Beware of Christian Bale

February 3rd, 2009

Christian Bale may be hot, but his simmering rage makes him scary. Six months after he was cleared of verbally assaulting his mother and sister, the 35-year-old actor was caught on tape threatening the director of photography on the set of Terminator: Salvation.

I didn’t need these tales to teach me to beware of his temper.

When I first meet Christian in June 2006 during the Rescue Dawn junket, I experience his wrath up close when I ask about his favorite meal his wife cooks for him.

This should have been benign: He married Sibi Blazic in 2000, and they have a daughter, Emmaline, 3, together.

He stares at me for a few beats before snarling, “I’ve got no idea. I’ve never been asked that. Just put down maggots. Live maggots.”

Luckily, there are about four others in the hotel room at NYC’s Regency Hotel when his demeanor turns surly, but I’m the one sitting beside him.

Deeper into the roundtable interview, I take another shot. “Why do you and your wife make a good couple?” I ask him.

“I don’t really want to be talking about that,” he replies.

All right, how about the less-personal secret to a happy marriage? I’m flexible…

“Ha ha ha,” he cracks. “Who am I, Dr. Ruth? I’m not really going to answer.”

Even as he goes crazy on me, I could still see the appeal in his sparkling eyes. I had no idea he would be so volatile!

“Do you like angry men?” a friend asks the next time he freaks out at The Dark Knight premiere in July 2008. Um, no, I don’t think so.

This time I ask him what his wife and child think of him playing Batman.

“They laugh at it,” Christian tells me calmly, with that knowing glint in his eyes. I can tell he knows I look familiar, but he doesn’t know why.

“They get a great kick out of it, but ultimately I’m just husband and dad to them. They find it funny.”

Moments later, another reporter I know catches him at the end of the line and asks if Heath Ledger will get an Oscar nod for his role. (He did!)

“Anybody’s an a******, who would try to predict that,” he responds.

When a TV crew lobs a softball question his way, he says, “I don’t give a f***.” (Usually celebs are on their best behavior for the cameras, so this is rather shocking.)

And when asked about how he gains and loses weight for his roles, he also lashes out.

After all these embarrassing public displays, hopefully Christian will find a better way to manage his anger.

No Riddler for Eddie Murphy

December 18th, 2008

While all of Hollywood seemed to be buzzing that Eddie Murphy was a shoo-in to play the Riddler in the next Batman movie, his agent is now denying earlier reports that had him all but officially part of the cast, telling Access Hollywood that news is "not true."

Other names being bandied about for the popular movie have included Johnny Depp as the Riddler, Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin and Angelina Jolie or Rachel Weisz as Catwoman.

So far, however, the president of Warner Bros., Alan Horn, says they’re focusing on the plot.

“The story is everything,” Horn tells Collider.com. “We’ve been talking to [director] Chris Nolan and what we have to do is get him in the right place and have him tell us what he thinks the notion might be for a great story, but Chris did a great job and we’d love to have him come back and do another one… we are going to be respectful of his timing and we want to get it right.”

Christian Bale & Mother Have “Difficult Relationship”

July 23rd, 2008

There may be a lot more to the story than meets the eye regarding Christian Bale’s assault allegations by his mother and sister.

The actor and his mom, Jenny, 61, have had a difficult relationship for years, and Jenny may have plotted the whole saga to score money, TMZ reports.

Christian and his mother became estranged back in the 1970s when the Dark Knight star opted to live with his now-deceased father David over his mother following their divorce. The two moved to Los Angeles, where the 34-year-old kick-started his acting career.

According to a source, Jenny grew "bitter" over her son’s success and has been angling to profit from his name for some time.

The Sunday night fight, which included physical contact, though no one was hurt, has resulted in multiple newspaper and magazine offers for Jenny to dish.

Christian was released yesterday after a four-hour police interrogation and is expected to return to the British police station in September pending further inquiry; however, sources tell TMZ police are favoring his side of the story.

Christian Bale Released, Denies Assault

July 22nd, 2008

Christian Bale has been released from police custody and is denying his mother and sister’s allegations that he assaulted them.

"Christian Bale attended a London police station today, on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister," Christian’s attorneys said in a statement.

"Mr. Bale who denies the allegation, co-operated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police.

"At this time, there will be no further comment by Mr. Bale."

The Dark Knight’s star’s mother, Jenny, 61, and Sharon, 40, claimed Christian lashed out at them in a hotel room Sunday night. According to sources, the altercation was the result of an argument over a long-running family disagreement, The Daily Telegraph reports.

The 34-year-old actor was taken into custody for questioning Tuesday morning, but has since been released after a four-hour interrogation. Christian is expected to return to the Belgravia police station in September, pending further inquiry.

Christian Bale Arrested for Assault

July 22nd, 2008

Christian Bale has been arrested for assault in London on Tuesday for an alleged altercation against his mother and sister, The Sun reports.

The Dark Knight star, in town for Monday’s U.K. premiere of the film, reportedly lashed out against mom Jenny, 61, and sister Sharon, 40, Sunday night at Park Lane’s Dorchester Hotel.

His mother and sister then filed a complaint with Hampshire police, who passed the case on to the Met Police.

Authorities waited until after Monday night’s screening of The Dark Knight was over, as they were still investigating the claims, to arrest Christian.

While the Met Police did not release the star’s name because he has not been formally charged, it did confirm an arrest of a suspect was made.

“A 34-year-old man attended a central London police station this morning by appointment. He was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault. He currently remains in custody," a spokesman for the Met Police said. “We can confirm we have received allegation from another force in relation to an alleged incident in central London."

The Dark Knight shattered U.S. box office records over the weekend, taking in a record $158 million.

Stars Descend On ‘Dark Knight’ Premiere

July 17th, 2008

Heath Ledger is the star of the Dark Knight premiere, even though he cannot be present at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square event.

Though his life was cut short in January, Heath’s memory lives on. Attendees including Ethan Hawke, dashing through in a brown-and-white baseball cap and beige suit; Josh Hartnett, who twirls through in a brown cap; and Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick, who is dressing his curly hair with a side part, pay tribute.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, who is in the movie, has no time for print, which is also what happened with Heath at his last premiere for I’m Not There – and at 2005’s Casanova. (I was fortunate enough to spend time with him at The Regency Hotel during the I’m Not There press day. He seemed like a great guy – totally dateable.)

It’s no wonder he was a hit with the ladies. In November 2005, he and then-girlfriend Michelle Williams stepped out for the Gotham Awards. According to my file, “They were giving each other goo-goo eyes as he cradled her during TV interviews.”

Sadly, we must move forward without his towering presence.

Christian Bale, who plays Batman, shares a story about Heath playing The Joker.

“He did a fantastic job,” Christian says. “He enjoyed playing the part immensely and I was glad I got to experience working with him and watching him develop into character. Personally I enjoy anybody who immerses themselves to such an incredible degree. I enjoy that too. I recognize how ridiculous it is, and I find it incredibly funny. To be honest, the more serious people get with any role, the more humor I find in it. I find that with Heath.”

According to co-star Aaron Eckhart, Heath was a doting dad to Matilda, 2.

“Everybody on this movie had kids. Maggie, Christian … in the trailer, it was all kids talk. I’m the only one who didn’t have a kid. Heath had just had a baby, Maggie just had a baby, Christian has two kids, Gary Oldman had two kids. It was a lot of baby pictures and a lot of baby talk. That was mostly what was going on. I met Maggie’s, I met Christian’s, I didn’t meet Heath’s but it was a lot of pictures.”

Michael Caine calls Heath “very ordinary. He was a very quiet man, and very, very nice.”

He says, “I worked with Heath very early on. I’d seen his performance. We just sat there talking. He was very ordinary. He wasn’t preparing – you know – like ‘please leave me, I’ve got to be with my script.’ Some actors do that. We’re just talking, and the director said ‘OK we’re ready,’ and Heath goes into the elevator and he has to come out of the elevator and into a party and take over. Batman and I are giving a party.  Out came this guy, The Joker, and I stood there absolutely stunned. I didn’t have any dialogue or I would’ve forgotten it. He went straight past me and over to Batman. I just sat there flabbergasted. Right through it we just talked, and he would do it over and over again – just come out with this energy.”

He adds, “I said to him one day ‘Jesus, I’m too old to do anything as energetic as this.’ And I said ‘wait a minute, I couldn’t have done anything as energetic as this when I was your age.’ It’s astonishing.”

Heath surely would’ve delighted in the Batmobile staged outside on the black carpet, and the motorcycle prop used in the movie that greets partygoers on the way into the screening.

The Dark Knight is in theaters Friday.

Christian Bale Goes Batty Over Batsuit

June 25th, 2008

Batman may look kick-ass in his Batsuit glory, but don’t think it felt that way wearing it.

"The first movie was like having a vice tightened around my skull for months on end," Christian Bale tells Parade.com of donning the leather suit in 2005’s Batman Begins. "I convinced myself only helped me to portray the rage that this alter ego, Batman, felt."

But the actor didn’t let his dissatisfaction go unnoticed. Costume designers took his complaints to heart and fashioned a more forgiving suit for next month’s The Dark Knight.

"Thank God," Christian sales. "I’m so appreciative of that. They were able to make that a whole lot more comfortable."

Not to mention, better ventilated as well — there’s no air-conditioning involved, but the 34-year-old isn’t sweating his butt off in it either.

"It was nothing so advanced as that. It was just material that was able to breathe a little, so that I wasn’t leaving the puddles of sweat behind me if I stood still for longer than 30 seconds," he says.

And should there be a third flick in the series, Christian is hoping for even more comfort — and more character development.

"What Batman is all about is a double-sided edge; there’s a duality to this character, which makes him still interesting to play in the sequel—I hope in a third," he says. "And I’m working with people who are going to inspire but also demand that I come up with something new. I do love the unknown, but there’s more to investigate in Bruce Wayne and Batman."

  • Revered comedian/actor and perennial Emmy nominee Bob Newhart has us rolling at 78!
  • Let’s hope she doesn’t break a leg! Rose McGowan turns 34.
  • Former bombshell Racquel Welch still has it at 67!
  • It’s Batman’s birthday! No, not Christian Bale, but the original celluloid Caped Crusader — Michael Keaton, who’s 56 today.
  • No crystal or watch exchanges for Babyface and Tracey Edmonds. The exes would’ve celebrated their 15th anniversary today.
