Underdogs Reign Supreme at Grammys

February 9th, 2009

Perhaps the sheer number of collaborative performances at Sunday night’s 51st Annual Grammy Awards should have been a tip-off that good things were in store for Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, as their unlikely pet project, Raising Sand, swept all five categories it was nominated for, including the biggie — Album of the Year.

"I’m bewildered," said Plant, who soared to fame in the late ’60s as the bare-chested, tight-jeaned singer for rock gods Led Zeppelin, and who experienced an unexpected renaissance thanks to his decision to mess around in the studio with beloved bluegrass star Krauss. "In the old days, we would have called this selling out, but I think it’s a good way to spend a Sunday."

Another of the night’s biggest surprises was young British singer Adele winning for Best New Artist. The 20-year-old won out over The Jonas Brothers, whom many had predicted would walk away with the award due to their mammoth popularity.

Going into the evening, many had predicted that Coldplay would be bringing home the most trophies, but of the awards given away during the live broadcast, the band only won in the Best Rock Album category. And while they apologized to Sir Paul McCartney, who was in the audience, for stealing the look of The Beatles‘ Sergeant Pepper’s costumes, no mentions were made — joking or not — of the band’s alleged swiping of a Joe Satriani song.

Another thing not mentioned during the ceremony was the absence of both Chris Brown and Rihanna. As reported earlier, Chris was a little busy being charged with felony assault and posting $50,000 bail for an alleged incident with an unidentified female on Saturday night. Though the LAPD will not confirm Brown’s girlfriend Rihanna is the woman involved, all current signs point to that being the case.

Coldplay: We’re Not Plagiarists!

December 9th, 2008

In a rare move for them, Coldplay has responded to media reports claiming their hit song "Viva la Vida" includes "Substantial original portions" of virtuoso guitarist Joe Satriani’s 2004 song "If I Could Fly."

Satriani filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in L.A. last week, claiming Coldplay plagiarized his song. The 52-year-old guitarist is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" attributable to the alleged copyright infringement.

But on Tuesday, Coldplay fired back, taking to their website to write the following response to Satriani’s claims:

"If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him," the band says. "Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write or have any influence on the song ‘Viva La Vida.’ We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well in his future endeavors."

Satriani sued Coldplay one day after the band received seven Grammy nominations. Among the mentions were nominations in the categories of record and song of the year for "Viva La Vida," which comes from the band’s chart-topping album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends.

Gwyneth Gets Emotional at Coldplay Concert

July 3rd, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

After nearly five years of marriage, Chris Martin can still bring Gwyneth Paltrow to tears — which is exactly what he did at Coldplay’s recent concert in New York City.

As his biggest fan, the 35-year-old actress was front and center for the band’s concert and enjoying every minute of it.

"Gwyneth was whispering and clapping throughout the show," an eyewitness tells OK!.

But when Chris, 31, launched into "Fix You," the song he wrote for Gwyneth after her father Bruce’s death in 2002, "she broke down in tears."

The tears didn’t go unnoticed. After the show, Chris, 31, made sure to comfort his wife.

"He noticed she had been crying," the source says. "He kissed her and made her laugh by pointing out all the things he’d screw up in the show."

Chris Martin Walks Out Of Interview

June 13th, 2008

Sometimes it seems that Chris Martin isn’t really cut out for being a rock star.

The Coldplay singer, who is supposed to be promoting his new album, walked out of a radio interview — because someone dared to ask him about his new album!

Things got off to a bad start in the chat with a high-brow BBC arts show when Chris, 31, accused the presenter of "journalistically twisting" him into saying the album was all about death.

Then, eight minutes in, the interviewer asked the star where he got the idea for the revolutionary theme for Viva La Vida, which was released yesterday.

The bad tempered frontman went silent, then said, "I’m not really enjoying this," and walked out, explaining that he doesn’t "really like having to talk about things," leaving drummer Will Campion to take over.

After taking a few minutes to regain his composure, Gywneth Paltrow’s hubby came back into the studio and rejoined the discussion.

But when the interviewer tried another question about his music, the multi-millionaire would only sulkily reply, "Um… yes… yes, yes … exactly."

The pre-recorded interview was broadcast this morning on BBC Radio 4.
