Forget an Oscar! Samuel L. Jackson was honored with a more important honor on Saturday – the “Gift of Life” Humanitarian Award at the National Kidney Foundation.

The actor and his wife LaTanya Richardson were recognized for their dedication to the prevention and cure of pediatric kidney disease, a cause they’ve been at the forefront of since learning their niece needed a kidney transplant.

“We started to make connections and get educated about the process and helping our family through our knowledge,” he tells OK!. “All of a sudden, our niece was able to find a cousin who finally got screened and get a kidney and now she’s sort of a walking miracle for all of us because she’d been sick for a long time.”

Since her transplant, his niece is now “doing great” and the 59-year-old actor is now focused on raising more awareness for kidney-related diseases with George Lopez, who famously received a kidney transplant from his wife Ann.

“We found out about George and started getting involved in the Kidney Foundation, we got more involved and found that it wasn’t as hopeless as people made it seem all along and we started to work with him and make connections,” Samuel says.

As for George and Ann, the couple, who hosted the event for the third year, have a new lease on life.

“Since we’ve had our operation, we’ve really learned to appreciate our lives more," George tells OK!. " You know, I never know how long this kidney’s gonna last so I just enjoy every day.”

It was a happy reunion on Thursday for comedian George Lopez and his TV wife, Constance Marie (The George Lopez Show). The pair, along with Lopez’s real life wife, Ann, joined Jennie Garth, Andy Garcia and others as part of ‘Keep it Hollywood,’ an event to promote World Kidney Day in L.A.

The stars participated at stations set up to check blood pressure levels and blood sugar levels, as well as helping to raise awareness about the dangers of kidney disease.

"It’s one of the things that we’re all getting tested for," said former 90210′and Dancing With the Stars alum Jennie Garth. "It’s great to raise awareness for people. Early detection is the key to preventing and managing any disease."

Kidney health is a cause near and dear to hunky Ocean’s star Andy Garcia’s heart, who tells OK! he showed up to support his friend, George Lopez . "I’ve had friends who suffer from diabetes and some who have died from diabetes, so it’s something that I’m very much aware of, and George is a good friend of mine," Garcia tells OK!. "As you know, he’s had issues with his kidneys and stuff like that so, yeah, I think that we’re all affected by it in one way or another."

Lopez, who has battled kidney disease all of his life, underwent a kidney transplant in 2005, after his wife, Ann, donated one of her own to save his life.

Stacy Keibler Won’t Be Tied Down

November 12th, 2007 / Author: OK! Staff

It’s been two years since wrestler-turned-actress Stacy
Keibler
began dating 7th Heaven hunk Geoff Stults, but an engagement is still
far off.

Replying with a firm “no” when asked of future wedding
bells, Stacey tells OK! the couple is perfectly content where they’re at and
clues us in on their relationship secret.

“Communication,” she tells OK! at the National Kidney
Foundation of Southern California Great Chefs event. “We have our own lives that we bring together. We both have a
lot of things going on.”

That’s for certain — Geoff, her “best friend,” is on October
Road
, which returns to ABC on Nov. 26, and Stacy is revving up her
acting career after calling it a day in wrestling last year. The 28-year-old
has already racked up credits on The Comebacks, What About Brian and The George
Lopez Show
thus far, the latter of which proved to be a very rewarding
experience.

“We were all sitting around the stage and rehearsing and George said, ‘I’m bored.
Who wants some shoes?’ ” Stacy says, “So he got everyone a pair of Vans!
Everyone had a different style depending upon their personality. It was great.
It made everyone’s spirits go up. I got plaid ones. They were cool.”

George Lopez and Wife Share Laughs, Kidneys

November 12th, 2007 / Author: cwillett

Most couples are attached at the hip, but for George Lopez
and his wife, Ann, they’re attached at the kidneys.

Ann famously donated a kidney to her husband two years ago
and the comedian is forever grateful to his wife for her “generous gift,” he
tells OK! at the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California Great Chefs event on
Sunday. The two, who are spokepeople for the organization, hosted the affair
alongside Mario Lopez and Stacy Keibler and believe it’s important to give
back and raise awareness for the cause.

“If I didn’t do anything I would feel like I would have been
turning my back on people for prevention and awareness and raising funds,”
George tells OK!.

The couple also earned praised and admiration from their
co-hosts for their passionate involvement. “What they’ve done shows
unconditional love that she went through that for him,” Stacy tells OK!.

Adds Mario, “They’re raising awareness and money, and I’m
happy to be a part of it.”

George suffered from a genetic condition that caused his
kidneys to deteriorate and would have died had his wife of now 14 years not
offered one of hers for a transplant.

“As a living donor, it was easier than giving birth,” Ann
says.

On his end, the 46-year-old jokes the procedure is “less
painful than getting caught in your zipper. That hurts!”

Since the April 2005 operation, George and Ann, who have a
12-year-old daughter together, have been undoubtedly healthier and supposedly
more like-minded.

“When someone gives you a kidney, the last thing you’re
going to do is nitpick at them!” George laughs.
