OK! Interview: Gavin DeGraw

March 27th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Gavin DeGraw isn’t just a pretty face!

The In Love With a Girl singer has recently been on a trip with the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign to combat the deadly malaria epidemic.

On his visit to Uganda, in east Africa, Gavin met with refugees, handed out bed nets – which keep malaria-carrying mosquitoes away at night — and helped to teach people on how to use them.

In an OK! exclusive, Gavin shares his experiences on the trip and tells us about his new album Free.

Tell us about your experience in Uganda.

[Malaria] is a massive killer and an illness that was creating dire need, since millions of people were dying from it — and it’s a simple, practical and affordable fix. It brought a new meaning to certain things that I take for granted.

What surprised you the most when you were down there?

Most of the medical facilities on the settlements were in such bad shape and most had only one doctor there seven days a week.  The percentage of patients that suffer from malaria is up to 85 percent.

What’s your newest album Free all about?

“I spend lots of time analyzing myself and this album is about figuring myself out in a sense, not in a vain way but more in a critical way. It reflects my own personal battle from within and my many extremes.”

When and where do you go when you write?

Typically it’s where you sleep — my bedroom but when you’re touring on the road, it’s in your bedroom on the bus because that’s your privacy place and only alone time. For this album, I spent a lot of time in my piano room at my studio in Brooklyn being a bit of a hermit there just hunched over my notebook hours on end.

You’ve obviously written several songs for ladies. How many and do you tell them its about them?

I’ve written over 100.  It doesn’t mean I’ve liked 100 – its not like each girl gets one song but when you’re into somebody that’s your life. I would never tell them I’m writing about them. I would encrypt it in such a way that they would have no idea, because what if it doesn’t work out and then they always have bragging rights that there’s a song about them? You don’t want to leave someone with that kind of victory.

What makes you like most other guys out there?

My jeans. You get that pair of jeans where you feel most comfortable and you kind of wear them until your friends say, ‘hey man, weren’t you wearing those last month? Haven’t you washed them? They’re not as comfortable when you wash them cause they get all tight and all.

Nicole Richie Not with DJ AM

September 22nd, 2008

While her ex-fiance, DJ AM, recovers in a Georgia burn center following Friday’s tragic plane crash that killed four others, Nicole Richie is in L.A., her rep confirmed.

"Nicole Richie did not fly anywhere Saturday and on Sunday, was in L.A., celebrating her birthday," her rep told Extra on Monday.

Nicole, who now has a baby girl with boyfriend Joel Madden, began dating AM, a.k.a. Adam Goldstein, in 2004. The pair announced their engagement a year later in 2005 but ultimately called it off.

Meanwhile, singer Gavin DeGraw tells OK!:

"My heart goes out to the friends and families of those affected by this tragedy.  I wish Travis and Adam the best during their recovery."

The Road’s a Lonely Place For Gavin DeGraw

July 1st, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

A rock star’s life can be a lonesome one — just ask Gavin DeGraw.

The "I Don’t Want To Be" singer told OK! recently that he’d love to be in a steady relationship.

But he says his whirlwind lifestyle of non-stop touring is a major turn-off for girls!

We talked romance with Gavin last night when he stumbled upon New York premiere of Glamour magazine’s Reel Docs movie, which is supported by Tommy Hilfiger, on his way to play a show ("I saw the Hilfiger logo and came over to say ‘hi’ —I love that whole family!").

"Oh God — it’s at a standstill!," he said of his love life.

"It’s so tough to make that stuff work while you’re traveling.

"I think that’s an attraction [for girls] at first, but then it’s ultimately a turn-off."

And while he says he is the kind of guy who likes to be in a long-term relationship, it’s not always that simple.

"I’d prefer that — but I’m an idealist living in a practical world!"

Gifting Miley Cyrus

May 23rd, 2008

Miley Cyrus sweeps into the Izod Fragrance Artist Gift Lounge backstage at Z100’s Zootopia wearing a huge smile on her face, a Topshop dress and a jacket so expensive she would never buy it herself.

Shocking? Nah. The Hannah Montana star, 15, is a penny-pincher. “She had a Blackberry but she lost it, and she’s too cheap to get another one,” I hear. Luckily, she receives a Blackberry Pearl in her stash of goodies.

Miley
curls up on the couch to chat with Z100 before taking inventory of her new accessories. She raids the stainless steel jewelry line from Black and Blue taking one of everything. She’s eager to schedule her new Roomba to vacuum her room while she’s away on tour. And, during a round of The Box Girls Box of Questions Conversation Starter Games, she says, “I’d sit in my boxer shorts and play video games all day if I was a boy.”

Well, if she was a boy she might be just like half-brother Trace Cyrus, who is in the electro-pop band Metro Station. Miley joins him onstage during the pre-show, and the crowd goes wild.

“She was chilling,” he tells me. “She was sitting there watching it.”

One thing Trace has that Miley doesn’t is a body filled with tattoos. His favorite? “This one right here,” he tells me, flexing his arm. It says ‘This time here will never last.’ It’s lyrics to one of my dad’s [Billy Ray Cyrus] songs.”

Lunchtime! I grab a meal ticket and scope out the catering section, where I bump into New Kids On The Block. I’m enjoying my roast beef sandwich, French fries, potato salad and sugar cookie when the guys roll through. “It’s too crowded in here,” Donnie Wahlberg laments. “Let’s eat in the dressing room.” (Bummer!)

The guys roll into the gift lounge. The highlight is the Roomba. Danny Wood, who is a single dad, is excited to get housework help from the gadget. And Jordan Knight says the device will free up the time his wife would spend vacuuming. Joey McIntyre walks up and announces “We are in the future.”

Here’s Gavin DeGraw. I’ll never forget the first thing he said to me years ago when we met in a club: “Are you married?” And then, he had the hit single I Don’t Want To Be. I have the worst luck with this. Anyone whose advances I’ve dismissed always hits the big time. (Hello, Bill Rancic.) Gavin’s still got it. “Hi gorgeous,” he says. Hm, is he dating anyone now? “I’m too busy right now to fail at a relationship.” I see…

Another fun guy is Simple Plan’s Chuck Comeau. He’s up there – he cracks me up, and his Quebecois accent makes me smile. I once interviewed Simple Plan on a bed at The Time Hotel in NYC. (Not my idea – theirs.) He remembers. What’s his status? “Single and open for business,” he tells me. I was also there when he asked Kelly Clarkson out a few years ago at a Z100 event. “Nothing ever happened with that. I thought I had an ‘in’ – I thought I was in, but it’s OK. I’ve moved on. I’m stalking other people now like Megan Fox. She’s so hot … she has an amazing talent at acting. She’s absolutely gorgeous.” (Ooh, he’ll have to fight Jesse McCartney.)

Whoa! Love Song singer Sara Bareilles is getting lavished with praise by each member of Danity Kane. Sara is loving the adoration – she’s on top of the world.

Does Sara ever get tired of performing her megahit?

“I have my moments of not being so excited about it, but overall it’s so very fun,” she tells me. “It’s at the point now where people are knowing the words and singing along. That’s very rewarding.”

Danity Kane’s Aubrey O’Day admits she loves to buy handbags. “I’m disgusting about purses,” she tells me. “There’s a purple Prada bag that I really want right now. I just feel like a couple more shows and I’ll feel like I deserve it.”

Here come the Jonas Brothers! Shhh …

The Final Three — What You Didn’t See

May 14th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

After months of tryouts, eliminations, auditions, performances, interviews, commercial shoots and even more eliminations, it’s come down to this — the final three contestants on the seventh season of American Idol. And so it was fitting that this trio of competitors would each sing three songs — one selected by an Idol judge; one of their own choosing; one dictated by the hit show’s producers.

But before the show could even begin, the contestants were given an object lesson — in the form of Season One runner-up Justin Guarini — in just how important it is to be crowned the Idol champ. According to an in-audience witness, when the puffy-haired singer, who came in second to original Idol Kelly Clarkson back in 2002, entered the studio on Tuesday night, the star of notorious box-office bomb From Justin to Kelly "went practically unnoticed as he walked to his seat and got a weak applause when the warm-up guy announced him to the crowd."

Ouch.

Conversely, the finalists saw the kind of attention a bona fide success merits when singer Gavin DeGraw snuck through the mosh-pit area near the stage to get to his seat. And even though fans and celebs will line up to say hi to Idol judge Randy Jackson, the big dawg made a bee line straight to Gavin’s seat for a quick, pre-show chat.

Surely Randy’s fellow judge Paula Abdul would have liked to join in on that discussion — if she hadn’t shown up late again! The "nice judge," well-known for her last-minute entrances during the live broadcasts, actually had to sneak out to her seat after the broadcast had begun.

When it finally came down to performance time, ever-ornery judge Simon Cowell chose Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” for swirly haired singer David Cook to croon, claiming that “many former girlfriends say I inspired the lyrics.” Maybe, Simon, but from the audience it was hard to tell if Cowell’s current girlfriend, Extra correspondent Terri Seymour, agreed. At the very least, Terri certainly enjoyed David’s take on the song, standing to applaud after he was done.

After the first round of performances, Gavin DeGraw was pointed out to the crowd, earning the rocker a big round of applause. One Swedish girl in the front of the mosh-pit publicly requested that DeGraw change the date of his upcoming concert in Sweden so she could make it to the show.

For his personal choice, David Archuleta stepped a bit out of character to take a stab at Chris Brown’s “With You.” Following the oddball performance, Simon likened it to “a Chihuahua trying to be like a tiger” – a reaction that got a big laugh out of DeGraw.

Syesha had a celebrity fan of her in own in actress Marilu Henner, who moved to her front row seats just before the show started. The TV star and author was up on her feet and dancing to Syesha’s performance of “Hit Me Up” from the Happy Feet soundtrack.

During a commercial break, two lucky kids, George and Robbie McGlashan, scored autographs on their American Idol shirts from Simon and Paula. But as their mom, Marie McGlashan told OK! “They’re hoping to get David Cook’s autograph too.”

The McGlashan family weren’t the only ones with Cook fever last night. Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe appeared to clearly favor the bartender-turned-star. After Cook’s rendition of Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing," Lythgoe was raising his fists over his head and dancing around in joy. (The song’s writer, Dianne Warren, was on-hand and also appeared to approve.) But when buzzkill Randy didn’t give the performace the rave reviews Lythgoe was looking to hear, the AI producer was overheard asking, “What’s with Randy?”

So what did you think? Does Syesha have enough momentum to carry her through to the finals? Or will it be a battle of the Davids?

Friday Night Fun

January 13th, 2008

I’m not usually a big fan of venturing out on a Friday night, but I think it’s more I don’t like to go places that I ‘have’ to go on Friday nights, I’m fine if the places I go are with good friends purely by choice. Last night was fun.

A dozen or so of us began the night drinking copious amounts of wine at a friend’s loft- a sick studio-like space easily four times the size of my apartment. When we were getting ready to go check out 1OAK someone said “Big Al is on his way, get ready for an experience on the ride there.” I started thinking Big Al must be coming with a bus because by this point our party had grown to 14! But, no, Big Al rolled up in a stretch white limo with a lighting streak down the side, fluorescent purple lights underneath and disco balls among other late-70s garb decorating the inside. It was certainly quite a ride!

After an hour at 1OAK, a lounge rather than a club, (so I was a fan) )and even a bit of dancing, we went to check out National Underground, a new dive bar a few blocks from my house that Gavin Degraw recently opened. My friend visiting from Miami is a friend of Gavin’s so she introduced us and somehow next thing I knew were debating politics. He’s quite intelligent and after a few hours of drinking I stopped while I was ahead. Or, maybe I wasn’t ahead at all and we stopped because he actually got on the mic and sang! My friends all love Gavin and now I understand why. He’s an amazing singer, performer, smart – and cute too. I told him if he ever had any views he wanted to express he could guest blog sometime, but he basically said he has no desire to preach his beliefs to others. That just made me respect him so much more…But, maybe one day I can have him blog about something else, like music
