How The Stars Are Spending Christmas

December 24th, 2008

Just like families around the globe, the stars have holiday traditions and make every effort to be with their loved ones during this special time of year.

“We have Santa Claus, and Santa Claus, and gifts and more Santa Claus and open fires and a lot of food,” Kate Winslet says. “Nobody gets out of their pajamas for about a week.”

Nicole Kidman is celebrating Sunday Rose’s first Christmas. “We’re having our family come over,” Nicole, who is married to Keith Urban, says. “Lying low. Taking it easy. Lots of food and carols. He plays carols.”

Miley Cyrus hopes to be with boyfriend Justin Gaston. “I love to spend the holidays with all my friends, so that would be nice for us to all have a party,” she says. How will Justin make it special? “Say some prayers and hope she has a good time,” he tells me.

Lavishing six-year-old daughter Sy’rai with gifts is not on Brandy’s agenda. “She’s not going to be spoiled this Christmas because she already has gifts from last Christmas that she has not yet opened. We’re in a recession right now. She’s going to have to chill.”

Maria Menounos will dress up her dogs. “I always dress them up for the holidays,” she says. “They all have their Christmas costumes. I’ve omitted the antlers from my German Shepherd because he took pictures last year and he looked depressed, and my entire family hated me for it. They’re like ‘why did you emasculate him?’”

Ralph Macchio – celebrating on the East Coast — gets two days of Christmas. “We open gifts on Christmas morning, so it’s really old-school. Christmas Eve is at my in-laws, it’s the big Italian fish dinner, and Christmas Day is at my parents with 7,000 grandchildren running around.”

Yonkers Joe star Chazz Palminteri tells me, “Christmas is a holiday I like to have at home. I always have it in my house. I enjoy that. I like having all the family over, and have pasta. My mother-in-law cooks the turkey. I think it’s great. The kids all open up the presents. It’s a great time of the year.”

Lena Olin is trying something new. “We’re going to go to Switzerland – the whole family. We’ll go skiing and have hot chocolate. This is our first year we’re doing that. We always go to Vermont, but this year we want to start a European tradition too.”

Gabrielle Union and Diddy enjoy NYC this time of year. “I love going out to Rockefeller Center and watching people fall on the ice skating rink,” Gabrielle says. Diddy adds, “I keep it shopping at FAO Schwarz.”

Julianne Hough plans to meet up with her famous friends in Tennessee. “There’s a bunch of parties in Nashville, and songwriters will throw parties at their houses and stuff. That’s where I hung out with Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler for the first time last year — at a Christmas party. We’ll probably all bump into each other at some point.”

WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE THE CELEBS THIS CHRISTMAS? Cynthia Nixon is off to California “to get out of the cold weather.” She’ll celebrate with “the usual” traditions. … Wizards of Waverly Place star Jake T. Austin will be in New York play football with his uncle at home. … Ashanti will “probably” see boyfriend Nelly for the holidays. “I’ll be on the beach somewhere,” she tells me. The guys of Lady Antebellum are returning to Georgia while their lead singer Hillary Scott is staying in Tennessee. … Ne-Yo is whooping it up with his sister, mom and grandma in Atlanta. “Last year I ended up having to do a show, and mom’s never going to let me forget that. Mom’s like ‘oh no, no, no,’” he says. “This year was extra important that I got home. It’s going to be our first time spending it in Atlanta, which is our new home.”

Nobody Believes Brad Pitt

December 22nd, 2008

If you picked up the phone and the person on the other end said, "Hi, this is Brad Pitt calling," what would you do?

You probably wouldn’t believe him and would hang up, which is just what a DVD store did in Budapest recently, Page Six reports.

Apparently Brad was seeking the complete works of Hungarian cult director Bela Tarr as a gift for Angelina Jolie, but when he tried calling the store, they kept hanging up on him in  disbelief!

"He tried several times on the phone but had to give up. They just didn’t believe him," an aide to Pitt tells Britain’s Daily Mail.

Angie won’t go presentless, however, as the source says a friend of Brad’s, opera singer Laszlo Domahidy, ended up buying the DVDs for him.

Australian Christmas for Sunday Rose

December 19th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Nicole Kidman is planning a Sydney celebration with hubby Keith Urban, 5-month-old baby Sunday Rose and her children with Tom Cruise, Isabella and Connor.

Sources tell OK! that Nicole asked Tom (they were married from 1990 until 2001), to let her take their kids to her hometown for the holidays.

“Tom and Nicole’s relationship is now cordial enough that [Bella and Connor] can go back and forth more frequently than ever,” a friend of the Cruise family tells OK!.

While Tom and wife Katie Holmes plan to stay in NYC with 2-year-old Suri, Connor and his sister are set to fly to Sydney for Bella’s 16th birthday on Dec. 22.

“Bella is already looking forward to helping her mom prepare a traditional Christmas feast of roast beef with all the trimmings,” says the friend.

Jennifer Aniston Gives Up Spotlight

December 18th, 2008

Jennifer Aniston lets her Marley and Me dog Clyde shine during the Tribeca Cinema Series screening of her comedy held Wednesday at Tribeca Cinemas Gallery in NYC.

While she’s off hitting the talk-show circuit, Clyde is being feted with congratulatory barks when he takes the screen during the V.I.P. (Very Important Pooch) event attended by celebs including Denis Leary and Beth Ostrosky Stern and their dogs. (Abigail Breslin stops by the cocktail party sans pup.)

Clyde’s trainer, Mathilde DeCagny, says working with Jennifer was a dream.

Jen was loving, and very attentive,” she tells me. “She’s such a normal, sweet, fun person. There’s no ego, there’s no complication. All she wants to do is be professional and do it right. I never thought she would be that easy and outgoing. We loved her.”

Other pampered pets – like Denis’ dog Daphne – are pleased to be in the company of the movie star pooch.

“She’s flipped out that we brought her where there are other dogs, because she likes to think of herself as special,” Denis tells me. He’s keeping a tight grip on Daphne thanks to help from wife Ann.

The comedian has no regrets for 2008 – even though he inflamed parents with particularly vile comments he made about autism in his book Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid. “I would’ve voted for Obama about ten more times if I could have,” he tells me. “That’s about it.”

This holiday season the Rescue Me star jokes that he will gift his three dogs with cars and designer clothing in exchange for the affection they give him.

“Dogs love you no matter what you smell like, no matter how tired you are, or where you just came from,” Denis says. “No matter what mood you’re in or what’s going on, they always love you. You can’t pay a human being to do that – maybe for an hour, but not much longer than that.”

Mrs. Stern moves along with bulldog Bianca Romijn-Stamos-O’Connell, who recently came home with a pink toe when she brought her along to a manicure appointment. “Howard wasn’t too happy about that,” Beth says.

What’s her dog’s idea of a perfect night?

“Lying in her bed between Howard and me,” she tells me. “She’s so happy right between the two of us.”

For the holiday season, Beth tells me the best pet gift is “lots of love.”

Certainly Jennifer would agree.

Marley and Me is in theaters December 25.

Looking for a great gift this holiday season? Both Denis Leary and Beth Ostrosky Stern agree that pets make great gifts. Visit your local shelter to give one a home.

Julianne Hough Chows Down

December 16th, 2008

Julianne Hough doesn’t believe in worrying about weight during the holiday season.

“I don’t diet,” the Dancing With The Stars beauty, 20, tells me. “I eat!”

Julianne
will perform tunes from her Christmas album Sounds of the Season: The Julianne Hough Collection on TNT’s Christmas In Washington, which airs Wednesday at 8pm ET.

She has already won the heart of fellow country singer Chuck Wicks. He agrees: She loves to eat.

“When I first met her, we sat down and talked over five different desserts in Las Vegas at the ACM Awards,” Chuck, 29, tells me. “We realized we had so much in common – you could see the sincerity in what she says, and she’s so genuine. She’s so beautiful inside that the outside’s just a bonus.”

Julianne has equal praise for her man.

“We complement each other well, and we really understand each other’s careers and passions,” she tells me. “He’s an amazing guy.”

Tune in Wednesday to catch Julianne – and Darius Rucker – perform.

And, pick up the OK! on stands everywhere Thursday to find out more about Julianne’s love life and how she slims down after eating whatever she wants during the holidays.

Xmas in July for Sheryl Crow

July 7th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

While the rest of us are sweltering in the summer heat (or hiding from it with the help of air conditioning!), rocker Sheryl Crow is busy getting herself in the Yuletide mood, working on her first-ever holiday-themed CD.

"I had been wanting to do this for a while, so when the opportunity came up I just kind of jumped at it," Sheryl explains in an interview with Billboard. "I love Christmas music; every year we have this ritual after the Christmas Eve service, 40 or 50 people come over to the house and we play Christmas music. We pretty much rely on the same Christmas music every year, and every year I’ve said, ‘I’m gonna make some Christmas music of my own.’"

Sheryl describes the album, which will go on sale at Hallmark Gold Crown stores in September, as a "humble record," which will feature some new takes on old classics like "Oh, Holy Night" and "White Christmas."

Additionally, she explains, some of the songs selected are more timely. "We’ve got a lot of young kids who are overseas and away from their families," Sheryl explains. "So we’re doing ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas’ and ‘The Bells of St. Mary,’ because they’re about somebody being away."

And as for recording Christmas music in July? Well, Sheryl says that working in Los Angeles makes it much easier. "It’s never been chilly when I’ve been here, or rainy. It’s mostly been sunny, the Christmas seasons that I’ve been here. That’s just Christmas in L.A."

TUESDAY: SHOPPING

December 24th, 2007

It’s five days before Christmas (or was Tuesday when I wrote this), so seems appropriate to share some tips, trips and secrets I’ve learned about shopping around the holidays.

-When shopping between now and New Year’s you have to mentally prep yourself in advance to face the crowds and the frustration-inducing confusion. I’ve found wearing an ipod calms me when fighting my way through busy shops and makes the long lines seem to go a lot faster.

-If you’re buying something that you’re not sure the recipient will really like because ‘they can always just return or exchange it,’ probably best to just get a gift card. After Christmas sales are great, but when gifts are returned with tags and no receipt, they’ll get the sale price rather than what you paid.

-Can’t stand stores at all? There’s still a few days you can shop online and have your ordered express mailed - or hire a personal shopper! You can probably find one easily enough on the web or craigslist but it’s also a good seasonal job to offer people you know for a bit of extra cash. I did it one season just because I like to shop - whether it’s for me or other people.

-Favorite gift of the week: The universal spa gift certificate! You can get the purchase the cards at places like Walgreens and find out participating spas at spafinder.com

-Buy a case of moderately-priced wine to keep around the house. A $12 bottle of wine is always an appropriate gift to bring to a holiday party at someone’s home and you never know when one may pop up last minute - and when it’s cold outside it’s always nice to have a nice bottle of red to uncork yourself.

-And, finally, keep a few classy candles on-hand for the times you receive an unexpected gift and need to appear to have something to give in return

Michael Lohan To Play The Ultimate Father

December 17th, 2007 / Author: OK! Staff

It appears that Michael Lohan, former convicted felon and father to recently rehabbed actress Lindsay Lohan, is out so show he’s truly overcome his bad-boy ways, as it was announced Monday that he will play the part of Joseph in the Nativity Scene on Tuesday evening in New York City’s famed Times Square.

In recent months, Michael, who claims he found God after his latest stint in jail, has managed to patch up his formerly dicey relationship with his daughter. The two are often spotted together and mention each other frequently when talking about what gave them the strength to turn their lives around.

For those interested in seeing whether LiLo’s pop does right by the role of Joseph, stop by 235 West 48th St. in Manhattan on Tuesday between 5pm and 10pm and take a gander!
