How Stars Celebrate Father’s Day

June 15th, 2008

Being a dad changes everything. For one thing, proud papas get a new holiday in Father’s Day.

Kirk Cameron reveals his tradition.

“What happens on Father’s Day is I’ll stay in bed and the kids want me to just hang out there until they can cook breakfast and bring it to me,” the Still Growing author, who is father to six kids, tells me. “They make me scrambled eggs, maybe some bacon, maybe some coffee just the way I like it. They bring me cards that they’ve made at school. The best thing about Father’s Day is that you have kids, and you get to love them and enjoy them.”

Billy Ray Cyrus tries to give daughter Miley her space. “I’ve always tried to be her best friend and that’s what I continue to do now,” he says. “I’m always there and I’m always a phone call away or a text. She always knows if she needs me, I’m there.”

Andrew McCarthy likes everything about being a dad to his Pokemon-loving son – “except getting up early.”

Bobby Brown says his two girls got a kick out of his turn as a country singer on CMT’s Gone Country.

“Once daddy gets honest with himself, they appreciate me more and more every day,” he tells me.

Chris Daughtry’s two kids are musical. His son is taking drum lessons, and his daughter is taking piano lessons.

“You have the chance of allowing them or teaching them to do something greater than you,” he tells me. “Even be a better dad than you.”

Meanwhile, stars including Clay Aiken and Matthew McConaughey are waiting for their first true Father’s Day now that the ladies in their lives are expecting. What advice does father-of-two Matthew Fox have for these new dads?

“Being a father is an individual experience and I wouldn’t really feel qualified to give anyone advice other than just trying to do the very, very best job you possibly can,” he tells me.

Kyle McLachlan is also infanticipating with wife Desiree.

“We’re expecting a little one at the end of July,” he tells me. “We’re both in New York and L.A., so we’re getting both apartments ready for where we’re going to be and where he’s going to stay.”

Indeed, dads hold great power. Just ask Rider Strong.

“I got screwed,” he says of his moniker, which he attributes to hippie parents. “I didn’t realize I had a porn name until I was fifteen. Too bad. There are worse things.”

What’s the best advice Robert DeNiro gave daughter Drena?

“Just use your eyes,” she tells me. “Don’t move your face so much. Use your eyes. That’s the most remembered advice.”

Snoop Dogg tells children it’s important to pay attention to their dads (and moms).

“Parents are teachers,” he tells me. “These are people who have knowledge and wisdom and they’re trying to pass it on to you. When they give you that, even if you don’t like it or understand it – take it in for what it’s worth because one day you’ll hear that voice again and you’ll be able to make a decision. You can say ‘I’m going to do the right thing or the wrong thing, but at least I know what the right thing is and the wrong thing is.’”

Country singer Jason Michael Carroll appreciates the good times with his little ones.

“I take them to school during the week. I’ll walk them to class. They think it’s cool everyone’s running up asking for dad’s autograph. I’m soaking it all in because in a few years, I’m pretty sure they’ll walk a few steps ahead – or even worse – they’ll tell me to wait in the car.”

Country singer Darryl Worley enjoys his baby girl, Savannah, who is ten weeks old.

“She’s a little red-headed fireball,” he says. “She’s already showing her personality. She’s gonna have a temper, she’s gonna be stubborn. Her mom says she’s definitely my child. It’s probably the best thing that’s happened to me in a lot of different ways. Suddenly I’ve got a real reason to fight.”

Law and Order: SVU
star Chris Meloni takes daughter Sophie bike riding and to the playground during the summer. “We play Monopoly,” he tells me, whispering, “She cheats.”

Sophie shouts, “Do not!”

What’s the best thing about Chris as a dad?

“That he loves me,” she says shyly, hugging him.

Miley Delights Backstage at the CMT Awards

April 24th, 2008

After shivering down the purple carpet before the CMT Awards, stars do their thing onstage and then stop by the press room stationed at Nashville’s Belmont University. We dine on turkey wraps, potato chips and chocolate chip cookies inbetween flashes of greatness.

I bump into Miley Cyrus in the hallway, who has a gaggle of hangers-on trailing her every move, and she gives me a shout-out. Dad Billy Ray Cyrus seems thrilled to be living in her shadow. Really! He couldn’t be more gleeful.

Taylor Swift says it’s the best night she can remember. “There’s nothing that’s more important to me than my fans and making them happy,” she says of winning the fan-voted video of the year and female video of the year awards. “I never want to let them down. I’m absolutely so flattered and humbled.”

Three-time winner Kellie Pickler phones in from Scottsdale, Arizona. Get this!

“I am wearing pajamas now, but when I was on the satellite, I was wearing a Dolce and Gabbana top and no pants because it was only top up. It was only me. But I did have some great shoes on!”

Snoop Dogg gives me a knowing wink and calls me “baby” … Alan Jackson and I share a laugh after he pats himself with a tissue to wipe the sweat off his brow … Bobby Brown thinks his life is made for country music … Luke Bryan is pleased with the “party mode” on campus … LeAnn Rimes pretends to answer a ringing cell phone … Jewel and Tom Arnold riff on the presidential candidates, and urge Al Gore to run again. “He would win,” Tom says.

Little Big Town’s Kimberly Roads says gift bags make her feel guilty, but groupmate Karen Fairchild doesn’t agree. “Our families love the gift bags. Moms and dads usually try to get their hands on the gift bags.”

Brooks and Dunn’s Ronnie Dunn got last-minute help from Billy Ray in getting tickets to the show after a neighbor bugged him to snag seats through an Indiana radio station. “They said ‘you’re one of the biggest celebrities,’ and I said ‘I don’t have a chance.’ I tried to call for an hour but the lines were tied up.” He ditched the neighbor, and brought his 13-year-old daughter.

Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox thinks their award looks like Snoop’s microphone, and would like to get one custom-made for their tour. Joe Don Rooney lights up when we speak. Ohhh! So cute.

Reality doesn’t bite for Dancing With The Stars castoff Julianne Hough, who is thrilled she met Faith Hill. “I was like ‘oh my gosh, I’m meeting my idol.’ I told her ‘you are so inspiring and you’ve inspired me so much.’”

Celebrity Apprentice finalist Trace Adkins is trying a hand at acting, but says “I’m never going to stray faraway from what puts groceries on the table. There’s a saying in country music that ‘you’ve gotta dance with the one that brought you.’”

Naomi Judd makes me chuckle when she reveals her age as “sexy plus two.” Whew!

Maureen "Marcia Brady" McCormick and Diana DeGarmo give a little wave. We had a great time together at the Lady Antebellum CMT Welcome Party the night before. ?

Check out the OK! on stands this week for more coverage of the CMT Awards. Katie Fights Back: Don’t Mess With My Family is the cover line.

Bobby Brown Dated Madonna!

April 3rd, 2008 / Author: cwillett

Bobby Brown is ready to tell-all in his new book, Bobby Brown: The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nothing But. The scandal ridden singer, who divorced from his superstar wife Whitney Houston last year, said that he was intimate with her Madgesty before he got serious with Whitney.

He said, "By the time I reached my third single on the Don’t Be Cruel album, I was one of the biggest stars in the world. You know what that means. With success comes the women! A wise man once told me that. At this time, I probably had dated half of the industry including Madonna."

"I met Madonna early in my career. She used to open up shows for New Edition in New York at the beginning of her career," he continued, "so running back into her and getting to know her better at the height of my success was like a reunion. The list goes on from the who’s who to the flavor of the month."

The book also talks about his marriage to Whitney and all his bad boy antics. The book hits bookstores this May.

Maureen ‘Marcia Brady’ McCormick Made For Country Music?

January 25th, 2008

Maureen McCormick is the surprise hit featured on Gone Country, CMT’s reality series about celebs who want to become country singers.

Host John Rich, 34, of Big & Rich fame, called to chat from his Nashville pad.

“What surprised me about her is she’s an emotional roller coaster all the time,” he tells me. “She’s either laughing at the top of her lungs or bawling her eyes out every ten minutes. She’s unpredictable. Once you get to know her, you know that she wears her heart on her sleeve, which is a positive if you’re going to make country music. You’ve gotta be able to tap into that stuff. I was shocked. She was able to get serious when it was time to get serious.”

John calls her ditty The Price I’ve Gotta Pay For Being Me the best song written in the competition that includes Bobby Brown, American Idol’s Diana DeGarmo, Julio Iglesias Jr., Sisqo, Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider and Carnie Wilson. The winner will record a country single produced by John.

“It’s about her life,” he says. “Somebody that’s been typecast like that her entire life … she’s like ‘I’m Marcia Brady, but I’m not Marcia Brady. I’m Maureen McCormick.’ Everybody’s like ‘no you’re Marcia Brady.’ You can imagine that being your life. That would drive you nuts after awhile. You’d have to learn to deal with that.”

Does the former Marcia Brady, now 51, have what it takes to become Nashville’s next big star?

Maureen proved to be a real surprise on that show because out of all the singers, she’s the weakest singer but wrote the strongest song,” he tells me. “In music, a lot of times the greatest song wins. Some of the greatest songs of all time were sung by people who were not the greatest singers. Kris Kristofferson is a great example of somebody who’s an OK singer but an absolute genius songwriter, and had a great career.”

Catch Gone Country, which begins tonight at 8pm ET/PT on CMT.

Maureen McCormick Goes Country

January 22nd, 2008

Former Brady Bunch star Maureen McCormick isn’t in the TV suburbs any more. She’s Gone Country for the new CMT celeb-infused reality show. And get this, the 51-year-old star is going to sing!

Maureen, who played Marcia on The Brady Bunch, has a little bit of experience in the crooning department. She sang such songs as “It’s a Sunshine Day” as a teenager with her brothers and sisters on the hit sitcom. My Los Angeles counterpart, Carole Glines, recently caught up with the actress to find out why she’s one of the celebrities giving country singing a shot on Gone Country.

“I was asked to pursue a singing career when I was 18 or 19, but I just think it was the wrong timing," she says. "My parents really wanted me to just go back to normal life as much as possible at that point. I was acting and there’s only so much you can do.”

When the Gone Country producers approached her, Maureen jumped at the chance to test out her vocal chords again. “People say that I sound a lot like Loretta Lynn. She wasn’t an extraordinary voice but she really sang from her heart and you felt what she sang, great style, great lyrics. People were comparing me to her; I was flabbergasted.”

On the show, which also stars Bobby Brown, Carnie Wilson, and Twisted Sister singer Dee Snider, Maureen lived in a house with the other celebs and got to write her own song with country experts in Nashville. “I love singing from the heart and the song that I wrote is about losing my mom and how I wish she was still here,” Maureen confides. “It really meant a lot to me. When the lyrics were done, I just sat there and cried and cried and cried. It’s probably going to be on the air. I was just a basket case.”

And who did Maureen bond with most in the house? Bad boy Bobby Brown! “I love Bobby Brown. He and I became like this close."

Maureen adds, “I honestly think it’s one of the best shows I’ve ever done. I just think people are going to love it—it’s reality combined with American Idol. They brought seven of the most different people together in this one house. It’s really interesting what happens. I made so many friends in Nashville."

Maureen might get that recording career off the ground yet. “I want to record a country album so badly! It would be a dream come true."

Maybe onscreen sibs Eve Plumb (Jan) and Barry Williams (Greg) will sing a cameo.

Gone Country premieres Friday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. on CMT.
