Quaid Overdose Case Closed
January 8th, 2009
An L.A. judge signed off today on a $750,000 settlement between Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly Quaid and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center over a potentially fatal overdose of blood thinners given to their newborn twins.
Entertainment Tonight is reporting that in the deal, struck in December and made official on Thursday, the hospital did not admit any wrongdoing for the 2007 incident, in which Zoe Grace and Thomas Boone Quaid were accidentally administered 1,ooo times the recommended amount of heparin, commonly used to flush out I.V.s.
Cedars was fined $25,000 by the California Department of Health for the error.
The Quaids sued Heparin manufacturer Baxter Healthcare Corporation for negligence, citing poorly labeled bottles. According to settlement papers, the action was dismissed on jurisdictional grounds, because the event happened in California.
Dennis Quaid & Wife Settle Lawsuit
December 16th, 2008
Last year, Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly Buffington watched their newborn twins suffer through 1,000 times the needed dose of blood thinner Heparin, and now part of that ordeal is over.
The couple have agreed to a $750,000 settlement with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A., which administered the wrong dosage in December 2007 after the Quaid twins, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, were brought in for a staph infection. The hospital does not admit wrongdoing in the settlement, however, according to the Associated Press.
After becoming extremely ill due to the overdose the babies recovered after two weeks; however there have been no long-term studies on the effects of Heparin overdoses in children.
The settlement is just on behalf of the parents’ damages, other claims for the kids can still be pursued. The Quaids also tried suing the makers of the drug but that case was dismissed.
Dennis Quaid Lashes Back at Meg Ryan
September 29th, 2008
Dennis Quaid is hitting back at ex-wife Meg Ryan after she opened up about their divorce, saying that he had repeatededly cheated on her.
"Dennis was not faithful to me for a long time, and that was very painful," she told In Style.
"It was eight years ago, and I find it unbelievable that Meg continues publicly to rehash and rewrite the story of our relationship," Dennis tells New York Daily News’ Rush & Molloy.
"Also, I find it regrettable that our son, Jack, has to be reminded in a public way of the turmoil and pain that every child feels in a divorce."
Dennis is also angry at what others are saying, including a source who says of the couples’ custody agreement that "Meg came to believe he was drinking again and wanted full physical custody of Jack."
However, "Meg and I have always had joint custody of Jack without any stipulations whatsoever," Dennis claims.
"I, myself, moved on years ago and am fortunate to have a happy, beautiful family," adds Dennis, who married Kimberly Buffington and had twins last November.

Dennis Quaid Leaving Hollywood
June 13th, 2008
Dennis Quaid is ready to say goodbye to Hollywood.
No, he’s not retiring from acting, but he is moving.
"The train is going down the tracks!" he tells Extra.
The actor and his wife, Kimberly, are planning to uproot their family, which includes 7-month-old Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace to his hometown of Houston.
"We have a lot of family there and we have a really nice plot of land," he says. "We have 30 or 40 friends and family members within two miles of us. Its kind of a no-brainer."
Leaving Los Angeles will also put a devastating 2007 behind him. Last November, his twins nearly died from an accidental overdose of the drug Heparin. Thomas and Zoe were given 10,000 units of Heparin; the normal dosage for infants is 10 units. The children were treated and are now doing well.
"They went through a medical catastrophe. Thank God it had a happy ending," Dennis says. We took them [kids] to the kiddie pool for their first swim today. They loved it.
The 54-year-old and his wife have since taken action to prevent such medical nightmares from happening again by establishing a foundation to minimize the impact of human error.
"We would like to start by bar coding," he says. "With a bar code, [a nurse] can scan the medicine and scan the bracelet of the patient. Scan her own tag and if theres a mistake, it will come up."
Dennis Quaid’s Mellow Father’s Day
June 2nd, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff
For Dennis Quaid, this year’s Father’s Day will be a relatively mellow affair.
"I’m just going to lie there! I am so sleep deprived!" he told OK! at the Stand Up to Cancer Initiative announcement in Beverly Hills. "I’m just going to get my ties and sit around and be with my babies and my wife."
The slower pace is a welcome change for the actor and wife Kimberly whose six-month-old twins survived a life-threatening drug overdose late last year.
"I am just so lucky," says Quaid. "The twins are doing great. I love to watch them getting food all over their faces. I love watching them sleep. It is all the little things."
Now that he has had to be twice the dad, what is his advice for new parents?
"Sleep!" he laughs. "Get some sleep! I don’t care if it’s two in the afternoon, if those babies are finally asleep, you sleep too!"
The actor may have just finished a grueling month filming the new action flick G.I. Joe, but when asked if father really does know best he says, "father may know best most of the time but let me tell you, mother trumps whatever father thinks he knows every time!"

Cedars Fined for Quaid Twins Screw-Up
March 20th, 2008 / Author: cwillett
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the hospital that gave an overdose of blood thinner to three infants, including the twins of actor Dennis Quaid, has been fined $25,000.
TMZ is reporting that after an investigation, the California Department of Public Health found that hospital personnel failed to follow their own procedures for safe medication use, and that resulted in what they called "preventable medication errors."
Back in November, the Quaids’ then 10 day old twin newborns, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, were given an overdose of the drug, Heparin.
According to Cedars, a total of three babies were given doses of 10,000 or more units per mililiter of the drug.
The normal dosage is 10 units.
Hospital officials said the children affected were all treated and did not show any lasting ill effects from the overdose. In December, Quaid and his wife, Kimberly Buffington, sued Baxter Healthcare, claiming the drug company failed to change the medication’s labels to prevent confusion over dosages.
