July 27th, 2009 / Author: Chris Morran

*Jennifer Lopez July 25One night after celebrating her 40th birthday with an intimate family and friends party at NYC’s Hotel Griffou, Jennifer Lopez was at it again on Saturday. This time, the singer/actress and hubby Marc Anthony were joined by a handful of celebrity guests at what was called “An Evening For Lola” at the Edison Ballroom.

Among those in attendance for the bash were Ricky Martin, Liza Minnelli, Gayle King, and J.Lo’s co-star in The Backup Plan, Alex O’Loughlin.

When Jennifer arrived at the ballroom, she appeared to be overcome with emotion. “She looked genuinely shocked, like she expected something, but not this,” one onlooker tells OK!. “She had a huge smile on her face and looked teary-eyed at one point as she went in.” Jen even took the time to greet and take pictures with some fans.

Oprah’s Words of Wisdom for College Grads

May 10th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Aside from all the memories of their years in college, the students in Duke University’s graduating class of 2009 were given one final memorable moment — a graduation speech from none other than Oprah Winfrey.

The talk-show queen was the feature speaker on Sunday at Duke’s Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, North Carolina, where she also was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the esteemed university. Oprah then joked to the crowd that she was going to make everyone call her "doctor" from now on.

Recognizing that it’s not only graduation day, but also Mother’s Day, Oprah requested that all the moms in the audience stand so they could receive a much-deserved round of applause.

In her speech, told the outgoing seniors, among whom was William Bumpus, Oprah’s godson and the son of her best friend and producer Gayle King, that while she’s happy and proud of her financial success, true happiness lies in helping others.

"It’s great to have a nice home. It’s great to have nice homes! It’s great to have a nice home that just escaped the fire in Santa Barbara," she said. "It’s great to have a private jet. Anyone that tells you that having your own private jet isn’t great is lying to you. You may achieve great things, but you haven’t completed the circle of success until you help someone else move to a higher ground and get to a better place."

That being said, Oprah explained that ultimately you’re going to have believe in yourself. "I am who I am because I trust my gut more than anyone else’s opinion," she said. "That is my best advice to you — Trust your gut. You know what is right and what is wrong. Trust your gut and stand in your own shoes and you will be a huge success"

She then launched into a laundry list of what is required for a truly successful life.
"If you can find a way to give back, you will be a huge success…
"If you can summon courage in the face of hardships, I know for sure that you will be a huge success…
"If you can see the possibilities of what you can become and not just what you are, you will be a huge success…
"If you can go through life with humility, you will be a huge success…
"If you can stand in your own shoes, you will be a huge success…
"If you can be generous enough to say kind, affirming words to those that long to hear them, you will be a huge success."

Of course, Oprah did have a few laughs with the audience. "Everyone always asks me who my favorite guest on the show is, and they always assume it is a movie star. It’s not," she explained. "It’s actually ordinary people who have accomplished great things.  But if it was a movie star it’d be Hugh Jackman. Ohhhh, and you can imagine why!"

Gayle King Dishes on Her BFF’s Tweets

April 22nd, 2009

Twitter is taking the nation by storm (haven’t you heard?) and now even Oprah Winfrey and BFF Gayle King are signed up as users. But Gayle is still getting used to the whole idea.

“I started it and that’s all I can say is I started it," she tells OK! at Vanity Fair’s launch party for the Tribeca Film Festival last night. "And somebody emailed me and said, ‘I haven’t seen any Twitters," and I’m trying to figure out what I’m supposed to be Twittering about.”

Gayle’s got standards, after all, as she says she’s not about to tweet over nothing.

"I think if you’re going to Twitter it should be something interesting or like Monday I said, ‘Now’s a time to remember Columbine,’ she explains to OK!. "I myself don’t want to say, ‘Now I’m going to Vanity Fair['s party]. I don’t want to do that. I saw somebody’s Twitter the other day. They said, ‘I’m going to lunch and I’m going to have a chicken sandwich.’ ”

As for her famous bestie, Gayle thinks the daytime diva has a lot to learn as well when it comes to the social network site.

“Look, Oprah just started. Let’s see how long it will last," she jokes.

Them’s fightin’ words, Gayle! We hope Oprah’s up for the challenge.

Gayle King Loves Michelle Obama

March 20th, 2009

As if Michelle Obama needs any more fans beyond the millions who already adore her. Be that as it may, add Gayle King to the list.

"I love her, and everything about her," Oprah Winfrey’s BFF told OK! at Valentino Last Emperor premiere and after party hosted by Quintessentially and Gilt Groupe.

So what was the best part about being with Michelle for her O cover shoot?

"You just feel so proud about Michelle. You really do. You feel that she is going to transform the First Lady’s office in a way that we’ve never seen before," Gayle revealed to OK!. "Despite being the First Lady, she’s still so normal on so many different levels, whether it comes to being a mom, whether it comes to being a power figure, whether it comes to being a wife. She just is so relatable on every single issue on every single level, and I love that."

Tell us how you really feel, Gayle!

Madonna, Gwyneth Share Night Out

March 18th, 2009

Gwyneth Paltrow is the belle of the ball during the Valentino: The Last Emperor premiere hosted by Quintessentially and Gilt Groupe held Tuesday at NYC’s Museum of Modern Art.

But the real surprise is when Madonna turns up at the after-party held in the Oak Room at The Plaza Hotel. Anything for Gwyneth, the Material Mom would surely say as she saunters into the party.

“It was hectic getting ready,” Gwyneth, 36, says. “We just flew in yesterday for this, and my kids are really jet-lagged. My son had a breakdown.  But it was OK. We got out the door.”

What does she love about the designer?

“He’s from another time,” the mother to Apple, 4, and Moses, 2, says. “He’s one of the last — it’s maybe him and Karl Lagerfeld. They’re from a whole other? era where things were made completely differently. The approach is ?very different – the attention to detail, the perfection. He’s a real? master. It was incredible to see. I had the pleasure of going to his couturier and watching him? work a couple of times. Those are memories that I will really ?treasure. It’s amazing to see.”

Here comes Anne Hathaway. What has Valentino taught her?

“The search for beauty in your life is a worthy endeavor,” she says.

Selita Ebanks admits her style icon is Kate Moss.

“I love her because she’s a genius,” the Victoria’s Secret model, who was once engaged to Nick Cannon, tells me. “She takes something that’s glamorous and mixes and matches expensive, trendy and something that’s out of the box. I think that she’s fearless. I love her.”

What’s a life ‘do’ for Martha Stewart? “Be creative,” she yuks.

Here comes Claire Danes gliding in arm-in-arm with fiancé Hugh Dancy, Oprah’s BFF Gayle King, Lake Bell, Gwyneth’s mom Blythe Danner, America’s Next Top Model Jaslene Gonzalez, Hugh Jackman’s wife Deborra-Lee Furness and Rachel Roy.

Agyness Deyn, donning a hooded dress, reveals her style inspiration.

“Whatever I wake up in the morning feeling,” she tells me.

Padma Lakshmi praises Valentino. “He’s just smart and sophisticated and Mediterranean,” Padma tells me. “He knows how to make a woman look gorgeous from head to toe.”

What’s something Karolina Kurkova can’t live without?

“My personal blend of oils,” she says, adding that we can’t buy it – yet. Hm, someone is dreaming of perfume deal …

What did Valentino think of the response to the film?

“I was very, very happy,” he says.

Oprah: One Size Doesn’t Fit All

September 25th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

She may be a billionaire who can have anything she wants, but Oprah Winfrey has one problem in common with her millions of TV viewers — finding the perfect pair of denims.

“One type of jeans does not fit all,” the chat show queen told OK! while checking out the truejeans.com booth at the Presenters Gift Lounge backstage at the Emmy Award.

“Women will always pay good money for good jeans.”

Oprah’s BFF Gayle King chimed in that they should make it the topic for an upcoming show. “You’re so right!” Oprah replied. “It would be perfect.”

Ali Larter, Kelly Rutherford Do Gracies

June 4th, 2008

TV’s most celebrated women turn out for American Women in Radio and Television’s Gracie Awards held at NYC’s Marriott Marquis.

How is Heroes star Ali Larter spending her time in NYC? “I love walking through Washington Square, watching people play chess,” the Jersey girl says. “I love going and sitting and having a Bellini. I love walking the streets. I think it’s the best city in the world.”

Gossip Girl star Kelly Rutherford says gossip serves a purpose.

“I think so much of gossip is affirming that we’re not alone,” the mom of one says. “I think everyone gossips on a certain level. I think gossip has been in fashion forever, and for that reason.”

What advice would she give kids who struggle with rumors?

“Don’t let it affect your view of the world,” Leighton Meester’s costar says. “Know that you will get past school and do great things. It usually means there’s a reason you’re standing out. It usually means you’re special. If people are gossiping about you, it usually means there’s something good going on. Take it as a compliment and run with it.”

E!’s Giuliana Rancic can’t wait to host the event. “I’m inspired to be here with all these strong, incredible women that I wish I was like,” the self-confessed news junkie says. “I can’t believe I’m going to be in a room with all these women. Put Christiane Amanpour in front of me and I’m going to pass out and die. I’m getting nervous just thinking about it. It’s nerve-wracking.”

It turns out Oprah Winfrey is BFF Gayle King’s answer to everything. “When you look at the lists, who would you like to have a lunch with? Who would you like to be stranded on a desert island with? Who would you like to do business with? Who do you most admire? Who is the most powerful? The answer always seems to be one thing, and that would be Oprah. Oprah Winfrey,” Gayle says.

Jill Hennessy
isn’t worried about popping out of her slinky dress even though she’s not wearing double-stick tape.

“I am nursing but I was never that bodacious to begin with,” she says of her Cynthia Rowley number. “Maybe I have the small-chested woman’s mentality where ‘oh that’s not going to happen.’”

Why do she and her hubby make a good couple?

“I don’t know that we do!” she tells me. “We just sort of hang out. We’ve been hanging out for fourteen years now.”

Brady Bunch star Florence Henderson starts out with a compliment. “Ladies, you all look about twelve years old,” the onscreen mom of Maureen “Marcia Brady” McCormick says. She’s thrilled to be in a New York State of mind. “I love New York! Are you kidding? I lived here for years. I started on Broadway, that’s how my career began.”

Suze Orman tells me she won’t help celebs who are in financial trouble.

“When celebrities call me, and they want me to help them, I tell them I’m not their girl,” she tells me. “There’s plenty of people who can help you if you have millions and millions of dollars. But there’s very few people who want to deal with you if you have $50,000 in credit card debt. I focus on those people, and those people only.”

Who are Chelsea Lately host Chelsea Handler’s favorite guests?

She counts out Padma Lakshmi, Jenny McCarthy and Leah Remini as “girls who are outspoken and don’t care what they’re saying.” Get this! “There was one guy – the father from One Tree Hill – I went to say hello to him in the green room, and I was like ‘oh my gosh, who is that guy? Forget about the interview. Let’s go out for dinner.’”

Star Jones, though, makes the opposite list for most annoying. “She doesn’t stop talking and has nothing to say.”

Ouch!
