Stars Step Out For L’Oreal Legends Gala

November 17th, 2008

It’s high drama for the L’Oreal Legends Gala, benefiting the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, held at the opulent American Museum of Natural History in NYC. The event raises $4.3 million to fight the killer through ticket sales and silent auction.

Dapper Pierce Brosnan, who is arm-in-arm with wife Keeley, has a lilting Irish accent and tells a heartwrenching story about how he lost his first wife to ovarian cancer. What does he think of celeb activism?

“If you have a passion and a desire and a want and the willpower of mind to do good things, then you should go out there and do it and not be crushed by anybody who says otherwise,” he says. “There will always be people that will knock you down because you’re an actor or you’re a celebrity, but ultimately if something touches your heart and is crucial to your life force, then speak up.”

What makes Keeley beautiful? “Her kindness, her love, intelligence, humor and grace,” he tells me.

Milla Jovovich is jovial, and gushes about her daughter Ever. What’s their favorite mommy-and-me activity? Well, Europe.

“When we’re in Europe, we like to go and walk around, which is really fun, because in L.A. she gets carsick,” she says. “It’s really hard because you have to get in a car to do stuff, so that’s tricky for us right now. But every time I travel with her abroad, it’s amazing because we can just walk around and she loves to see people. We always go to the park, but we have a beautiful property in L.A. that’s like a park. We invite her little friends, we go to gym class. Just to play with her! I love to just sit in the family room and play with her. I mean, read Russian stories to her. She’ll bring me her book and she’ll plop down and we’ll read together. It’s amazing.”

Here comes Lanvin-wearing Linda Evangelista, who describes her style as “confused” before taking issue with the cameraman, asking how close he’s shooting her. “You look fine,” he assures her. “Do I look fine, or fabulous?” she icily responds, supermodel-style.

And, how does Kerry Washington like to indulge? “I’m a real massage girl,” she says. “I could literally get a massage every night for the rest of my life, and it wouldn’t be enough.”

Andie McDowell introduces me to daughter Rainey. What happened on her first modeling job? “I worked for Women’s Wear Daily. I showed up, and I didn‘t know at all what to do. I didn’t look like a model. I had no makeup on, a t-shirt and jeans because I didn’t have any money. But I worked very, very hard, and by the end of the job, they only used me because I cared so much and worked so hard.”

The actress wasn’t always living a lush life fit for a fashionista. “I grew up kind of poor in South Carolina, so I didn’t know what was going on. I was not a real fashion savvy child because I wasn’t exposed to that culture. I didn’t know anything about fashion until I was in New York, learning by the seat of my pants.”

Here’s Harvey Weinstein with his Marchesa-designer wife Georgina Chapman. What makes Georgina beautiful? “That she wears L’Oreal. She likes L’Oreal. What do you think I’m going to say?” Bahdum-bum!

Time for dinner. On the menu tonight is braised beef short ribs and filet duo; horseradish whipped potatoes; and a mélange of fall vegetables. Diane Keaton gives a tribute to an outgoing executive, saying “Life is about moving on.” Smart! The take home gift bag includes L’Oreal goodies – for men and women — in addition to a silk tie, umbrella and Lord and Taylor gift certificate. Sweet!

Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem Step Out For ‘Vicky’

August 14th, 2008

Penelope Cruz glitzes into the special screening of Vicky Cristina Barcelona held at Cinema 2 in NYC. The 34-year-old stunner is glamorous at every turn, and speaks with a thick accent. She appears in the Woody Allen dramedy about three women – Penelope, Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall – who fall in love with the same man during a vacation in Spain.

“She’s somebody who is very unstable,” Penelope says of her character. “She’s damaged. She wants to create something.”

What does she draw on from her own life when playing such a complicated role?

“You go through verses when you are preparing for your character and during interviews people ask you how you prepared for your character,” she says. “For me, I have my own system and it works every time in every movie. I think you always feel a little bit pretentious when you hear that question.”

She gets flustered when asked if she’s complicated.

Javier Bardem
returns to the familiar by acting with Penelope.  “Everybody changes I guess. I haven’t acted with her in fifteen years!”

Patricia Clarkson calls Woody “a tremendous talent.”

Here is designer Tara Subkoff to dish on the recent kiss between Danity Kane’s Aubrey O’Day and Lydia Hearst caught on vid.

She tells me it will appear in an ad for her Bebe line, Tara Subkoff for Bebe, which will be in stores September 1. She says the clothes range from “sexy” to “forgiving” and are perfect for everyone from high schoolers to grandmothers.

Tara says Aubrey is not part of the campaign – just Lydia.

“I think they did that to get more paparazzi. I wanted to get the point of view of their point of view.”

Why is Lyd perfect for the line?

“She really looks like the Marlena Dietrich of her time. She’s gorgeous, she’s iconic.”

And, what does she think of Aubrey?

“No comment, I don’t know her but I’m interested to find out.”

The lights dim as Carla Gugino, Zoe Kravitz, Geogina Chapman and Harvey Weinstein and stylist Phillip Bloch enter the theater. On with the show!

Vicky Cristina Barcelona is in theaters Friday.

Stars celebrate Thanksgiving with parade, family and food

November 22nd, 2007 / Author: Valerie Nome

For Thanksgiving, being with family is the top priority on every celeb’s list.

“I am doing the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, so I will be in New York,” Jordin Sparks tells me. “And then, right after I perform, I’m hopping on a plane and going home so I can spend time with my family and eat and watch football.”

Joey Fatone plans to watch the parade with his family in NYC.

Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford will go back to Dallas to see his family. “We’ll do a lot of eating, and maybe watch the Cowboys football game,” he says.

Heidi Klum tells me she will be celebrating her son Johan’s first birthday. “I’m going to be doing a big turkey with a happy birthday candle on top of the turkey, which I just got at the supermarket. They have those ones where each letter is separate, and they have spikes. It’s going to be sitting on the turkey this year. It’s going to be a funny turkey.”

Jessica Alba can’t wait to eat candied yams and mashed potatoes; Georgina Chapman wants to drink champagne; Ashanti is dreaming of fried turkey, cabbage, corn bread, rice and peas; Chris Brown is dreaming of turkey and yams.

“Picking the pieces off the turkey before it actually gets onto the platter” is something Jason Lewis looks forward to all year.

“I love the cranberry sauce from the jar,” Jamie Lynn Sigler says. “I love that. I live for it. My family only gets it for me because nobodyy else eats it, but that’s my favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal.”

Reba McEntire tells me she’ll wear an apron this year. “I have a hamburger bean dish and Mexican cornbread that I like to cook. That’s my contribution. Not very Thanksgivingishy, but I like it.”

“I like to make dessert,” Mya says. “I make apple blueberry pie every Thanksgiving. I make it with fresh apples and blueberries – that’s actually the filling. Brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg. That’s really great.”

“I make pumpkin pie and apple pie,” Abigail Breslin says. “My mom taught me how to do that. Usually we get pumpkin stuffed in a can at the store and put it in and make it. She’s a good cook.”

Everyone loves to watch the Macy’s parade.

“I do the cooking, and our good friends, my goddaughter and her family, come over,” Deborah Norville tells me. “Sometimes we get a third family, but it’s always the same two families. I’m in my pajamas all morning, and I’m cooking. I time my dinner based on where the Macy’s parade is. If Santa Claus is coming across the finish line and certain things haven’t happened? Then we’re late. The turkey’s not going to be ready, the sweet potatoes are going to be mushy, something will go wrong. I have to pace myself on the Santa Claus parade.”
