Howie Mandel Opens Up About Health Scare

January 15th, 2009

Howie Mandel is speaking up about his recent health scare and putting to rest rumors that he suffered a heart attack.

In an interview with Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush on his nationally syndicated radio show The Billy Bush Show, the Deal or No Deal host says he’s doing just fine.

"The doctors say my heart is strong and I did not have an attack," Mandel says. Howie was filming NBC’s Howie Do It in Toronto on when he says he had a random checkup for insurance purposes. An EKG showed he had an irregular heartbeat but the doctor told him the problem could be corrected to get his heart back to a regular rhythm.

"They put you totally out and they take those defibrillators and they yell ‘Clear!’" Howie explained. "They shock you and your heart goes back to a normal rhythm."

It was after the procedure on Monday night when Howie, who was advised not to eat before the procedure, says he "got dizzy at the elevator and I must have passed out because I woke up in a gurney in an ambulance on the way back to the hospital."

Mandel, who says doctors told him his heart was fine, was kept overnight at the hospital for observation. Of the whole experience, he says, "I was terrified because I try to stay healthy, work out, I eat well and to be in a public lobby of a hotel and start to feel dizzy and then have no memory after that and to wake up in an ambulance is terrifying."

Howie Mandel Speaks Out On ADHD

October 14th, 2008

Howie Mandel is speaking out about his battle with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

“Anybody can get it, and it is not something that afflicts only kids,” the Deal or No Deal host tells OK! about his new public service announcement for the Adult ADHD Is Real campaign.

“I personally wasn’t diagnosed until I was an adult," says Howie.

"I’d had issues through my whole life that kind of complicated my life and made things a lot harder,” Howie, 52, who also has a horror of germs thanks to obsessive compulsive disorder, says.

“But with diagnosis, you can learn coping skills, and there are treatments that can make your life a whole lot easier.”

The veteran stand-up and St Elsewhere star reportedly won’t shake hands with people unless they are wearing a latex gloves — which he used to use a lot as props in his early stand-up.

Apparently, even his trademark bald head is related to his ‘germ phobia’. He once told Howard Stern on the radio that he shaves his head because he feels that hair is unhygenic.

Piven Not Amused by Emmy Hosts

September 22nd, 2008

Going into Sunday night’s Emmy broadcast, many TV insiders wondered whether the decision to toss aside the ceremony’s usual single-host format in favor of multiple hosts — specifically the five nominees in the Outstanding Reality Show Host category — would work. Well, it didn’t — at least according to Jeremy Piven.

The Entourage star, who won the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy award for the third time on Sunday, was the evening’s first honoree and had the dubious honor of following only minutes after the five hosts — American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest, Project Runway’s Heidi Klum, Dancing With the StarsTom Bergeron, Survivor’s Jeff Probst and Deal or No Deal’s Howie Mandel — rambled on about "having nothing" on the teleprompters, causing more than a bit of uncomfortable shuffling in the audience.

Backstage, Jeremy let his distaste for the opening segment be known to reporters. "It was a celebration of nothing," the outspoken actor announced. "I was confused."

And it looks like he wasn’t the only one. Later in the evening, Jeff Probst himself, who ultimately beat out his fellow finalists for the Reality Show Host title, admitted he didn’t know how the show came off and plans to watch it again at home.

"According to Piven, it didn’t [work]," Probst shrugged, admitting that having five hosts for the Emmys was a hard task because they all couldn’t agree on the jokes.

OK!’s 2008 Emmy Picks

September 18th, 2008

The 60th Annual Primetime Emmy awards are live on Sunday, Sept. 21 on ABC and the stars are surely getting ready and gearing up for the big event. Don’t know who to cheer for? Check out OK!’s picks to win, as well as TV Guide channel red carpet correspondent Lisa Rinna’s predictions for a few of the coveted awards.

REALITY-COMPETITION PROGRAM
Nominees: The Amazing Race, American Idol, Dancing With the Stars, Project Runway, Top Chef
Should win: The Amazing Race
Will win: The Amazing Race

The Amazing Race always wins this award, it seems, because frankly put, it’s well done, exciting, and instead of being filmed in a studio, it takes place all over the globe. We wouldn’t be surprised to see it nab the Emmy for the sixth year in a row.

HOST (REALITY PROGRAM)
Nominees: Tom Bergeron (Dancing With the Stars), Heidi Klum (Project Runway), Howie Mandel (Deal or No Deal), Jeff Probst (Survivor), Ryan Seacrest (American Idol)
Should win: Tom Bergeron
Will win: Tom Bergeron

Due to Ryan Seacrest overkill, we think the Emmy will go to Tom Bergeron, who acts fast on his feet during the live broadcast of DWTS and manages to be cheesy and endearing at the same time.

SUPPORTING ACTOR (COMEDY)
Nominees: Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men), Kevin Dillon (Entourage), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Rainn Wilson (The Office).
Should win: Neil Patrick Harris
Will win: Neil Patrick Harris

Besides the fact that NPH does a stellar job on HIMYM, he’s been highly visible this year, acting in Old Spice commercials and "Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog."

SUPPORTING ACTRESS (COMEDY)
Nominees: Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies), Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live), Jean Smart (Samantha Who?), Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men), Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty)
Should win: Amy Poehler
Will win: Vanessa Williams

While we’d love to see Amy pick this one up (as the first to be nominated in this category in 30 years, fans love Vanessa as evil Wilhelmina Slater, and it could be her turn for an Emmy.

SUPPORTING ACTOR (DRAMA)
Nominees: Ted Danson (Damages), Michael Emerson (Lost), Zeljko Ivanek (Damages), William Shatner (Boston Legal), John Slattery (Mad Men)
Should win: Ted Danson or John Slattery
Will win: William Shatner

Ted’s a TV institution, and John is a show-stealer on Mad Men, but for some reason we can’t quite put our finger on, it feels like this one will go to William’s work as inappropriate lawyer Denny on Boston Legal.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS (DRAMA)
Nominees: Candice Bergen (Boston Legal), Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters), Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy), Dianne Wiest (In Treatment), Chandra Wilson (Grey’s Anatomy)
Should win: Dianne Wiest
Will win: Candice Bergen

Backlash after Katherine Heigl’s antics this year has taken the shine off Grey’s Anatomy, so Sandra and Chandra are out. Dianne Wiest already has an Oscar and is brilliant as Gabriel Byrne’s therapist on In Treatment, but our guess is Candice’s TV past will get her the Emmy this year to add to the five she has at home for Murphy Brown.

OUTSTANDING ACTOR (COMEDY)

Nominees: Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Steve Carell (The Office), Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies), Tony Shalhoub (Monk), Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men).
Should win: Alec Baldwin
Will win: Tony Shalhoub

While we feel Alec Baldwin was shafted last year due to bad press surrounding those voicemails he left for his daughter and has recovered nicely in the public eye, Tony Shalhoub has won six awards for his quirky role on Monk, the last in 2005, and who are we to mess with a record like that?

Lisa’s pick: Steve Carell
“I think he is so funny and talented and it is his turn to win. And he is always the best dressed!” she says of The Office actor.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS (COMEDY)
Nominees: Christina Applegate (Samantha Who), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Tina Fey (30 Rock), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine)
Should win: Tina Fey
Will win: Tina Fey

Tina Fey is on a roll this year, having won the Golden Globe already in this category. Plus, she’s just brilliantly hilarious at all times and we can’t imagine her not winning this.

Lisa’s pick: Tina Fey
“She is a comic genius and it’s her year, I’m guessing. She is groovy cool and I always love her designer choices she makes on the red carpet!”

OUTSTANDING ACTOR (DRAMA)
Nominees: Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Hugh Laurie (House), James Spader (Boston Legal)
Should win: Jon Hamm
Will win: Jon Hamm

Having won the Golden Globe for his role as ad exec Don Draper on Mad Men, we wouldn’t be surprised if Jon carries away an Emmy as well this year. Even if you haven’t seen the show, believe us, he is just that good.

Lisa’s pick: Jon Hamm.
“Just awesome, and so new and fresh," she gushes. "I can’t wait to meet him, I’m a big fan. And he’s hot!”

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS (DRAMA)
Nominees: Glenn Close (Damages), Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters), Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU), Holly Hunter (Saving Grace), Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)
Should win: Glenn Close
Will win: Kyra Sedgwick

Glenn deserves an Emmy for her hard-hitting role on Damages, but we think Kyra’s body of work on The Closer is such a wide critical success and favorite with fans that she’ll squeak out a win over Glenn and last year’s winner, Sally Field.

Lisa’s pick: Sally Field
“What a competitive field, all are so amazing. I think Sally’s work was phenomenal this season, as it always is and it just may be her time!" she says. " She wore a gorgeous Valentino last year and I look forward to seeing what designer she chooses this year!”

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES
Nominees: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, The Office, 30 Rock, Two and a Half Men.
Should win: 30 Rock or The Office
Will win: 30 Rock

While both NBC shows are fan favorites, this is Tina Fey’s year and we think she’ll bring her show with her to the podium again for best comedy series over the popular Entourage, especially since Adrian and the boys were off TV for a year.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
Nominees: Boston Legal, Damages, Dexter, House, Lost, Mad Men.
Should win: Mad Men
Will win: Mad Men

Although it’s currently only in its second season now, Mad Men has already scored 16 Golden Globe wins this year. So why not bag up the Emmy to go, too? Besides the winning streak, the highly-stylized retro show has garnered a lot of buzz, even among those who don’t watch it.

Watch Lisa and her co-host Joey Fatone work the red carpet on Live at the Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 21  at 6 p.m. on the TV Guide Channel.

OK! Interview: Deal or No Deal’s Anya Monzikova

January 3rd, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

OK! continues its ongoing series of interviews with the lovely ladies of the hit NBC show Deal or No Deal with the gorgeous #10 herself, Anya Monzikova, who tells OK! all about the long and bumpy road from the steps of Russia to the stairs of Deal or No Deal.

"When I was 7-and-a-half, my mother and I moved from Russia to Florida," the 23-year-old beauty recalls. "I didn’t speak any English, so it was kind of like being thrown right into it. I was put into an ESL program at school and I got so freaked out because I couldn’t understand what anyone was saying and I started crying. They sent me to the principal’s office and I went home and didn’t return to school for six months."

However, this time away from school actually worked to Anya’s benefit, she explains: "I just stayed home watching TV and learning English by watching Sesame Street!"

Following high school, the 5′9" stunner did what every hopeful model and actress who dreams of Hollywood stardom does. "I packed my car to the top with everything I owned — you couldn’t see out of any of the windows! — and drove across country."

But unlike many who arrive in Tinseltown with nothing but hopes and dream, Anya actually had a solid gig lined up — or at least she thought she did. "I came out here to work on a pilot for a TV show," she explains to OK!. "It was kind of like Trading Spaces where we’d teach kids to make eco-friendly homes." But Anya quickly learned the harsh realities of life as a TV personality. "We worked on the pilot for six months, and then everything just fell through," she tells OK!. "I got kicked out of the house, literally. Everything was just gone within a second. I was left without a house and had to just kind of start from scratch."

The hardship wasn’t enough to discourage Anya from realizing her dream. "I started going to school, doing some theater in college, taking some film production classes," she explains. "And really just hitting the pavement and going to auditions, trying to get a job." And after a few years of looking for a break, along comes Howie Mandel. "Finally Deal or No Deal happened and my career’s just started taking off — it’s a blessing, really."

And now Anya, who admits that her jarring experiences during her early days in Hollywood has her keeping a keen eye on her finances, has her mind set on long-term goals. "Acting and working in the entertainment field is something I’ve just always known I wanted to do," Anya, who tells OK! she’d love to work with Woody Allen, recalls. "Whether I would be directing, producing, acting, or modeling — Hollywood’s a great town and there are so many opportunities. I just love making films and getting into a great character. I love what I do and definitely see myself doing this for quite a long time."

When it comes to talking about behind-the-scenes secrets of the show, Anya, who some the other girls have nicknamed the "Crazy Russian" says she can’t reveal the identity of the mysterious banker, but she does tell OK! that the man in the booth has his own secret entrance and that he is definitely talking to Howie on the phone during the show. " Everyone thinks there’s no one on the other line and Howie’s just making stuff up, that he’s pretending," she says. "But he’s actually there."

She also says she and some of the other girls, who have no idea which case holds the $1,000,000, have tried different methods of figuring out who’s holding those big amounts. "Sometimes I pick up the case and it feels heavier so I think, ‘I have a high amount this time, I know it!’" So does that ever work? "No… It’s really that I’m just weaker than I was the day before!"

For more of Anya, check out her Web site anyamonzikova.net and check out Deal or No Deal tonight at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

OK! Interview: Deal or No Deal’s Marisa Petroro

January 2nd, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

In the decade since moving from her native New Jersey to Hollywood, Deal or No Deal’s Marisa Petroro (a.k.a. #18) has had her fair share of Tinseltown success, with, among many others, roles opposite Christina Ricci in Pumpkin and in Tomcats with Jerry O’Connell and Jaime Pressley. But for all the hard work she’s put into making a name for herself as a model and actress, Marisa literally stepped right into her highest-profile gig so far.

"I had to walk down a set of stairs, holding a briefcase, and that was it," she remembers. "I didn’t fall, so I got the job."

However, her luck wouldn’t last forever when it came to the treacherous pyramid of stairs Marisa and her 25 fellow models must scale and descend in sky-high heels. "I was actually the second one to fall ever," the beauty confesses to OK!. "It was just a little embarrassing." Lucky for her, Marisa’s stumble wasn’t infamous enough to make the for-cast-and-crew-only blooper reel the editors put together at the end of each season. "They showed everyone who’s fallen at our wrap party," she recalls. "But not me. I guess I fell so gracefully that no one really noticed!"

In fact, Marisa has become such an expert on those stairs that she occasionally has to give up her usual #18 case to help out a new girl. "I’ll move to a different number if someone’s on vacation," she explains to OK!. "I’ll move to #5 because you have to walk down more stairs. So they’ll take a veteran, put her at five and have the newbie at a higher number."

Regardless of the number of steps she has to climb, Marisa confesses that she relishes those times when she gets picked early in a game and gets to kick off those heels to watch the proceedings backstage. "That’s a blessing!" she admits to OK!.

Of course, when 5′5" Marisa sheds her heels, the height difference between her and most of the other DOND models — who start on average at 5′7" — becomes readily apparent. "I’m glad I got in at the beginning," she reveals to OK!, "because I think if I came in now, they wouldn’t hire me!"

And most of the time Marisa is perfectly happy with ditching the dazzling DOND duds for a more casual look. "I love to just hang out in jeans and a T-shirt and just be really comfortable," she explains. "I don’t wear a lot of makeup." And perhaps that’s the reason fans don’t always recognize her walking down the street, though occasionally, she says, "I will have people doing double takes, like, ‘She looks familiar, where do I know her from?’"

Well, if things go as she hopes, it won’t be long before people don’t have to ask that question. Marisa recently starred opposite Paul Rudd in the film version of the Comedy Central hit Reno 911 and her upcoming film Everybody Wants to Be Italian (CLICK HERE for film’s website) will be hitting theaters March 7.

"I’d like to continue working as a film actress, that’s my focus," Marisa tells OK! about her plans for the future. "But I’d like to be producing and writing as well. I and a few friends, we started writing and just kind of taking power into our own hands and creating our own projects. I have my own production company, Do It From the Heart Productions. It’s at the genesis right now."

But not all of Marisa’s goals are about silver screen stardom. A survivor of rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare childhood cancer that affects the muscles, she has become heavily involved in recent years with The Sarcoma Foundation of America, which she discovered through the family of another famous Marisa — Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei. "I met Marisa’s brother Adam at a screening and he mentioned that he has a type of Sarcoma as well. So we bonded over being sarcoma survivors, and he mentioned that his parents were on the board of the Sarcoma Foundation of America, and I got in touch with them that way."

Check out Marisa on her website, marisapetroro.com, and see her and all the other models Wed., Jan. 2, as Deal or No Deal returns — and host Howie Mandel relaunches his Million Dollar Mission in the hopes of finding the show’s first-ever million-dollar winner!

OK! Interview: Deal Or No Deal’s Aubrie Lemon

October 24th, 2007 / Author: cwillett

This is the first in OK!’s series of up-close interviews with the lovely ladies of the NBC hit Deal or No Deal. Stay tuned to OKmagazine.com every week to learn more about your favorite glamour gals!

While the gorgeous Aubrie Lemon might be best known as #23 on Deal or No Deal, OK! learned that this musically gifted (she plays the harp!) Florida native has a lot more lurking behind that brilliant smile.

You do realize that you’ve got a perfect name for TV?
Oh,
thank you! [Laughs] Everybody has a different take on my name, but it’s
okay, I respond to all of them. I definitely had the whole range of
nicknames when I was a kid. My grandfather called me Juice and my
friends called me everything from Lemonhead to Lemonade. It’s funny
because people ask, “Is that your real name?” And I think, “Oh, my god,
if I was going to pick a name I probably wouldn’t have chosen Lemon.”
But it turns out that because it’s so catchy and unique, people
remember it.

After a couple of seasons on such a hit show, do you get recognized now when you walk down the street?

It
depends on where I am. In L.A., nobody really cares because everybody’s
known for some TV show or movie or commercial or print ad. It’s when I
travel — to the Midwest particularly — that a lot of times, if I don’t
have my hair and makeup done, people will look at me and say, “Do I
know you? You look so familiar. Your voice is just so familiar.” They
just don’t assume they know me from TV. But it’s kind of funny how
people semi-recognize me.

So you don’t normally dress like you do on the show?
Oh, we do! I just came from the gym actually, in my rhinestones! [Laughs] A lot of people are surprised to learn that a lot of
the girls aren’t as high-maintenance as we may appear. Day to day I
don’t wear makeup or do my hair. We’re very low-key and normal.

What’s it like being so closely associated with the number 23? Do you ever feel like you’re on a sports team?
Following in Michael Jordan’s
footsteps is a tough act! I actually love my number because there
aren’t a lot of scandalous things associated with 23. Like, 13 gets a
bad rap, and 7 — the gambling numbers everybody has phobias about.
Earlier this season, we did an episode where the NFL made us jerseys
with our names on the back. It was so cool! Then they auctioned them
off and we never saw them again.

Do you enjoy all the costume changes on the show?
Well,
we generally wear one dress per episode, but occasionally we’ll do
something special. Like, there’s a contestant who’s a policeman in an
upcoming show, and halfway through we reenter all wearing police
uniforms. We wore mail-carrier costumes one time — we’ve got all kinds
of good stuff. We’ve got a bikini episode coming up!

Does that mean Howie will be in a Speedo?
No, no, no! [Laughs] Our producers tried to humor us by wearing sarongs that day over their jeans, but it wasn’t the same.

Speaking of your outfits, how in the world do you stand for so long in those heels?
Thankfully
for me, I’m in the back row, so I have less chance of falling down the
stairs and making a fool of myself. We’ve had some accidents, but I
have to say the girls fall very gracefully and the show’s not live so
we can just redo it!

So you wouldn’t air someone taking a plunge down the steps?
No!
We put together little blooper clips for our wrap party at the end of
each season — I think they even put them in slow motion!

What’s the least glamourous part of the job?
Standing
is a lot harder than I realized and smiling is a lot harder than I
realized. Those are two things everyone does without thinking, but when
you have to do them for extended periods of time it really makes you
realize, “Wow, I’ve got to work on these cheek muscles, and get them
back in shape for season 3!”

Do you ever get personally invested in the game?
Absolutely!
Especially if they’re playing for a school they want to give back to or
a charity they want to help out or their family is really in need.
You’re truly rooting for them to do well. And it’s inevitable that
somebody’s case is holding those high amounts. And if they’re going to
be taking it all the way to the end it’s inevitable that you’re going
to be opening some of those amounts. So yeah, it hurts. It hurts our
feelings when we open them because we feel a personal responsibility
with our case — “Oh, I’m sorry I had to give you this!”

Where did a girl from small-town Florida learn to play the harp?
Oh,
there’s a whole secret society of harpists out there! [Laughs] My
family, we used to go camping a lot and go to all these festivals, and
I saw a harpist playing a little folk harp and that’s what caught my
interest. I’d already had 8 years of piano behind me, and the harp is
just like a piano turned upright. I told my mom I wanted to take harp
lessons and we found a harp teacher, no problem, and that’s how it all
got started. You just don’t realize it’s an instrument that people
actually play. I love music and I think an instrument like that that’s
so unique and so intriguing – it was just, like, “Wow, why not? I can
do that.” So I did. And then I started playing professionally at
weddings and art shows before I moved to L.A., and then I moved here
and I got busy.

Where do you see yourself in five or 10 years?
It’s
so hard to say. When I first moved out here, it was just for fun and I
wasn’t thinking long term. I’ve been out here about five years now, and
each year I’ve said, “Just one more year, just one more year… I’m
going to have a little more fun and move back to the East Coast and
settle down and have a real job.” But each year that’s passed I’ve had
more success and established myself more. And now it would be silly for
me to leave in the middle of this amazing blessing that’s been given to
me. So, I’ve stopped putting timelines on anything. And that’s what I
love about my life — from day to day, each job I do — modeling, working
on Deal or No Deal — every day is different, and it’s exciting
and I never know what’s coming. I have a great life; I don’t know
what’s around the corner, but I’m enjoying it while it’s here.
