Demi Lovato Admires Hilary, Christina — And Herself

November 6th, 2008

So, her best friend is Selena Gomez and her  “boys” are the Jonas Brothers, but there’s much more to Demi Lovato than the singing-and-acting sensation made famous by Camp Rock and her debut album, Don’t Forget.

The 16-year-old beauty, who can’t live without her BlackBerry, has a dog named Bailey and is the middle child of two sisters, ages 20 and 6. Her full name is Demetria, her nickname is Dem, and she doesn’t remember the last time she was grounded. “My parents and I are very close,” she says. “It’s been a long time.”

What’s her tour must-have?

“It’s a blow-dryer for my hair. When I get offstage, I’m sweating like a dog, so I’ll probably need to blow-dry my hair because it’ll be wet.”

She calls out Hayley Williams of Paramore as her fashion plate. “She has great style in her videos. I look up to her.” She tells me she hopes to be “the girl version of the Jonas Brothers” in the style department, but beautywise she looks no further than her mirror.

“I like to try and emphasize what I have, and not really look at other people,” she says.

But Demi isn’t shy about giving props to her Disney Channel role models.

“Definitely Hilary Duff because she carried out a great career and she’s still going. And Christina Aguilera. She was on Mickey Mouse Club, and look at her now.  She’s gotten so far.”

What does Demi want to be when she grows up?

“When I really, really grow up, I would like to continue this and also work as a director and continue writing.”

Get to Know Demi Lovato

August 25th, 2008

As the Disney Invasion continues to sweep the nation and light up the pop charts, the latest bright young face to join the ranks of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers is singer and songwriter Demi Lovato.

Though to discerning fans of children’s TV, the Texan teen might not be such an unfamiliar figure, having gotten her start as one of the young kids on Barney & Friends, where she met her best friend and fellow Disney star Selena Gomez.

"I remember always having inside jokes with Selena," Demi told OK! when we caught up with her at the Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day at the U.S. Open in NYC. "One time we went into the kitchen and grabbed a handful of gumballs and stuck them in our mouth and ran to school. They were like ‘what do you have in your mouth?’ and we’re like ‘nothing.’"

Looking back on those days, Demi says, "I’m like ‘wow, I was going through my awkward phase.’"

Well, she’s definitely out of that awkward phase and with her album, Don’t Forget , set to drop Sept. 23, some are already calling her the next Miley Cyrus, a claim Demi takes in stride. "She’s one of the most successful teenagers, and it’s an honor to be compared to her success," she explained.

It’s already been a huge summer for Demi, who co-starred in the hit film Camp Rock with the Jonas Bros. before joining them on their current "Burning Up" concert tour. Oh — and she just celebrated her sweet 16 on Aug. 20.

"We celebrated it all day, pretty much, during the concert," she explained. "I was really thankful because the crowd sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to me, so it was really awesome. But for my party I went to Applebees with my band. I had chicken fingers and grilled cheese."

Speaking of the Jonas boys, what did she think about the brothers sporting Team Demi and Team Selena shirts onstage? "They’re basically like my brothers," she told OK! "They’ll always have my back no matter what situation… They’re hilarious guys, and also they’ve got really big hearts that people don’t always see. They do see it in videos, and things like that, but they’re ten times more cool than you expect when you meet them and hang out with them all the time. And they’re very protective of me."

Well, if she’s so close to the Jonas Brothers, and she’s best friends with Selena, can Demi finally clear up whether or not her BFF is dating Nick Jonas? "I think they would look good together," she said coyly, adding, "But too bad they’re not."

And a good note to all the teen boys out there — Demi’s "definitely not dating anybody," she revealed.

Miley Looks to “Breakout” With New Disc

July 21st, 2008

Listen up, everyone: There could only be one Miley Cyrus.

There’s a lot of talk of up-and-coming Disney actresses Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato being the heir apparents to the Hannah Montana star, but Miley doesn’t see it that way.

"People are looking up to what I do. But, I don’t think there could be a next Miley," she tells Extra. "I think they should be the next Selena, Demi. Make their own way."

She certainly has done so for herself. The tween queen is bigger than ever and is set to release her new album, Breakout, tomorrow. The album, which features the single "7 Things," is a departure from her kid-friendly debut Meet Miley Cyrus.

"I wanted to embrace my older audience a little more, kind of taking shackles off and doing the music I wanted to do," she says of the disc. "There are the things I want to say to the world. I just want this to be a CD that you can let loose to and dance to and kind of forget all the crazy stuff!"

The 15-year-old needs to forget crazy stuff too, especially after her infamous Vanity Fair photo scandal, which brought more media attention on her than ever. But the singer isn’t letting it get to her.

"There’s going to be that no matter what," she says. "I am obviously under the public eye a lot. Instead of putting negativity to it, taking the opportunity to make it a positive thing."

Stars Recount Their Best Fourth Of Julys

July 4th, 2008

It’s time to honor the red, white and blue now that Independence Day is here. As we enjoy cookouts, parades and fireworks with friends and family, the stars fondly remember their favorite Fourths.

“I spent my summers at the Jersey Shore,” Taylor Swift tells me. “There was a Fourth of July parade, and we lived on the bay. All these boats would pass our house and we would try to hit them with water balloons and a slingshot.” Did she ever hit them? “All the time! It was a yacht club parade, so all the elite were dressed in their best. We would try to hit them with water balloons.”

Ashanti tells me, “I was at a barbecue with some friends. They were doing firecrackers in the yard, and one of the bushes caught on fire on the side of the house. One of the guys came running up the patio, and there were so many people there. There were kids, there were people in the pool, barbecuing, dancing, there was drinks all over. So somebody dumped the cooler on the bush, and the fire got bigger. The fire got huge. All the guys were pouring ice and buckets of water. I forgot how they finally got it out, but they finally got it out. It was hilarious. They had to get the fire trucks to come up to the house. It was very funny.”

Guys get especially rowdy.

Stephen Colbert tells me, “I grew up in South Carolina, so it all has to do with fireworks as a child. All fireworks are legal in South Carolina. I like blowing things up.”

Trace Adkins tells me, “I set the pasture on fire behind the house. I shot the bottle rocket off in the backyard, and it landed way back. We kept shooting bottle rockets and hadn’t noticed the whole pasture was on fire. It was real dry. I’ll never forget that. I was like 14.”

Stephen Baldwin tells me, “Out on Long Island, we used to get a pack of firecrackers. It was called a mat. A mat of firecrackers in America is when you buy fifty firecrackers together and they’re all tied together by a fuse, and you light them off. One of the most fun memories that I have is when we lit off a mat of firecrackers in the house, and my dad whooped all of us. It was quite amusing.”

What’s Matthew Modine’s July 4 tradition? “Go find a park and sit under the fireworks.”

Clay Aiken tells me, “I grew up going to the fireworks.”

Camp Rock’s Alyson Stoner’s favorite Fourths have been in Toledo, Ohio, with her family.

“I love barbecuing. Being comfortable and being with family is the best feeling.”

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl star Madison Davenport says, “We had this giant crocodile across our lawn, but it wasn’t a real crocodile thank goodness, or else I wouldn’t have fingers. It was a Slip-N-Slide, and it was so fun because it was giant. It took up two lawns. It was the funnest thing. And we had snow cones, my mom made her famous cake – the American flag cake – and it was really fun.”

Some stars’ best times have been spent jet-setting on the holiday.

John Leguizamo adds, “I think I was in Ecuador on a ship, running around and drinking, carousing, water-skiing, near the Galapagos. It was pretty cool.”

How will they celebrate this year?

“I don’t really have a tradition, but a lot of my friends have barbecues, so I’ll probably do something like that,” Brittany Snow tells me.

Miranda Lambert adds, “Sparklers are my favorite. I love fireworks.”

Miley Out at Disney?

June 26th, 2008

Following controversial MySpace photos, a near-nude Vanity Fair photo shoot and — perhaps worst of all — dwindling numbers for Hannah Montana, Disney executives may be preparing to throw in the towel on their biggest star, Miley Cyrus.

“Tween properties often burn hot and then fizzle out,” a Disney insider tells OK! about the 15-year-old singer and actress. “So with Miley, there has to be a Plan B.”

A sign that it’s time for a changing of the guard?

Newcomers Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez are being groomed for stardom. Fifteen-year-old Demi stars alongside the Jonas Brothers in the latest Disney smash, Camp Rock, and will open for the group’s sold-out tour.

Selena, also 15, stars on the hit show Wizards of Waverly Place, and will only say she is “flattered” by comparisons to Miley.

However, a Disney rep assures OK! the channel is “committed” to the Hannah Montana franchise, with a movie version opening next spring.

Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato Take NYC

June 20th, 2008

The Jonas Brothers touch down in NYC to chat about their new film, Camp Rock, which overtakes the Disney Channel, ABC and ABC Family this weekend.

Proclaimed to be the new High School Musical, this feel-good flick takes viewers to summer camp. The Jonas Brothers, who play the fictional band Connect Three, and newcomer Demi Lovato, break out as Disney stars in the musical comedy.

First, I see the guys during the Camp Rock premiere, which takes place at Ziegfeld Theater. Throngs of tween girls are lined up and shrieking as Mama Jonas, Papa Jonas, and of course – Bonus Jonas – a.k.a. Frankie – stroll by, and then the Jonas Brothers arrive together. Frankie, 7, gives a thumbs-up pose before going inside. (He loves this! Such a ham.)

Nick, 15, shows off his new, shorter ‘do.

“He woke up one morning, and went ‘I need to cut my hair guys,’” Joe, 18, says.

What’s their dream storyline for Camp Rock 2?

“That we could be in it?” Joe says. “Something like where they have to shut down the camp. Maybe winter camp?”

Kevin, 20, adds, “I’m thinking camp in Hawaii. Anyone else feeling me? You’ve gotta come visit. I have the ‘in!’”

The next day, I roll on over to Le Parker Meridien Hotel, where I see the guys again – for the sixth time in six weeks! It’s amazing what’s happened to them – they sent me an official Jonas Brothers electric guitar a few years ago before they were household names. (That was really nice!)

I notice the guys say hello to each person in the room when they enter at 3:10 p.m. Joe tells me he wants a girl who “doesn’t only greet the people they think they’re supposed to greet but greets everybody when they walk into a room.” He’s practicing what he preaches.

Which brother spends the most time in front of the mirror?

Nick says it’s Frankie.

“I think we all do a pretty good job with it, making sure we don’t take too much time,” Joe says.

Nick chimes in, “Joe is always like, ‘does this look good?’ and I’m like ‘yeah, it looks fine.’”

Joe adds, “He’s a good stylist when it comes to decisions. I’m like ‘Nick, does this look good? Can you work with this?’”

Kevin says, “During soundcheck, when we’re doing vocal warm-ups, we sit in front of the mirror because we want to look good onstage.”

Oh really…

What’s the strangest thing they’ve eaten?

“I had a stingray,” Kevin says. “They pinch the meat on the side, and then they flip it over. Great stuff. That’s OK to say, right? (Yes.) It’s not an endangered species or something, or I’d get in trouble.”

Blech!

Are the Jonas Brothers getting tired of their fast-paced life?

“No, we’re pretty good,” Joe says. “I think later today our jet lag will hit us. We flew from Paris two days ago, and we’re going to Italy tonight.”

Talk about jet-set!

With Camp Rock, Demi, 15, may be poised for Miley Cyrus-like fame, but she doesn’t let it phase her.

“I’m not expecting anything,” she says. “You can believe the hype and get your hopes up, but I’d rather just say ‘thank you’ to all the compliments and continue doing what I love to do. If I believe it at all or if I expect things, things may not turn out how they seem. I’m just going to continue acting. I don’t really mind if I am [famous] or not.”

Parting gifts include a Camp Rock bag stuffed with a Camp Rock sweatshirt, Camp Rock hat and Camp Rock soundtrack. All right!

Catch Camp Rock airing on the Disney Channel, ABC and ABC Family this weekend.

What the Jonas Brothers Look for in Girls!

June 18th, 2008

Listen up, girls! The way to a Jonas brother’s heart is through your mom.

"[I look for] somebody who is really good to mom, somebody who likes to have fun," middle brother Joe Jonas tells OK!.

And hopefully mom has taught you a few manners as well.

"It’s really important that when they walk into a room, they don’t only greet the people they think they’re supposed to greet, but they greet everybody," he continues.

As for eldest bro Kevin, he needs a gal who isn’t, well, needy.

"It’s a girl you can talk to on the phone and it be okay that you’re not always there," he says.

All three Jonas Brothers, which includes youngest Nick, are currently single and have famously declared their abstinence with purity rings. The bands can be seen in their latest Disney flick, Camp Rock, premiering Friday; however, the choice to wear them in the movie wasn’t deliberate.

"It’s just like keeping your favorite watch on," Kevin says. "We just wear it all the time."

The three play a fictional band, Connect Three, in the teleflick, about an aspiring teen singer Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato). Described as a "rock ‘n’ roll Cinderella story," the trio helps Mitchie achieve her music dreams along the way.

"I think it’s a great movie that everyone can relate with – either with our character or Demi’s character," Joe says. "Any of the characters, really, who just want to fit in. It’s the same thing with Connect Three. You want people to understand who you are. People will relate with Demi’s character, and they’ll be like ‘I just want to be that girl who stands out.’ Really just being yourself does that more than having to push it."

Miley Cyrus Missed at Disney Games

May 15th, 2008

While Miley Cyrus gets her beauty rest to gear up for the Disney Games concert, her fellow Disney Channel stars wake up bright and early for Disney Games.

Later, she’ll rock the house in her first appearance since the Vanity Fair scandal. Miley opens the rain-soaked show ahead of Jordan Pruitt, Demi Lovato, Cheetah Girls and Jonas Brothers.

“I see a sign in the crowd that says ‘Miley I’m praying for you’ — thank you,” she tells the crowd at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. “I couldn’t be more appreciative of that.”

Until then, her channelmates bide their time participating in Olympic-style challenges during Disney Games. The Florida sun is hot, but the stars keep cool in a shaded tent. And get this! Disney Channel has flown in their stars from 15 countries. Hello, Berlitz!

One person who misses Miley is her Hannah Montana co-star Moises Arias. What advice has she given him?

“It’s very important to learn how you hang around with the fans, and how you deal with the fans. She told me ‘don’t get too rushed. Listen to everybody. Be patient. Be really cool with everybody. Make them feel special.’ We’re like brother and sister.”

In fact, Moises can’t wait to join Miley for a spin on Disney Hollywood Studios ride Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster and Animal Kingdom’s Everest. Woo-hoo!

Mob scene! The Jonas Brothers take a break from the Games to do interviews. What’s the hardest part about being famous?

“Staying true to who you are as a person,” Joe Jonas says.

Next up is Chelsea Staub, who will appear with the Jonas Brothers on their upcoming Disney Channel show J.O.N.A.S.

“Everything they do is a blast,” she tells me. “I had a scene with Joe one time, and we’re supposed to have a little action in the background before the camera comes into our scene. Joe passes me a note halfway through it, and we’re in a school hallway, where there’s lockers everywhere. I open it up, and it says ‘see you in math.’ Then he walks off. He’s funny.”

Nick Jonas is drinking a Coke while Selena Gomez signs autographs in the blazing Florida sun.

Jennifer Stone appears with Selena on the Wizards of Waverly Place. What’s Selena really like? “She and I will talk about boys. She’s just as insecure about guys as we all are – but she seems so comfortable with guys. And she eats everything. She’s a human vacuum. She will eat any kind of food. I’ve seen her drink pickle juice before. It’s gross but she likes it. She’s a huge pickle fan.”

Camp Rock’s Alyson Stoner looks up to Hilary Duff as her Disney role model. “She designed the formula for Disney kids,” Alyson tells me. “She was the first one to break away from Disney and tap into other things. She did her music, her clothing, her perfume, she’s a beautiful person and still so down-to-earth. I look up to her.”

What’s the best thing about being a Disney star for Camp Rock’s Meaghan Jette Martin? “Everything!” she tells me. “We went to Magic Kingdom last night, and I was walking around the park, don’t have to wait in line, just walk on the ride. Then the fireworks show started at Epcot, and we drive over the Epcot. We’re standing in the VIP section watching it, and I’m like ‘I love my life.’ Disney is like one big family. All the other Disney Channel stars are so nice. We joke that we attend Disney High School ‘cause that’s kind of what we do.”

During my downtime, I catch up with friends at the Magic Kingdom and Disney Hollywood Studios. Love the park-hopper pass! I was in the Walt Disney World College Program. It’s great to get back to Hollywood Boulevard at the Disney Studios. Seems like I was sweeping streets just yesterday – even if it was years ago.
