Carnie Wilson: I’m Pregnant!

November 5th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Carnie Wilson – who lost nearly 50 pounds this year with OK! exclusively following her struggle to get slim and healthy – is now announcing her happy baby news. The singer and her musician husband, Rob Bonfiglio, are pregnant with their second child.

"My due date is June,” Carnie, 40, proudly tells OK!. “We’re thrilled.” Here, the star reveals how she’ll stick to her diet and exercise routine while pregnant.

How did you find out you were expecting?

I was making dinner, and I took a home-pregnancy test. There was a second line, and I jumped and said, “Oh, my god, I’m pregnant!” Lola [my 3-year-old daughter] and I started screaming and jumping for joy. She was so excited!

How did you tell your husband?

I couldn’t get a hold of Rob because he was playing a jazz gig. I taped the pregnancy test to the front door and drew a picture of little stick figures of Daddy, Mommy, Lola and then a little tiny one. I jumped out of bed at midnight and went into the kitchen and I see him holding the stick. He took me in his arms and goes, “Here we go again, honey.” He was happy.

What are your hopes for the pregnancy?

I can’t stop thinking about twins! My sister had twins; my grandmother was a twin and my grandmother’s aunt had twins. I had my first ultrasound and we only saw one sac, but it’s not confirmed that it’s not two because one could be hiding in back of the other…. We’ll see!

How will your condition affect your workouts?

I’m still doing my inner-core strength training. I’m going to increase my walking — instead of three days a week, I’m going to go for five.

Did you expect to get pregnant so quickly after losing the weight?

I did, actually. We had sex before, during and after ovulation. I was really keeping track of it, and it worked. Also, my body is so healthy now. I think we might have conceived to “She’s Leaving Home” by The Beatles! You’ve said you’re hoping for a boy.

Any idea on names yet?

We saw our first ultrasound yesterday. Lola pointed to the screen and was laughing, “That’s my brother Jake!” She wants to name the baby Jake, but Rob said no. In an Italian family, it’s traditional for the son to be named after the father, at least the first-born male.

What does motherhood mean to you?

The most joy you ever can feel is the love for your child. Children teach you so much. Motherhood is challenging, but it’s so fun.

OK! Exclusive: Carnie Wilson: “I Lost 50 Pounds!”

October 24th, 2008

She did it! After starting a diet and exercise program in the spring, Carnie Wilson has taken off nearly 50 pounds, with OK! documenting every step of the way. When we first visited Carnie in March, she admitted that she had "hit rock bottom" with her weight and ballooned to 208 pounds.

After gastric bypass surgery in 1999, she went from 300 pounds to 146. Sadly, Carnie slipped back into bad habits through the years. But now, after following a sensible regimen, she’s at a healthy 160 and is determined to keep the weight off – even as she tries to have a second child with husband Rob Bonfiglio to join their daughter, Lola, 3.

OK!: Congratulations on reaching your goal. How does it feel?

It feels spectacular! I’m so proud. I was determined to get my body to a healthy weight to prepare for the rest of my life and also for a baby. When I put my mind to something, I can do it. Some days I’ll wake up and be like, "I’m not there yet" and there will be a little voice that says, "But you’ve come so far." If I get caught up in self-loathing, I stop it quickly and look on the bright side.

OK!: Do you feel super confident now?

I have a bounce in my walk. It’s not that I feel sexier; I just feel more proud. I think when you feel proud about something you do, you radiate that positive energy and that is sexy. That is confidence.

OK!: Do you have any cheat foods?

I bake cheesecake for other people and taste it and spit it out. Every six or seven weeks, I have a tiny bit of dark chocolate and I actually will say, "You can swallow this. You deserve to taste something that you love." My saviors are baby carrots, hummus, natural peanut butter, baked yams and almond butter sweetened with agave."

OK!: What’s going on in your career?

I have a book coming out next year and a clothing line for women of size – really fashionable and affordable. Wilson Phillips is touring; we’re trying to work on a reunion album for our 20-year reunion in 2010. I’m thrilled!

You look great! How do you feel?
I feel sexier, energetic, youthful, healthier, more agile, more flexible and stronger. I feel so inspired to keep going. I’m in the home stretch!

Has your diet changed since we last saw you in June?

No. I’m not allowing myself anything that’s off my regimen: no sugar, no carbs, no dairy, no red meat, no flour of any kind. It’s really strict, but I like how it feels. I’m eating blueberries, turkey bacon, egg whites and lots of raw vegetable salads. I make my own salad dressing with apple cider vinegar. My only fat is coming from olive oil. No avocado, no roasted nuts — just raw almonds. When I get hungry at night, I take a tablespoon of almond butter and that satisfies my craving. The only sugary thing is berries. When I ate that crap sugar food, I felt like crap. It’s incredible what eating all these vegetables is doing for me.

What’s your motivational strategy?
My new thing is cooking comfort food for others — like bread puddings and banana bread — but not eating it myself. I do a lot of tasting and spitting out!

Have you tried any new workouts?
Yoga. I stay in these poses for three to five minutes at a time. It’s lengthening me, and sweat is coming out everywhere.

Do you still have your trainer?
Oh, yeah! He’s coming three days a week. I’m trying to build up strength in my arms and my core because they are very weak.

What has your husband said about your new look?

He always says, “Keep it up, baby!” He’s very proud. He’s seen me go up and down. He just wants me to be healthy.

Would you consider plastic surgery after you lose the weight?

It’s a possibility. I think I’m going to wind up having my arms done. They’re really saggy.

Have you bought new clothes?
I went to Neiman Marcus and did some good damage last month. I’m trying not to splurge because I’m not at the goal yet.

Tell us about your new clothing line for plus-sized women.
It’s probably the most exciting thing I’m ever going to be involved in. I know what it’s like to be all sizes, and I have some really great things up my sleeve — no pun intended!

What are your baby plans?
We’re going to start trying in October. I’m going to mount my husband! [laughs] I have friends who are pregnant, and I want to be pregnant so badly. Two more months to go — it can’t come soon enough. We want a baby in my tummy right away.

How will that affect your weight loss?
My ob-gyn said when you’re eating this way, you’ll have minimal weight gain. It was very difficult having Lola. I just kept gaining. I’m going to feel better in my next pregnancy. I have this weird feeling I’m going to have twins. My sister just had twins. My grandmother was a twin. It’s a serious possibility!

Carnie Wilson’s Weight Loss Plan

July 9th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Carnie Wilson has endured a lifelong struggle with her weight. After gaining and losing, and then gaining again, the singer is telling OK! how she’s finally not only shed the weight, but how she also plans to lose even more lbs. in her journey down from 208 pounds!

Wilson told OK! that she’s shed another 17 lbs. since her last interview, which appeared in OK!’s June 23 issue. The star–who famously had gastric bypass surgery in 1999 which caused her to shrink from 300 lbs. to 146 lbs.–bravely admitted to OK! months ago that following the birth of her daughter Lola,3, she gained much of the weight back, finally reaching 208 lbs.

Then in June, Carnie told OK! that she had dropped back down to 193 lbs., this time by following a strict diet and excercise program.

And still seems to be working! Today, Carnie tips the scales at a much trimmer 176 pounds and says she is thrilled she lost a lot of the weight while doing her new CMT series, Outsiders’ Inn, a sequel to Gone Country in which Carnie shares a rustic living experience with other stars including Whitney Houston’s ex Bobby Brown, and The Brady Bunch’s Maureen McCormick.

Incredibly, Carnie says she lost weight during the June TV shoot despite the fact that she was constantly cooking for her reality show castmates.

"I lost 11 pounds while we did it," she says. "I would taste and spit [it out]. I cooked really fattening food. I love feeding people."

But while living in the reality house, Carnies emphasized, "I made my tofu, my vegetable. I’m on this wonderful healthy path now."

The singer says she’s come up with a lot of new low calorie recipes. "I’m doing a lot of squash soup and roasted yams with a little splenda, cinnamon, lemon juice and vanilla."

Carnie, who told OK! she wants to lose an additional 35 pounds, added, "I’m feeling so good, very energetic. I want to get pregnant [again]."

In the meantime, Carnie plans to start a clothing line for plus-sized women.

"I have a lot of really great ideas that women are going to be really relieved and happy about, inspired by my experience of being morbidly obese and all sizes," she says. "It’s going to be beautiful."

OK! Interview: Carnie Wilson

June 12th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Carnie Wilson is back on track. Three months after telling OK! she "hit rock bottom" when she tipped the scales at 208 lbs., the singer is now "squashing the fat" with a new workout routine and a healthy diet plan.

Gone are 15 lbs. and there are only 30 more to go before the 40-year-old reaches her goal weight. Then, "I want to get pregnant again," Carnie, who has a daughter, Lola, 3, with husband Rob Bonfiglio, tells OK!. "I’ll be so healthy." And now the former Wilson Phillips member reveals how she’s going to get there!

How has your attitude changed since we saw you in March?
I have a completely different mind set. I mean, I had a good mindset and great intentions back then, but I didn’t know that I had the determination and the willpower to eat the way my body is at its optimum, which means cutting out certain things that I didn’t want to cut out before. I turned 40 and something clicked in my brain. I thought to myself, well, why are you really doing this? Are you doing this for other people—well, sometimes I do because I like to inspire people but what am I really doing it for? I want to feel better. I was feeling very, very sluggish and depressed. I was really down on myself. I started having those feelings like before I had a gastic bypass where I just didn’t have any control over food and it was a frightening place to be and I was really tired of starting and then not following through, starting and not following through.

You were just trying to limit carbs last time. What happened after March?
I started doing yoga. It’s power yoga, a cardio yoga so I get cardio three or four days a week with yoga and then I exercise twice a week with my trainer for forty minute cardio, so I’m getting a lot of cardio so that sets me off to feeling better and then that helps me with food choices but I really am sort of doing a no-dairy, no-carb, no refined sugar at all. I’m on limited amounts of fruits and vegetables.

What’s a sample breakfast, lunch, dinner for you now?
Breakfast is two egg whites and one whole egg, scrambled in canola kitchen spray. I can add seasonings and herbs. And then I have two to three pieces, usually, turkey bacon, well done and then I have half a cup of berries, mixed strawberries and blueberries. Another sample of a breakfast would be, a big half of grapefruit and I sprinkle sweetener on top of the grapefruit and it’s heaven! I’ll have that 30 minutes before I have coffee or my breakfast. Lunch is a salad of chopped kale, romaine and spinach, cucumber, celery, bean sprouts. Then I make a balsamic dressing from scratch. I saute a 3-ounce patty of chicken breast and eat that with the salad. Dinner will be another round of veggies. I’ll steam cauliflower, zucchini and some spinach. I’ll do a piece of protein with that, like 4 ounces of Chilean sea bass.

What’s the hardest part of the diet?
The evening is really hard for me. I have to force myself not to eat. I go back in my head and I see 150 pounds on the scale. So I’ll fill up on tea! I’ll have three cups in one night. I’m trying not to eat after 7:30 p.m.

Are you still working out with Lanre Idewu, your personal trainer?
Yes. Lanre is only twice a week now because I’ve bumped my yoga up to three to four times a week. I try to get six days of cardio; it’s very hard to do that so it averages five days a week. We have bumped up the pace; I’m really breaking sweats. We’re doing fast paced walking, elliptical, lunges and squats and band resistance for my arms, a lot of reps. We do like 150 reps for my arms and it’s a lot. My yoga incorporates everything; I get my heart rate up.

You’ve created some of your own recipes. How did you come up with squash spaghetti?
I was trying to find out what I could do to butternut squash and I saw canned tomatoes and garlic and I thought, "I didn’t like the thought of that," so I thought spaghetti sauce and I remembered sometimes I make bean sprouts with ground turkey and spaghetti sauce and it’s interesting. It has a very distinct flavor; you have to like bean sprouts, which I love. I thought, "Well, if I do bean sprouts with spaghetti sauce, why not butternut squash?" And last week I added mushrooms and onions.

Is your goal still 150?
Between 150 and 160. I’m going to be in a much different physical condition when I get to that weight so I think somewhere around 155, 160, will be perfect. I want to get pregnant again! So we’ll see what happens. I think this is God’s way of having me eat this way so when I do get pregnant, then I won’t be gaining weight and even if I did gain ten pounds, that weight’s going to come off plus more and I’ll be so healthy during this pregnancy and that’s going to be great. I’m going to start trying [to get pregnant] in a few months.

How are you avoiding food pitfalls? Are you keeping bad food out of the house?
I clean my whole entire pantry out and refrigerator and I have a Lola section and my section and I just don’t go in that zone.

Is Lola aware mommy is eating healthy?
Yeah. I’m kind of careful about how I talk to her about stuff like this. What I tell her is, "Vegetables are good for you. We want to be healthy and feel good." Very general. I’m not saying mommy’s on a diet — never. I’m not saying mommy wants to lose weight. I just don’t want to start that yet. I don’t think it’s necessary. I think it’s better to say, "I love these foods because they make me feel good and they’re good for me and they keep me healthy and strong."

How hard is it to juggle what you’re eating and what she’s eating?
I’m not giving in. I used to give in and finish what she had on her plate. If I had nervous energy, I would walk by and pick up anything I saw. If there was food there, I would pick it up and eat it, for, I don’t know what reason! Now, I don’t even think twice. If there’s pasta left on her plate, I will just throw the rest out. I won’t start.

What do you want your fans to know about your weight loss journey?
I want them to know that I’m feeling stronger and more confident and a little more faith with my own willpower, feeling much more in control. Hopefully somebody who was in my spot, where they lost a bunch of weight and gained some back and they felt kind of stuck and scared, sees that I’m doing it and [know] they can do it, too. It’s just you have to work at it.
