The Billion Dollar Quartet

February 27th, 2009

What we wouldn’t have given for a seat at the Tokyo karaoke bar where four of Hollywood’s hottest — and most bankable — stars sang the night away!

According to JustJared.com, Twilight star Robert Pattinson — in Japan to promote the movie — bumped into Hugh Jackman at their hotel, and then joined him and Australia director Baz Luhrmann at a nearby bar to belt out a few tunes.

It seems that Hugh and Rob are pals after last Sunday’s Oscars, where the Aussie hosted and the Brit presented.

Later RPattz’s co-stars, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner rocked up and rocked out as well.

And it was more a case of day-break than Twilight when they finally put down the microphones and emerged from the bar at 3am.

With Twilight setting box offices around the world on fire, and Australia set to break the $200 million mark this weekend, that’s a more bankable group than the Million Dollar Quartet — the legendary moment when Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins got together around a piano.

Nicole Kidman Honors Baz Luhrmann

January 26th, 2009

Nicole Kidman flies in from Nashville to present the Excellence in the Arts Award to her Australia writer/director/producer Baz Luhrmann during the Jacob’s Creek New York Black Tie Gala held Friday.

Even though Nicole has said, “I can’t look at this movie and be proud of what I’ve done,” the director harbors no hard feelings.

“Of course I would work with her again – at the drop of a hat,” Baz tells me. “All the work we’ve done has always reflected where we are in the journey, so I hope I’m working with her when she’s 100. I won’t reach 100, unfortunately, but she will. She’s Nicole.”

Even though Hugh Jackman bails due to a film commitment, the event held during Australia Week brings out the proudest celebs from the land Down Under.

Young Brandon Walters, who appears in Australia, is visiting the U.S. for the first time. He’s thrilled to see Nicole tonight.

“She bought me a piano keyboard,” he says.

Aussie actress Alexandra Bard, who tells me she was “connected” to Heath Ledger, hopes to clear up rumors about his demise.

“All the things with the drugs that came out after his death were really distasteful, and I don’t believe that it’s accurate at all. It’s not how he deserves to be remembered. It’s so ridiculous. I think most people would be lying if they said they’ve never played around with something. He wasn’t a habitual user.”

Former 24 star Sarah Wynter, who hails from New South Wales, offers high praise for her old costar Kiefer Sutherland.

“He’s really lovely. He’s a cowboy type of guy. I kind of like that. He’s very rugged, rides horses.”

As for the way he handled his 48-day jail sentence for DUI in 2007?

“I think he took his sentence like a man, and he didn’t try to get out of it. He just did it. He didn’t try to bargain anything.”

Under her Calvin Klein gown, this mom of one, who is married to Details editor-in-chief Dan Peres, is hiding a secret weapon: Spanx.

“I got ready at my husband’s office, and he said ‘why are you wearing bicycle shorts? Are you going to ride over there on a bike?’ I’m like ‘no, honey, you’re not used to seeing me in my underwear before I put a gown on.’”

Their son Oscar recently turned 1.

Nicole: “I Squirmed When I Saw Australia”

January 9th, 2009

Now here’s something you don’t see everyday – a movie star giving an honest assessment of their work. And not a very complimentary one, either.

Nicole Kidman has said that she ‘can’t feel proud’ of her performance in Baz Luhrmann’s epic Australia.

In fact, she says she "couldn’t connect emotionally" to the movie and "squirmed" when she saw herself playing British aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley at the premiere in Oz!

Remembering the November screening in Sydney, which she attended with husband Keith Urban, the star told 2dayFM, "I can’t look at this movie and be proud of what I’ve done.

"I sat there and I looked at Keith and went ‘Am I any good in this movie?’"

And although she said that her co-star Hugh Jackman was great in the movie, she added, "It’s just impossible for me to connect to it emotionally at all."

Nicole wasn’t alone in her harsh assement. Many critics savaged the film – and it seems that she had an idea what she was in for.

London’s Daily Mail reports that Tom Cruise’s ex was so nervous about her performance, she left the country straight after the premiere with Keith and daughter Sunday Rose, so that she wouldn’t have to face the critics’ response.

"We ran because I didn’t want to read anything. I didn’t want to know," she admitted on air.

Stars Step Out For ‘Australia’

November 26th, 2008

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban are greeted by shrieks when they arrive at 6:20 p.m. for the Australia premiere held at NYC’s Ziegfeld Theatre.

Why should we see this epic World War II drama shot in the Northern Territory and Western Australia – featured in my Australia travel story in the OK! out now?

“It celebrates love and it celebrates life, and I think that sort of thing is good for the world right now,” Sunday Rose’s mom says, with hubby Keith on her arm.

Heavily pregnant Naomi Watts, Famke Janssen, Helena Christensen, John Leguizamo, Padma Lakshmi and Ashleigh Banfield troll through. Lydia Hearst and Kelsey Grammer chat.

Here’s Olivia Newton-John, who is lovingly holding hubby John Easterling. What does she miss most about Australia?

“The bird songs in the air because there are more species of birds – and you don’t realize until you leave there – how much song there is in the air that you don’t hear here and you don’t hear anywhere else,” she tells me. “There’s a sense of freedom and beauty in Australia that there is nowhere else.”

Hugh Jackman waves, and wife Deborra-Lee Furness jokes about his swelling ego. “I always thought he was the sexiest man alive,” she laughs.

Director Baz (rhymes with “jazz,” his rep says - ha!) Luhrmann reveals a precious moment he shared with Nicole.

“There’s a big scene that happens under that boab tree, and I bring it back to do close-ups,” he says. “She said to me [flails hands] … Whenever she does this thing with her hands, it’s like she has a fan. I’m like ‘yes, dear one?’ She said ‘I’m pregnant.’ And she burst into tears. I was tearful, too.”

How has Nicole changed since she welcomed daughter Sunday Rose in July?

“She’s changed, but she doesn’t change,” Baz reveals. “She grows, she matures, she learns, we learn, we become more mature with each other. She cuts to the chase more. Time wasting is the greatest lesson of life, I think. How not to waste time, because it’s the most precious commodity.”

Australia is in theaters now.

And, pick up the OK! out now (cover line: “Reese Witherspoon: Back On Top!”) to read about my Australian Outback adventure pegged to the sights you’ll see in this film.

My trip to Northern Territory and Western Australia was out of this world. I stayed in wildlife luxury accommodations such as Bamurru Plains (it was see-through, but they said the animals couldn’t see inside), Bullo River Station, El Questro Homestead (Kylie Minogue’s favorite. I could ’ve spent the rest of my life in their Zebedee Springs!), Home Valley Station and Moonshadow Villas.

My trip was jampacked with scenic cruises, crocodile spotting, waterfall swims, private planes, helicopter flights, horseback riding and Aboriginal art. And, I ate crocodile and saw wallabys. I greatly enjoyed the pink diamonds at Kimberley Fine Diamonds in Kununurra. Hugh Jackman even went crocodile-spotting at the owner’s home. Loved it!

Amanda Bynes Gets on Board

November 29th, 2007 / Author: OK! Staff

No offense, skiers, but snowboarding is a cooler sport, as
least to Amanda Bynes. The Hairspray star tells OK! she’d much rather hit the
slopes on one board than on two.

“I’ve actually only snowboarded once but I’ve skied seven times,” she tells OK!
at the opening of the new Burton store in West
Hollywood
. “I look forward to snowboarding in the future. It’s a
cooler sport.”

She may want to prepare her body for it though. Declaring herself to be “not
athletic,” Amanda confesses she’s not often found breaking a sweat at the gym.

“I try but not really,” she says. “I try to walk instead of
drive. Yoga if I can.”

As for her career, there may be another musical in sight for the 20-year-old if
she gets her wishes.

“I would love to work with Baz Luhrmann or Tim Burton. They’re
so creative and artsy. Baz is exciting.”
