Julia Roberts Upstages Tom Hanks

April 28th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Almost every movie star who is any movie star attends The Film Society’s Gala Tribute to Honor Tom Hanks held Monday at NYC’s Alice Tully Hall.

A dizzying array of A-listers including Julia Roberts, Charlize Theron, Adrien Brody, Glenn Close, Sally Field and Steven Spielberg are greeted with hoots and hollers when they enter the building.

“I feel like it’s my birthday,” Pretty Woman Julia says when she hears the cheers. The mom of three, 41, cuts a slim figure and is the essence of effortless glamour.

Why did the allure of Tom Hanks steal the Oscar winner from twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 4, and Henry, 22 months, this evening?

“He’s a great, sort of quintessential actor,” Julia says. “He does campy comedies from Bosom Buddies, where I fell madly in love with him, to a movie like Castaway. Someone says ‘what is Tom like?’ and I say ‘oh, he’s what you’d want him to be.’”

Charlize Theron seconds that thought. “He’s just very sincere, and he lives a very truthful life,” the Oscar winner, 32, tells me. “He’s never kind of done anything that wasn’t authentic to him, and I so appreciate that about him.” The blond beauty, wearing steep heels, just returned from Salma Hayek’s weekend wedding in Venice. “It was beautiful,” she tells me. Favorite thing she did in Italy? “I ate lots of pasta.”

Adrien Brody is also adjusting from jet lag, but doesn’t let that stop him from honoring Mr. Hanks. “I just woke up from a flight,” the sleepy-headed Oscar winner, 36, tells me. “Tom’s obviously an incredible actor, and someone who has worked incredibly hard. I think his kindness and his spirit shines through in the performances, and it gives him a sense that I think everyone feels very familiar with him and a connection to him. I think he’s an impressive man.”

Here comes Tom Hanks, the self-deprecating man of the evening, cracking jokes and making punch lines every step of the way. “My joke is I think I’ve made about twenty-five movies, and I think four of them are pretty good,” the two-time Oscar winner, 52, says with wife Rita Wilson, 52, at his side. “Listen, I’m a lucky man. I’ll take a free dinner.”

What’s the best advice he’s given his son? “Always wear a fresh shirt, and don’t try to sweat in it too much,” Colin Hanks, 31, tells me.

Ron Howard, Saturday Night Live writer/producer Lorne Michaels, Christy Turlington and hubby Ed Burns, John Leguizamo and wife Justine dash to their seats just in time for the tribute to begin.

Turns out, Julia lets loose with a tirade of F-bombs all in good fun. Who knew?!

Stars Align for Can-Do Awards

April 16th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

Fashionable foodies unite at the Food Bank’s Fifth Annual Can-Do Awards held at NYC’s Pier Sixty.

Honoree (and Food Bank volunteer) Gwyneth Paltrow gets support from her Spain … on the Road Again reality co-star, chef Mario Battali, but gracious Gwyneth says the praise belongs to Food Bank president Lucy Cabrera.

“She’s been able to affect such change in New York,” the mother of two says. “I’m thrilled to be here and help in any way I can.”

Petra Nemcova gives one of many three-part kisses to the Extra reporter. “There’s no point in putting lipstick on me because it’s going to come off,” she chuckles.

What’s Rachael Ray’s favorite junk food?

“I never get angry at food,” she laughs. “I don’t have junk food. I don’t have anger with food. I enjoy a chip as much as I enjoy a five-course meal. I’m good with food.”

Honoree Helena Christensen says she can’t get enough Magnolia Bakery’s banana pudding as well as cheese, milk and yogurt … American Idol finalist Kimberly Locke reveals she lost 40 pounds on Jenny Craig by “doing it the healthy way” … Christy Turlington and Ed Burns confess, “I have allergies,” she says … and Katie Lee Joel loves it when hubby Billy Joel serves up his specialties — spaghetti Bolognese and strip steak.

What does Michael Stipe pony up when asked for food drive donations? “I’m from Georgia, so black-eyed peas,” he says. “That’s my favorite dish. I like to have them with ketchup.”

At 7:52, Gwyneth’s mom Blythe Danner turns up. Just in time to see her baby girl get a new trophy to keep that Oscar company.

Madonna, Justin Roll Backstage at Rock Hall Induction Ceremony

March 12th, 2008

At 10:39 p.m., Madonna graces us with her presence backstage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony held at NYC’s Waldorf-Astoria. She adoringly glances at Justin Timberlake as she poses for photos while her uber-publicist Liz Rosenberg races around wearing a silver ‘80s-style headband complete with a googly antenna. Afterwards, a fellow red carpet reporter happens upon the same elevator as Madge but gets rebuffed. So close!

During her induction speech, Madonna reveals her life was either a series of suddenlys or else it happened just as it should have been.

“Everything happens exactly as it was supposed to happen,” she says of her stellar career. “That I worked with the amazing people I was supposed to work with, that I traveled to the amazing places I was supposed to travel to, that I made the mistakes that I was supposed to make. That the universe would conspire to help me and guide me only up to this moment where I am standing in front of you.”

Justin, who inducted her, reminded the pop icon of the scathing reviews she’s received over the years. “Madonna will be out of the music industry in six months. Her voice is like Minnie Mouse on helium. Comparing Marilyn Monroe to Madonna is like comparing Raquel Welch to the back of the bus. That’s what they were saying about Madonna 25 years ago. I don’t think any of them are around to say it tonight.”

Back in the press room, Ben Harper gives props to rock music. “There’s no rules,” Laura Dern’s hubby says. “That’s what I love about rock and roll.”

Patti LaBelle confesses she canceled another event because she wanted to be here tonight. “One year I’m going to be inducted. Uh-huh.”

Inductees Gamble and Huff say they’re going to “party, party, party” to celebrate their induction.

Dave Clark, of inductee The Dave Clark Five, says American music in the ’60s was responsible for the British invasion. “I’m absolutely delighted. It’s a very, very proud moment for us. It doesn’t matter how long it takes.” (Tom Hanks mugs with the group!)

Saturday Night Live star Seth Meyers reveals he’s scouting the ceremony for material. “I guarantee you will find out on Saturday. If anyone has ever done anything to get on Saturday Night Live, it was today.”

Ed Burns and Christy Turlington roll through. He yuks that his favorite movie is Man for the City, which is “about a corrupt mayor of New York who gets caught in a sexual scandal.” (Ahem, Eliot Spitzer.) Michael J. Fox and wife Tracy Pollen pose for photos … and Chevy Chase announces he’s running for president.

Meanwhile, inductee John Mellencamp, Billy Joel and more stop by the On 3 Productions gift lounge, where they pick up D’Annunzio Group International jewelry, a Starlight Tattoo gift card, a New York Health and Racquet Club membership and SONU beverages.

Next year, the ceremony will take place in Cleveland at the actual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I’m going home! So fun.

Christy Turlington, Ed Burns Work and Play Together

February 27th, 2008

Christy Turlington and hubby Ed Burns are a perfect match.

“We have a lot in common,” the 39-year-old mom to Grace, 4, and Finn, 2, tells me. “We’re both pretty easygoing, low-key people. Our family is our priority.”

What’s the best gift he’s given her recently?

“It was actually for my birthday. He blew up a huge photograph. A friend of ours, Pamela Hanson, did a huge black and white photograph. It was really huge, sort of life-size. They look like works of art because they’re so big and abstract. It’s very sweet that the biggest thing he could think about was something that involved our kids.”

The couple, who belong to the Writers’ Guild, recently finished working on a movie script.

“It was a great experience,” she says. “We took turns actually. We didn’t write in the same room. But it was really fun, and we’re really proud of what we made. They’re really happy with it and hopefully something will come of it now that the strike is over.”

Celebs Sparkle at Chanel Event

January 28th, 2008

Blake Lively, Selma Blair, Julia Stiles, Josh Lucas, Ellen Pompeo, Helena Christensen, Christy Turlington and Ed Burns turn out to toast Chanel Fine Jewelry’s Night Of Diamonds at The Plaza in NYC.

“I love Chanel so much,” super-chatty Blake says. “It’s everything. It’s the epitome of what a lady should be. It’s class. I have the shoes, the jewelry, it’s really a problem. They say it’s an addiction. Some people take drugs; I do stuff with Chanel.”

She adds, “The bags are a problem. I just got one right before I came here. I just got this big, beautiful, leather clutch that says Chanel on it. It’s black. It’s actually written out Chanel instead of the CC, which you don’t see very often. That was really exciting.”

Seconds after Selma vogues for the cameras, she agrees that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. “I bought myself a diamond ring last week. It’s a present for myself, but I have a lot of diamonds that friends have given me through the years and that’s what means the most.” She talks about her first Chanel item. “I had a Chanel bag when I was about 16 that was my mother’s that I infiltrated from her wardrobe. I thought I was really hot stuff.”

Christy is thrilled to be at The Plaza. “I remember classic times having tea in the atrium area. I just can’t wait to be able to do that with my daughter [Grace, 4]. She’s getting to the age where she’d like that sort of thing. I did that with my mom and my grandmother. It’s a classic thing to do New York if you’re a girl or a lady.”

Christy and hubby Ed can’t wait for the writers’ strike to be over because – hidden talent alert – she is a member of the Writers Guild! They even wrote a script together.

Helena can’t wait to see the refurbished landmark. "I’ve gotta run," she cries.

As newlywed Ellen Pompeo grasps onto hubby Chris Ivery, Josh literally runs into the press area, knocking into the velvet rope. “Thanks guys,” he shouts. Who is he rooting for in the Super Bowl? “Giants,” Salma Hayek’s ex says on his way into the private dinner. Whoa… he looks like Matthew McConaughey.

Here’s Tula-clad Julia, who is the only gal who doesn’t wear Chanel to the designer’s event. “I’m running late,” she says, as she and her beau dash through. Tsk, tsk.
