Stars Honor Their Moms

May 11th, 2008

Stars are giving thanks to their moms on this Mother’s Day.

“My mom always thought I’d be famous more than I did,” Clay Aiken tells me. “She was always sure that I was going to be famous and be a singer, et cetera, et cetera. I always wanted to be a teacher. She expected this of me before I did. I think she would tell you she’s not surprised, but I’m totally surprised.”

This year, Clay’s mom will be on a cruise, but he typically takes her out to dinner.

“She’s very particular about me buying her too much stuff. She doesn’t really like it too much. She’s a small-town lady.”

On the other hand, Carson Kressley likes to shower his mom with gifts.

“You should always get your mom something she totally doesn’t need because she made so many sacrifices for you,” he says. “I always try to treat her with a little bit of luxury. Maybe it’s amazing flowers or amazing bath stuff from Salno De Bano or even dinner. I might have her over to my house for dinner.”

Helena Christensen sings the praises of her mom, who is from Peru. “She’s the most amazing woman in the world. She’s so giving, caring, funny and crazy in the right way. Her taking care of my son helps me so much.”

What’s so great about Rachel McAdams’s mom?

“She has the best hot red hair. She’s got gorgeous, enviable, beautiful auburn red hair.”

Three Doors Down singer Brad Arnold gives props to his mom.

“My mom used to be a teacher’s aide and teachers aides don’t make that much money,” he tells me. “I’m the youngest of seven kids, and she put up money for a long time to buy me my first set of drums. They weren’t anything extravagant or anything, but I was proud of those things and she was proud for me to have them. Her and my daddy listened to me beat on those things for years and years and years.”

Mya tells me, “The best thing about my mom is how organized she is. I don’t want to limit her to organization, but she’s a fighter. She’s a survivor of breast cancer, so that’s one thing I could never do – give up on anything – through her lesson and her experience with breast cancer. She’s just a great mom.”

Happy Mother’s Day!

Mariska, Hubby Skate With the Stars

April 10th, 2008

Celebs show off their ice-skating talents during Skating With the Stars held at Central Park’s Wollman Rink. (It’s been Trumpified!) Thanks to a silent auction including a week at a house in the Hamptons, the evening raised $275,000 to benefit Figure Skating in Harlem.

Mariska Hargitay and hubby Peter Hermann glide around the ice. He holds onto her hips as they skate to Third Eye Blind’s Never Let You Go.

“Ice skating is the most graceful, beautiful sport,” Real Housewives of New York City star Countess LuAnn De Lesseps tells me. “I love couples — I love pair’s skating. It’s so romantic and sensual.”

Her Real Housewives co-star, Jill Zarin, brings daughter Allison to the rink. The teen is studying at the Sorbonne in Paris this summer. What does Jill love about being a mom?

“I love watching her grow,” she tells me. “I love the pleasure of seeing her fulfill her dreams. I do. As she gets older, more beautiful and more successful, I want to sit back more — it seems ironic because I’m in the limelight now — but I want to put her in the limelight. That’s my job.”

Mariska’s Law and Order: SVU co-star Chris Meloni takes to the ice with daughter Sophia. “I think I can skate,” he jokes. “If I saw a videotape of myself, maybe I’d think otherwise.” What’s the best thing about her pop? “That he loves me,” she responds, hugging him. “There’s a fiver in it if you give them a good answer,” he tells her.

Donald Trump arrives with a p.u.h. — personal umbrella holder — as he’s mobbed by fans. When asked for a photo with an admirer, he poses and says “Go, go, go, go, go.” He chides Law and Order: SVU star Tamara Tunie. “I hate to tell you, but The Apprentice ratings blew you away Tamara, but that’s okay,” The Donald says. “That’s a vicious rumor,” she says.

Carson Kressley
brings his appetite to the charity event. “I’m going to get some steaks!”

What does he love about NYC?

“Just look around,” he says. “We’re skating in this amazing park, and there’s all this great architecture. The people is another. Paris has great architecture, too, but have you been there lately? Not so nice to the Americanos. Also, the shopping. Where do you get Bergdorfs? Nowhere but New York.”

The How to Look Good Naked star sneaks in to pile his plate with chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, pizza, chicken fingers, French fries and brownies.

Back out on the ice, honoree Dorothy Hamill reminisces. “My first competition was here 42 years ago when I was 9 years old,” she says. “Skating builds strength and courage. It’s not necessarily about being a champion.”

Partygoers are treated to gift bags that include Aveeno SPF 55 sunscreen, Cote D’or Experiences Noir Dark Cocoa Chocolate Bar, a fortune cookie from Fortune Girls and an array of beauty products.

Carson’s Makeover Plan for Britney

April 3rd, 2008

In his new show on the Lifetime Channel, How to Look Good Naked, Carson Kressley teaches women how to — well, you know!

Now, the former Queer Eye for the Straight Guy host wants to extend his makeover skills to Britney Spears. "I’d start by getting her some underwear, okay?" he says during the Skating With the Stars, Under the Stars event at NYC’s Wollman Rink. "Then I’d give her a big hug and we’d all go shopping for some sensible clothes. I’d like to see her step it up a notch and wear a little Stella McCartney. It almost looks like she’s wearing Strawberry. It’s crazy, but I do love her."

Kressley adds that he’d also like to make over Brad Pitt. Wait — huh? "Just so I could take off his shirt in the dressing room over and over again," he laughs. Ahh, we get it. And we agree!

If there’s one thing the style maven, 38, isn’t feeling the love for, it’s the leggings trend. "I think leggings are a very particular thing. On some people they look amazing and they’re like voodoo magic. On other people, it’s like, ‘Wow, your legs look gi-normous!’ It’s really personal."

Kressley continues, laughing, "Personally on me, they make my butt look huge unless I do a sensible zebra print. That fools the eye."

Demi Moore Is ‘Flawless’

March 28th, 2008

Personal questions are off-limits during a special screening of Demi Moore’s diamond-heist thriller Flawless presented by The Cinema Society and Piaget.

The event, held at NYC’s Tribeca Grand Screening Room, brings out daughter Tallulah Belle, ex-hubby Bruce Willis, his gal pal Emma Hemming, Carson Kressley, Debbie Harry, Russell Simmons and Pauly Shore.

At 7:17 p.m., a hush rolls over photogs in anticipation of the one, the only Demi. She won’t arrive for some time, but when she blows in, she turns on the charm. “I’m a little — whew!” she says.

In the ‘60s flick set in London, Demi plays a woman constrained by the glass ceiling who teams up with a retiring janitor to steal diamonds from their employer, the London Diamond Corporation.

What does she prefer about that era?

“Well, I was born in the ‘60s,” she tells me.

Who does she consider Flawless?

“As human beings, we tend to have a real drive for perfection,” she says. “It’s really the things that are flawed that we find the most beauty and perfection in. Even in this movie, every character in this is completely flawed, which is what makes it so human.”

In the flick, 45-year-old Demi ages to 80. How did it feel?

“It was strange to see myself, but it didn’t feel like me. I kept looking. Even though I could see my eyes — because they also aged my eyes — it was odd.”

She describes working with Michael Caine, who plays the janitor, as “a dream.” She says, “I love a man who has clear priorities. He knows what he does well, he gets in there, does it and he’s already got the best restaurants chosen to go eat as soon as we wrap.”

The film was shot in Luxembourg. Director Michael Radford tells me, “There are more Michelin guide restaurants in Luxembourg per square foot than anywhere else in the universe because it’s a town of banks and bankers, so they like to eat well. You can always eat well there.”

Since the film is about diamond thieves, what’s the last thing Demi stole?

“When I was 12, I stole a weeble,” she admits.

Likewise, for Russell? “I stole Carmex [lip balm] from my girlfriend this morning,” he laughs.

What does Debbie consider Flawless? The gold bracelet a fashion reporter is sporting.

“Yeah, that’s pretty flawless,” she says, pointing.

Flawless is in theaters now.

Cruising With Carson Kressley

January 4th, 2008

Carson Kressley and I go way back. A bevy of photogs snapped me sitting beside him during a fashion show in 2004, and I see him out all the time. Why, of course, I would cover an event for his new show How To Look Good Naked, which premieres on Lifetime tonight.

Even if it’s outside in Times Square on the coldest day of the year.

After hundreds of women clad in white satin bathrobes descend upon the Square, Carson breaks out the megaphone to rally for the cause. “You don’t have to be a size zero to be beautiful,” he says, before jumping into the waiting black SUV. Brrrr!

Luckily, Carson hooks it up. The heat is a dream-come-true when I hop inside. He playfully tosses a purple bra-on-a-stick at me.

“This is from last night,” he yuks, as we roll off on an adventure.

The 37-year-old reality star confesses that 100% of the Naked ladies were hesitant to strip down.

“The show was this amazing journey where we hear the stories of these women,” he tells me. “It’s not just ‘I don’t like my size’ but it’s ‘I hate my size so much that my life is ruined.’ It’s severe body loathing and body dysmorphia and being obsessed with things you can’t change and they’re not the end of the world. We had this amazing journey during the show where we get past that and we learn to live with that and we learn to dress the woman for her body type. We learn to nourish the body with spa treatments and that ‘you deserve good things. You deserve to be pampered.’”

“By the end of the journey, they’re feeling pretty great about themselves and their self-perception has improved, but when you drop the bomb and say ‘let’s pose nude,’ there’s oftentimes hesitation.”

“What happens is that these women have gone through such a journey where they decide they’re not going to hate themselves anymore that it’s kind of like a coming-out process where they’re just like ‘I’m going to shed all my layers, I’m going to show the world who I am, I’m proud of who I am now, and if they don’t like it – too bad.’ It’s that final nail in the coffin. ‘This is who I am – love me or leave me.’ People go through the experience and they do the nude photo shoot, and they’re amazed. They’re like ‘this is the most liberating thing I’ve ever done.’”

But would Carson go there?

“I would, but probably lots of people would be afraid of that,” he laughs.

TV RECAP: Waking Up with Carson Kressley

November 30th, 2007

After sitting around in my turkey haze all weekend, I needed something to jolt me back into pace. Spending a couple of minutes with Carson Kressley Monday morning did the trick. The Queer Eye for the Straight Guy alum drove an electric sled down the streets of New York City to spread a little holiday cheer for discount retailer T.J. Maxx. “When have you seen a gay guy in a purple sweater driving up Sixth Avenue with Ms. Claus and 100 elves in tow?” Carson declared.

The happy holiday display is to support the store’s “Inner elf” campaign, encouraging those who do it all at the holidays to come in for one-stop-shopping. “This is a great place where that elf can find everything: decorations, great food treats and holiday clothes,” said Carson. “I’ve always been a big fan, picking up a little of this and that.”

Carson will pull double duty on TV over the next few weeks. He’s appearing as a judge on the new CW series Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants, which premieres on the network Dec. 12 at 9 p.m. “It’s the new wave in beauty pageants, mothers and daughter working together. It’s more about their relationship that makes them special,” Carson said. He also teased their will be “a lot of cattiness and bitch slapping, but that’s just me and the other two judges,” he joked.

Carson’s also hosting his own new makeover series, How to Look Good Naked, on Lifetime in January. “The mantra of the show is that women have so many body issues, feeling you’re too tall, too fat, too skinny or have ugly elbows,” said Carson. “The point is to just get over it, focus on the positives and love what you got to work with and make the most of it.” Carson doesn’t just help gals look fabulous, but teaches them to celebrate their bodies with a nude photo shoot. Laughed Carson, “I’ve never gotten so many women naked in my life!”

How to Look Good Naked premieres  Jan. 4 at 9 p.m. on Lifetime.
