While You Were Sleeping

Valerie Bertinelli admitted that she was no angel during her marriage to Eddie Van Halen. On yesterday’s Oprah Winfrey Show the Jenny Craig spokes-body admitted that she cheated on the musician during their 20-year relationship. "He claims to this day that I cheated first, but I don’t know. I don’t know about the timing." Bertinelli was on the show plugging her new book, Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time.

Fans fumed over the exclusion of actor Brad Renfro from an Oscar tribute to actors who died over the past year. Renfro was dissed but Heath Ledger, who died just one week after Renfro, was included in the tribute. When asked why Renfro, who starred in The Client with Susan Sarandon, was snubbed (though he had been included in a Critic’s Choice Award In Memoriam tribute), Oscar spokesperson Leslie Unger said, “We can’t include everybody.” Another Oscar snub? Whoopi Goldberg was excluded from a montage of past Oscar hosts!

Extra has obtained the 9-1-1 call detailing the final moments of actor Brad Renfro’s life. On the tape, his girlfriend can be heard explaining to the phone operator that "his nose is bleeding. He doesn’t seem to be breathing," she says. "He’s completely passed out."

When the operator asks what happened, Renfro’s girlfriend says, "I’m not sure. I think he might have taken a couple of pills last night. I’ve been trying to wake him up to get ready and he just won’t move."

The phone operator continues to give instructions on how to do chest compressions, but in the end, it was too late to save the actor. The coroner later announced that 25-year-old Renfro had died from an accidental heroin overdose .

The L.A. County coroner has confirmed that 25-year old Brad Renfro died from an accidental overdose of heroin.

The cause of death was ruled "accute heroin/morphine intoxication," and the drugs were injected, according to the coroner’s office. "The final manner of death has been ruled an accident," the coroner reported. Renfro was found dead in his L.A. home on Jan. 15.

Brad Renfro Dies

January 15th, 2008

25-year old actor Brad Renfro was found dead this morning inside an L.A. home. The cause of death has not been determined.

According to the L.A. County Coroners Office, Renfro had reportedly been drinking with friends the evening before his death. An autopsy is expected as early as Wednesday.

The actor had a history of drug use, but had been working to stay clean following a string of drug convictions, including one for attempting to buy heroin from an undercover officer on L.A.’s Skid Row in 2005. ”He was working hard on his sobriety,” Renfro’s attorney, Richard Kaplan said today. ”He was doing well. He was a nice person.”

Renfro had just wrapped filming on a new movie, The Informers, also starring Winona Ryder and Billy Bob Thornton. A Tennessee native, his career began at the age of 12, when he won a lead role opposite Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones in The Client. Other acting jobs followed, including Sleepers, The Jacket, Deuces Wild and The Apt Pupil.

Sources say he never had any real guidance as he tried to navigate the rough waters of Hollywood.

Renfro’s trouble with the law started in 1998 when he was charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana, for which he avoided jail time with a plea deal. In 2001, he was placed on probation and ordered to pay steep fines for repairs to a 45 foot yacht he and a friend tried to steal in Florida the previous year.

He was arrested again in May 2001 and charged with underage drinking, violating the terms of his probation, and was ordered into alcohol rehabilitation the following March.

In May 2006, Renfro served 10 days in jail after pleading no contest to driving while intoxicated and guilty to attempted possession of heroin.

After one court appearance, Renfro opened up to reporters about his efforts at drug rehabilitation, saying he was ”tired of paying the consequences” for drinking and drug use and eager to get clean.
