Around 200 guests were on hand to memorialize the late entertainer. Natalie Cole sang her touching ballad "Smile," while Ed’s wife Pam and his children and grandchildren spoke as well.

Britney Spears on Ed McMahon

As the entertainment community reacts today to the news of Ed McMahon’s passing at 86, Britney Spears has added her condolences as an artist via her Twitter page.

"I am deeply saddened by today’s news about Ed McMahon," she writes. "He is responsible for giving so many artists their first shot including myself. He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed."

Britney appeared on Star Search, which Ed hosted, in the early days of her career at age 10, but ultimately lost.

Ed passed away today after a long battle with cancer. Ed, who spent more than 30 years as Johnny Carson’s co-host and sidekick on The Tonight Show, had been hospitalized at the UCLA Ronald Reagan Hospital in L.A. in recent months for pneumonia related to his systemic bone cancer.

In addition to his decades on the late-night NBC talk show, Ed had success on his own as the original host of Star Search and, along with fellow TV legend Dick Clark, TV Bloopers and Practical Jokes. He was also the long-time face of the Publishers’ Clearing House Sweepstakes.

TV Legend Ed McMahon Passes Away

June 23rd, 2009

There is sad news to report for TV fans, as NBC News has confirmed that Ed McMahon has died at the age of 86 after a long battle with cancer.

Last summer, Ed found himself back in the spotlight when financial troubles forced him to sell his home in order to avoid foreclosure. He also recently appeared — as a rapper, of all things — in commercials for Cash For Gold.

Ed leaves behind a wife of 16 years, Pam, along with five children. Our hearts go out to them during this time of grief.

Ed McMahon Battling for His Life

March 2nd, 2009

While Ed McMahon is in the intensive care unit at an L.A.-area hospital battling pneumonia and systemic bone cancer, with perhaps only days to live, the TV personality is still determined to fight back against the illnesses plaguing his body.

TMZ reports that his rep Howard Bragman has released a statement highlighting Ed’s strength and resolve to get better.

"I’m not a medical doctor, I’m a spin doctor, so I’m not able to give a diagnosis here," the statement says." But, what I can tell you is this: I’ve seen many people come up to Ed over the years and say, ‘You were a Marine.’ Ed would look them in the eye and say, ‘I AM a Marine.’ What that means for his current medical challenges is the same thing it’s meant for every challenge he’s ever faced in life. It means he’s a fighter — not a quitter. It means he’s confronting it head-on with strength, courage and dignity."

As some reports indicate Ed’s fighting a losing battle with his health, Bragman underscores the fact that support from fans is vital.

"I would ask that those who care about Ed say a prayer, remain hopeful and send their good wishes, because Colonel McMahon is still fighting the good fight," he says in the statement. "Ed, his family, and friends are looking forward to celebrating his 86th birthday Friday."

Television icon Ed McMahon has been hospitalized and his condition said to be "extremely serious."

A family member confirmed to ET that the 85-year-old has been at an L.A. area hospital for nearly one month to treat pneumonia. He is in the intensive care unit where he was also recently diagnosed with systemic bone cancer.

A source tells ET that McMahon’s wife Pam’s "deep faith is helping her though this difficult time."

According to TMZ, a person close to the TV personality calls his condition, "extremely serious. It’s not great, to say the least."

Ed’s rep, Howard Bragman, who confirmed the hospitalization, added, "He’s not at Cedars-Sinai" — a dig on the hospital Ed is suing for alleged malpractice and elder abuse.

Ed McMahon Treated for Smoke Inhalation

November 20th, 2008

Ed McMahon is recovering after being treated for shortness of breath.

TMZ is reporting that McMahon was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A. over the weekend and doctors put him in the Cardiac Unit. However, after running tests, they discovered Ed’s heart was just fine. Instead, he, like many other Southern Californians, was suffering from choking smoke–the result of the multiple wildfires in the L.A. area.

McMahon suffered respiratory problems with symptoms similar to a heart attack, but tonight the former Star Search host is home and doing just fine.

Ed Sells Home

August 22nd, 2008

Former Tonight show sidekick Ed McMahon has agreed to sell his home – and not to Donald Trump!

Howard Bragman, Ed’s spokesman, says that a deal has been reached on the California digs – which is in the same neighborhood as Britney Spears’ pad – and that Ed will be moving out when the sale is complete.

After Ed defaulted on a $4.8 million loan and faced foreclosure, Donald Trump had offered to buy the house and act as landlord.

We’re not sure we’d want our landlord yelling "You’re fired!" either.
