Danny Gokey Chats It Up With OK!
May 29th, 2009
While the country welcomed American Idol’s third place finisher Danny Gokey into their living rooms and lives, here at OK! magazine we were lucky to welcome the Milwaukee native into our very own offices, complete with – you guessed it! – cupcakes from Sprinkles.
During Danny’s visit, where he enjoyed the delicious treats and posed for pictures with his faithful fans here, he dished about how his life has changed since Idol, his personal music idol, the loss of his beloved wife, Sophia, and the foundation he dedicated to her memory.
Congrats. You made it into the top three, the three musketeers.
Three amigos. Three stooges.
How’s that been?
It’s been a great privilege to make it that far on the show, at least that’s what I thought. I think a lot of people would agree with that. Just the accomplishment to go from 103,000 to top three.
In your wildest dreams did you think you’d end up being in the Top 3?
I don’t think any of us thought that it would come down to this. You’re one amongst so many. What’s going to separate you? What’s going to make you stand apart from everybody else? Yeah, I can sing, but so can everyone else, well not everyone else, but a lot of people can sing who come to the auditions. And somebody has to grip them. My goal was just to make it to Hollywood, and I made it much, much further than Hollywood.
PICS FROM DANNY’S VISIT TO OK!:
Were your friends and family a little surprised when you made it that far?
No, I don’t think they were because they were the ones who told me to try out. And I was always the one who said, "No. No, no, no."
How many seasons did they ask you to audition?
Many seasons, I probably think since the show began they told me. Basically, it was the last year that I could do it [because of the age limit], so and I watched it last year and that kind of got me to do it.
It’s nice you swooped in right under.
Yeah, ain’t that the truth? I came in at the perfect time. I mean, yeah, it was quite the road to walk here, but I made it and I’m very proud of my accomplishment.
What’s been the song that’s kind of been your anthem?
“What Hurts The Most,” I think. I like that song a lot. And like “P.Y.T.” I love that song, too. They’re songs that I think could define me when I’m singing, you know on an album.
Seeing yourself grow from an artist from the beginning of the show to now, how do you think you have grown and changed?
I think in a lot of areas. I think in presentation, in cleaning up my vocals, in dealing with the public. There are so many areas, but the thing is I feel like I’m just in the infant stages, there is a lot more growing to do. So, I just take it as it comes.
Is there an artist that you kind of want your career to be similar to?
Well, one thing I can say is that I like Brian McKnight because has longevity in his career. I like his songwriting because it has a way of reaching the heart. I like Lauryn Hill, also because she has a very powerful message when she sings. Those kind of things stick out to me.
Getting to perform with Lionel Richie, tell me a little bit about that!
That was my highlight of my journey on American Idol.
Really?
Absolutely. That was the best moment I had on American Idol. I think that ending on that note made me a very happy camper.
Everyone got to pair up with their idols.
He is an amazing guy. It was such an opportunity, and not only that, but it was an honor to work with him. He was outstanding. I can’t say enough about this guy.
He is a musical legend.
He came across as the most humble, because I was sort of nervous to sing with him because it’s his music. At one point, I was trying to control myself and sing more low-key and I said, “Please just tell me can I put my own twist on it? I don’t want to disrespect you as an artist. I want to honor your request.” And he said, “you do whatever you want to do.” He said, “I’m gonna sing it like this, how I do it on my albums. I want you to take any freedom you want and just go in and out. Weave in and out around me. Just do what you want to do.”
Any other big mentors, like Simon Cowell? I know Paula was one of your biggest fans.
Love Paula. I love Paula. I love her even more now being on the show. You know, Paula looks at music from the heart. And Simon balances her out because he looks at music on an intellectual level. He analyzes it here, while she takes it here and responds from here. Randy and Kara, they’ve been in the industry long enough to have, they have very balanced opinions, too.
Any crazy fan stories?
There’s a lot of crazy things, but I think that it’s just come in and come out at the same time. I can’t think of one thing. You know on the show, the hometown one, [fans were] just running and screaming, crazy behind my limo, then finally just giving up and throwing everything on the ground.
Are you going to stay living in Milwaukee or do you think you’ll move to Hollywood, New York?
I’m going to stay in Milwaukee because of the foundation. I’m probably not going to live there full time. I think, what I see in the future, I see myself going between Los Angeles, Nashville, and Milwaukee, a lot. Between those cities.
What’s the first thing that now that the show is done that you can’t wait to do, besides sleep?
Oh my goodness. Work on my foundation, seriously, that was the one thing that I wanted to get on so deeply.
How did your foundation, Sophia’s Heart, start?
The history of it is that when my wife passed away, it was obviously completely unexpected. Just nine months previous to that, we were getting benefits through me, and we ended up switching over and got benefits through her and little did I know when she passed was that she had an insurance policy on her life.
And, you know, when I got that check in the mail, I was like what do I do with this. It’s personal, I was kind of offended, not that they meant to do this, they were trying to help out, but they put a dollar amount on my wife. I said, "This has no value compared to her." And what could I do? How could I spend that money? Would you buy a car? Heck no. But what can you buy? Nothing. So, that’s when the idea came up for the foundation, and I said I’m going to start a foundation.
I used that money, a majority of that money, probably about 75-80 percent of that money [for the foundation]. Because I didn’t have a job, so I had to live off some of it, too. That’s where it started. Now it’s become her living legacy on the earth. And you know, my music is my message and the foundation is the action behind the message. And I just want to reach a lot of kids, lot of youth, lot of families with this foundation because that’s what she would have done. So, to me, it’s very precious to me. I want my music and my foundation to be a marriage. I don’t want them to ever be separate. Every tour, every thing I go on I want to talk about, I want to have video clips, I want to have everything.
Have you written songs for her?
I’ve come up with ideas for that, but I haven’t. For me, I want to write a song, eventually, regarding that because it’s a very, very still a wound, an open wound that hasn’t, you know…
Healed.
Not at all, but I took the right steps, I believe to get the healing. You know, going on a show. You know, I can only imagine what life would had been like if I didn’t have something like this to distract me, something like this to give me hope. You know, this is a huge hope show for me.
Being on the show who did you rely on, since you had to kind of reconfigure that?
In the beginning, it was Jamar, man. Jamar was very instrumental. When we went to Hollywood week together that was what, November? It was only a couple months after my wife passed, what was it four months? July to November, August, September. It was only four months after doing that, that rigorous schedule. And I would pour my heart out to him and he would be there and we’d just talk through things. And then I met Michael Sarver and he was a great guy to talk to him, man. That guy was great, and he was the one I really relied on. Up to that, it was just casual friendships.
Do you still talk to all the Idols now?
No, I mean, it’s funny, I don’t, but we get together and we pick right up. It’s funny, when I was on American Idol I barely even called my family. Yeah, I’m just a person, when I’m doing something, I’m doing it. And I don’t really focus on anything behind it, but now I’m focused on this and when I get back from the tour, it’s gonna be like we talked the whole time without ever taking a break.
The glasses. We read something about you, that you have something like 200 pairs.
No, are you kidding me?
How many pairs?
Who said that?
It was on one of the blogs.
Wow, no, a little over 50. I might have 60. I just lost, misplaced nine pairs of glasses.
So someone should sponsor you and just get you your supply.
No, I think I’m gonna come up with a line of glasses, that’s what I want to do. I want to come up with my own line of glasses.
That sounds like a plan, Danny.
I’m really excited to do that. Some of those proceeds can help out the foundation. What I heard is that people got into glasses again. Not that they weren’t, but I heard that kids started to like their glasses. Even the guys at the Sirius radio station, was like man I wear contacts but you got me wanting to wear glasses again.

Kris Allen “Shocked” by His Own Idol Victory
May 21st, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff
When Kris Allen was announced as the winner on Wednesday night’s American Idol finale, it wasn’t just the odds-makers around the world who were stunned that the cute kid from Arkansas had upset the overwhelming frontrunner Adam Lambert.
"I’m shocked… really shocked," a still-stunned Kris said backstage afterward. "I felt shocked almost every week that I made it, and to be the American Idol, I’m completely shocked."
In fact, the 23-year-old was so surprised by his own victory that he quietly declared "Adam deserves this" during the final moments of the Fox live broadcast.
"I feel like he deserves this just as much as I do," Kris explained. "He’s an amazing performer, gifted guy and really just an amazing guy. It was fun doing this with him. It really was."
When Kris got the chance to celebrate his win with his wife of almost eight months, Katy, their joy was beyond words. "We actually didn’t say anything," he revealed. "We were just hugging each other and we’re just like, uh, we can be married. We haven’t been able to be married for the past nine months… She’s amazing. She’s the coolest chick in the world."
MORE PICS FROM THE IDOL FINALE!

As for what he hopes to do musically with his first post-Idol album, Kris said, "I think it’s pretty obvious that I’ve done a lot of the singer-songwriter pop-rock kind of thing and that’s something I want to do."
Kris, who says he’s been dreaming of a moment like this since he first picked up a guitar at the age of 13, had a message for his young fans: "Don’t have any regrets in life. If you want to do something, go after it," he said. "And if you fail a little bit, just keep going because something can happen with it."

Adam Lambert Not Shaken by Loss
May 21st, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff
Considering that he’d been touted as the greatest natural performer to ever grace the American Idol stage in his season-long run to the finals, you couldn’t really fault surprise runner-up Adam Lambert if he’d been a little displeased with his second-place finish to Kris Allen.
But speaking to OK! after Wednesday’s exhilirating results extravaganza, Adam seemed not just okay with having lost out to Kris — he seemed downright happy.
"I felt so good. I got to sing with Queen and KISS!" the San Diego native said, looking at all the positives of the night. "First or second, it doesn’t matter to me; I got to sing with two great heroic rock bands."
According to Adam, he wasn’t as surprised by the results as most of the audience was. "I knew it was going to be a close race," he admitted. "I think Kris is incredibly talented and he’s a good person, so to me it was like, we know it’s going to be close; whatever happens, happens. We’ve made it this far, got to do a really cool finale and we’re both going to get to do great things now in the future.
"For me, it’s not really about what happens tonight," added the rocker. "It’s about tomorrow. It’s about next."
And, says Adam, tomorrow can’t come fast enough. "I know that we’re going to start working on some music right away, and that’s what I can’t wait to do — to collaborate, to write, to co-write and create visuals that go along with the music, too," he explained. "I think that’s going to be really exciting."
MORE PICS FROM THE IDOL FINALE!

As the first openly gay Idol contestant to make it to the finale, Adam’s personal life had become the stuff of Internet rumor in recent weeks as stories circulated saying that conservative Christians would turn out in droves to vote for Kris — not because he’s the better performer, but merely because he’s a Christian. And though Wednesday night’s results opened the door for Adam to theorize that theology might have gotten in his way of winning, he was the first one to shrug off those thoughts.
"The blogs have a lot of opinions, don’t they?" he joked. "I think Kris won because he’s a great artist and I was happy to be runner-up to that."
Adam says his focus is squarely on making the most of the opportunities being on Idol has provided him.
"My dream now is to make a really dope record, to do something new, to push the boundaries a little bit, push people’s buttons, open people’s minds up a little bit," he said. "You know what was really cool about Kris being in the finals tonight is: We are seemingly so different but we found a way to get along and find a common bond, mostly through music but also just through talking and getting to know each other.
"And if there’s anything that could come from this experience that I hope all the fans can pick up is that even if you’re really different, there’s a way to get along with each other, and it’s not about, oh, you beat me because of this or you’re different. It’s about finding the common stuff that makes it work."

Kris Allen is the New American Idol!
May 20th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff
Since the very beginning of the American Idol semifinals this season, all the oddsmakers were putting the sure money on Adam Lambert to walk away victorious in the end. With his polished stage presence, a vocal range that was — shall we say expansive? — and a theatricality that had audiences in the theater and at home howling for more, the San Diego native was definitely the one to beat.
But apparently no one told that to the fans of fellow finalist, Kris Allen, who managed to hone his aww-shucks just-another-guy persona into a stage persona that grew each week in confidence and popularity. He shocked the world last week when he beat out Danny Gokey for the spot next to Adam in the finals. But could he do it again in the finale with everything on the line?
The answer: Yes he could.
In what has to be the biggest upset in eight seasons of the hit Fox show, Kris was named the American Idol champ on Wednesday night, earning the majority of the almost 100 millions votes.
"I don’t even know what to feel right now," a stunned Kris said after hearing the news from host Ryan Seacrest. "Thank you so much."
MORE PICS FROM THE IDOL FINALE!

But before the results were announced, Adam and Kris had to wait for over two hours, through seemingly countless duets, group songs, and medleys featuring appearances from Cyndi Lauper, KISS (in full makeup), Fergie and The Black Eyed Peas, Lionel Richie, David Cook, Carlos Santana, Keith Urban, Rod Stewart, Jason Mraz, Queen Latifah, Queen, Steve Martin and all 13 Idol finalists.
Aside from the results, the night’s most surprising moment came when judge Kara DioGuardi jumped on stage to join former contestant Katrina Darrell — you know, the girl who auditioned in a bikini (and who appeared to have enhanced her… assets… in the months since first appearing on the show). At the end of their duet — more like a duel, actually — Kara ripped open her outfit to bare her own super-fit physique in nothing but a black bikini!

American Idolatry: The Final Face-Off
May 20th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff
Crowds filled L.A. Live’s Nokia Theater on Tuesday for the final night of competition on Season 8 of American Idol, and oh, what a show it was!
This season’s final two, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, couldn’t be more different when it comes to everything from their fashion sense to their taste in music, making this season finale one of the most anticipated and hotly debated in Idol history.??
Along with previous Idol competitors David Archuleta and Carly Smithson in the audience, there was a higher than usual celebrity turnout, including Katie Holmes and her adorable daughter Suri Cruise, who kept her mom’s hands tightly over her ears during the show. Also on hand were Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins and his wife.
And if ever there was doubt about the close-knit Idol clan this season, tonight put it all to rest as eliminated contestants Danny Gokey, Alison Iraheta, Matt Giraud, Scott MacIntyre, Megan Joy, and the rest of the 13 finalists returned to lend their support.??
The allegiances of the crowd were equally split between the two remaining singers, with yellow “Kris” signs peppered throughout the screaming Adam fans in the audience.
As for the singing, the finalists were each tasked with performing three songs — their personal favorite song from the season; show creator Simon Fuller’s choice of song; and an original single co-written by new judge Kara DioGuardi.
??Both finalists bolted out of the starting gate strong. Adam performed a haunting version of “Mad World,” complete with dry-ice fog and a long black trench coat, all of which Simon Cowell called “a little too Phantom of the Opera for me.” ??Kris chose “Ain’t No Sunshine,” which he performed at the piano and impressed Simon so much that he agreed, “Kris, you’ve won round one.”
??But soon began to look like Adam’s night with his second song of the night, Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come.” ??Following the performance, Simon told him, “you’re 100 percent back in the game,” and Paula said, “you’re going to be iconic someday, you’re the best I’ve ever heard.”??
Hard words to follow for Kris, who gave an — according to Simon — “too laid back" version of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?”
??Both competitors had a go at the third song, “No Boundaries,” though its slick, radio-ready tune didn’t seem to fit either Adam’s theatrics or Kris’s smoldering intensity.
At the end of the evening, the audience was treated to a live performance from Carrie Underwood, who sang her version of Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home” as a video montage played showing all the Idol finalists from this season on their journey to be in the final two.

Kris & Adam: Vote Should Be about Talent, Not Religion
May 19th, 2009
As far as singers go, there couldn’t be two more different competitors this season than Kris Allen—the laid-back, aww-shucks cutie pie from Arkansas—and the over-the-top and flamboyantly theatric Adam Lambert.
And in the week since it was decided that these two would square off in Tuesday night’s American Idol finale, a lot of online chatter has been about how Adam will win because he’s the first openly gay finalist or about how Kris will win because of the support he’s receiving from his Christian fan base.
But on Monday night, both Adam and Kris made it clear that fans should pick this season’s Idol champ not based on religion or sexual preference but — shockingly — on who they think is the better singer.
"I hope having the Christian vote doesn’t have anything to do with who wins," Kris explained at a press conference on Monday. "I hope it has to do with talent and the performance that you give and your package, and it’s not about religion."
Not surprisingly, ?Adam agreed. "This is a talent competition, not a church thing," said the San Diego-based rocker. "I would hope people vote based on what they like to hear… not what religious background you are or what color you are or what gender… It doesn’t really have anything to do with that. It’s about music."
Rather than focus on their differences, the pair talked openly about their shared love of performing. "I think we both love music, we share that," said Adam. "We get along really well; we were roommates early on in the competition."
Added Kris, "We both have a passion for this; we’ve both wanted to do this for a long time."
Adam did take a second to play down reports that his background as a professional musical theater actor has given him an unfair advantage this season. "This isn’t theater," he explained. "So I don’t really see how it affects it at all. Obviously I’ve had experience on the stage performing, but so has Kris, just in different venues. Kris has worked clubs and with a band. And I’ve worked in theater. We both have experience."
Joked Chris, "I’ve had just as much experience, just, you know… I wasn’t in Wicked!"
Tune in tonight to see these two very different — but apparently very similar performers— compete in the American Idol finale!
