want to have a more relaxed look.’ Just be confident in yourself. Don’t think because of the makeup, because of the hair, because of the gown, you’re going to look fantastic. There’s enough fashion faux pas out there. You have to feel fantastic and the camera will pick it up.”

Nigel perks up when asked about his favorite body part.

“I’m more of a butt guy than I am a boob guy,” he laughs. “And legs as well. Legs and butt are very important — and feet. I’ve got a bit of a foot fetish. I’m all about the lower part of the body.”

Nice.

Despite pleas from the government to cancel his trip, Nigel traveled to Haiti to document the situation so that he could raise awareness about their desperate plight. (It’s just 45 minutes from the U.S.) His striking photographs adorn the walls tonight.

Giving back is key to the British-born father of two, 36, who is married to Cristen Chin.

“I think it’s fantastic that stars like Angelina Jolie get involved with charity,” he tells me. “The more people the better. We need to help out more in general, and on Top Model we always go on about our girls becoming role models. It’s not a joke. It’s important. If you’re in a position where people listen to you or you’re in the public eye, that celebrity should be used for something. It shouldn’t just be used to make your life better. I guess it’s an Asian thing, but the pleasure is in the giving in my family.”

He continues, “When you have children, it’s not when the kid gives you something, it’s when you give your son something and you see that smile on their face. We can all identify with that. Charity’s the same way. When you help people and they are physically moved by what you’ve done or you’ve changed their life, there’s nothing in the world that makes you feel better.”

I ask designer Zang Toi whether he’s spoken to Farrah Fawcett recently. (She was diagnosed with cancer of the intestine in 2006.) The Charlie’s Angels star has been his muse, and I once had time with her backstage after one of his shows.

“I haven’t talked to her for several months,” Zang tells me. “I try to leave a message every two weeks. I just left a message at Christmas, but the last time I called about six weeks ago, I spoke to the housekeeper and she said she’s fine, so I hope she’s OK.”

Any fashion advice?

“Create your own style, and don’t follow trends blindly. You have to understand yourself, and have your own individual look.”

He gives props to “glamorous” Sharon Stone, “original” Drew Barrymore and “youthful” Cameron Diaz for having the best style.

Um, Sharon?

“Anything I mention to my clients – if Sharon has it, they all want it.”

OK! Interview: Nigel Barker

June 16th, 2008

Having lived out a career in front of and behind the lens, America’s Next Top Model judge Nigel Barker knows a thing or two about mugging for the camera. And when is comes to a winning smile, the model-turned-photographer says that while his ANTM co-star Tyra Banks always looks great, right now it’s newlywed and mom-to-be Ashlee Simpson that has him going wow!

OK! caught up with Nigel at the Crest Whitestrips, My Life In Smiles event in NYC recently, where he was also excited to announce he was having another baby.

Congrats on having another baby!

It’s very exciting. It puts a big smile on my face! One boy is crazy but two is going to be even more ridiculous! My wife is going to have three men around and I’m not sure if she’s prepared for that!

Who has the best smile in Hollywood?
The most real or the best!? I think someone with the best right now and someone who is happy with herself right now is Ashlee Simpson. She just got married and I saw her and she was smiling from side to side.

Who’s been your favorite person to photograph?
Well Tyra Banks is always a good one. I photographed Tyra and she has an incredible smile. She’s always been a favorite of mine. I photograph different people all the time. I like to shoot all kinds of people.

I also just got back from Haiti and I was photographing the food shortages and the people out there. But they’re still smiling and happy because they’re happy about life. They’re still in love with people and they’re still in love with their kids. You can’t take that away from anybody.

Did you always want to be a photographer?

I got a camera when I was nine years old and it wasn’t until I was a model that I realized you could be a photographer for a job. Up until then I just thought it wasn’t a career; it was a hobby. I got lucky.

How’s ANTM going?
Is going very well. I’m right in the middle. I’m going to our secret location tomorrow.

Oh yeah, where is it: Europe, Asia?
Somewhere in there! There’s a couple of crazy people though. It’s a little scary! I don’t know how that happens! There’s a lot of crazy. It could be called feisty house!

Dina Lohan Gives Back

June 5th, 2008

Dina Lohan is the star of Flip Flop Casual’s Cocktail Party benefiting Project Cuddle, which keeps infants from being abandoned. Tweens and teens are giddy La Lohan is attending the soiree held at Village Club of Sands Point in Port Washington, N.Y., and swarm her when she arrives with brother Paul. But Dina can’t get enough of a  rescued infant who attends the festivities with his new mom. Aww!

As The O.C. Beach Band – which includes former members of The Beach Boys – play songs such as Help Me Rhonda, I Saw Her Standing There and Surfer Girl, partygoers bid in the silent auction. Highlights include a set visit to E.R. and lunch with John Stamos!

Foodwise, each room has a different theme. There’s a sushi bar in one suite, a pizza station in another, and salad, burgers, rigatoni and fettucine alfredo in yet another. It’s a mild evening, so many relax on the back porch and in the airy music space.

Oh, look, here’s America’s Next Top Model winner CariDee English. “Do I know you?” she says. Actually, we met at an OK! food shoot in Miami during Super Bowl 2007, I remember. She’s good pals with OK! blogger Jennifer Birn and OK!’s Alisandra Puliti. CariDee mentions lot of her friends are adopted so the Cuddle cause is close to her heart.

It’s a big day for her. She tells me she just got her own show on Fuse! Hip, hip, hooray. It’s a Singled Out-type deal. Is she dating anyone? “Lots,” she laughs.

What’s the key to juggling lots of guys at the same time? “Just be honest that you’re not looking for a relationship,” CariDee tells me. “And don’t let them find out about each other!”

Now Dina’s ready for her closeup. “Have we met before? You look familiar,” she says. Hm, no, but I saw her once at a Z100 event in 2005. “Be nice,” she cautions, as I interview her with two pals and a publicist at her side. Can I just tell you she totally won me over? She’s super-glam yet vulnerable, and even gives me a hug at the end of our chat. Honestly, she’s just trying to be a good mom and raise her four kids to live out their dreams. And she has a huge heart. In fact, when she was growing up, her family took in those in need through Catholic Charities. She’s a born giver. And, she’s totally genuine.

Hooray! The silent auction brings in $150,000 for this worthy cause.

Time to go. Car service is waiting outside for our ride back to NYC.

More than 600 babies have been rescued in the U.S. and Canada through Project Cuddle, which offers a safe and legal alternative to baby abandonment. Call 1-888-628-3353 for more information.
