Boy George Released From Jail Early

May 11th, 2009
He did a little longer inside than Paris Hilton. But Boy George still got off pretty lightly with his jail term.

The ’80s pop star was sentenced to 15 months for assaulting and imprisoning a prostitute.

But, according to reports from the UK, he was released Monday after serving just four months at Edmunds Hill Prison in Suffolk, England.

The Culture Club singer, who’s real name is George O’Dowd, got out early for good behavior, but will have to wear an ankle tag and be on a curfew for the rest of his sentence.

The star was convicted on Jan. 16 this year of falsely imprisoning and assaulting Norwegian male prostitue Audun Carlsen, after he shackled him to a wall and whipped him with a chain in his London apartment.

According to witnesses who saw him leave the jail, his time inside seemed to have done him good. He was said to be looking "healthier and happier" than he did before he went in.

Boy George Gets 15 Months In Jail

January 16th, 2009

British 80s pop star Boy George has been jailed for 15 months for a nasty little incident in which he tied up a male prostitute and beating him with a chain.

A judge in England said he had no choice but to jail the Karma Chameleon singer for "falsely imprisoning" Norwegian escort Audun Carlsen in April 2007.

Sentencing the star this morning, Judge David Radford called the act "shocking and degrading" and "so serious that only an immediate sentence of imprisonment can be justified," according to E! Online.

"In my view there can be no doubt that your premeditated, callous and humiliating handcuffing and detention of Mr. Carlsen shocked, degraded and traumatized him," added the judge at Snaresbrook court.

"He was deprived of his liberty and his human dignity without warning or proper explanation to him of its purpose, length or purported justification." Boy George, whose real name is George O’Dowd, had pleaded not guilty, but was convicted last month.

Boy George Convicted on False Imprisonment Charges

The verdict is in for ’80s pop icon Boy George, who was found guilty earlier today in a London court on charges of falsely imprisoning a Norwegian male escort by handcuffing him to a wall.

The bad news for the former Culture Club singer, 47, came at the end of two weeks of trial stemming from an April 2007 incident. The alleged victim in the case, Audun Carlsen, claimed that Boy George (real name George O’Dowd) had handcuffed him to the wall of the singer’s home and beaten him with a chain because he would not have intercourse with George.

During the trial, during which George did not testify, the pop star’s lawyer contended that the injuries sustained by Carlsen were consistent with bondage gear the Norwegian had worn.

However, in the end the jury sided with Carlsen. According to reports, the setencing phase of Boy George’s trial will resume in mid-January.

Boy George Cancels U.S. Tour

July 1st, 2008

You’re going to have to wait a little longer to see Boy George live.

The Culture Club star has officially canceled his North American summer tour after being denied a visa into the country due to outstanding crininal charges in London.

George received the news last week and looked into the matter to no avail.

"I was really hoping that the issue would be resolved and that some kind soul at the U.S. Visa Office would realize that if the police in the U.K. placed no restrictions on my movements, that should have been good enough for them," George said in a statement.

He continued, "I am very sorry that I will not see all my American fans this year, but I wish them a happy and healthy Fourth of July. I include the Visa Office in those good wishes and realize they are doing a very difficult job and I just got unlucky."

The U.S. Administration refused to issue papers to the 47-year-old as George is currently awaiting trial in London. He was arrested last spring when a male escort accused him of assault and false imprisonment. George has denied the claims.

The singer hopes to reschedule the tour for next winter.

Boy George Denied a U.S. Visa

First, Martha Stewart. Now, Boy George.

The British musician was denied a visa in the United States due to his outstanding arrest charges, putting his North American summer tour in jeopardy.

"At the moment, Boy George cannot come to the United States of America because he has been refused permission to enter by the USA Administration," his rep says in a statement. "This is not in respect of anything he has done in the past but because he is facing a trial in November in London for something that happened in April last year."

The 47-year-old was busted last year when a male escort accused him of assault and false imprisonment, which George vehemently denied. He was later released on bail.

"George’s lawyers in London have absolutely forbidden us to speak about the facts of that case and all I can say is that George is astounded at the decision and is having lawyers here in the States look at it in the hope that someone will change their mind," the statement continues. "George really would love to come to America and repay his American fans loyalty and that is why we are asking the US Authorities to reconsider their decision."

The singer/DJ’s 24-stop tour was scheduled to kick off in Las Vegas on July 11 and wrap up in Dallas on Aug. 23.

Boy George: Karma Sanitation!

June 11th, 2008

Two years after sweeping the streets of NYC as part of his court-mandated community service, 80s pop singer Boy George is returning to the Big Apple to perform a free concert for his former co-workers.

George will sing some of his hits at the NYC Department of Sanitation’s Family Day on August 17.

”The people I worked alongside showed great kindness to me at a very difficult time, and I wanted to thank them all in a way that would show my appreciation,” he said.

Michael A. Bimonte, a first deputy commissioner with the department, said, ”Keeping New York City safe and clean is a daunting challenge — as Boy George well knows — and we welcome his generous offer to entertain those who have made our city the cleanest it has been in more than 30 years.”

The British singer, who turns 47 on Saturday, was ordered to work for the department after pleading guilty to falsely reporting a burglary at his lower Manhattan apartment. The police officers who responded there found cocaine.

As a result, he took to the streets of Manhattan as a sanitation worker wearing an orange vest, dark capri pants, and shoes without socks.

Boy George, born George O’Dowd, is best known for his genre-bending stint in the group Culture Club, which charted hits including ”Karma Chameleon” and ”Do You Really Want to Hurt Me.”

He is launching a North American tour in Aspen on July 10.
