Patrick & Lisa: Soaring High Together

March 28th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

Actor Patrick Swayze, who recently revealed that he is battling pancreatic cancer, is already receiving the best medical care available, and the outpouring of public sympathy has surely boosted his spirits. But what’s really lifting the Ghost star in this tough time are the hours he spends aloft in his private plane with his wife of 33 years, Lisa Niemi.

In addition to their flights to and from Stanford University Medical Center for Patrick’s chemotherapy, the couple, both licensed and experienced pilots, have been flying the friendly skies together as much as possible.

"Patrick and Lisa share two great passions: planes and horses," one insider explains to OK!. "And being able to do what they love most — and do it together — is helping them to remain as optimistic as posssible."

The Swayzes love flying so much that in only one day last week, the couple hopped around California and Nevada for over 11 hours in their 11-seat Beechcraft Super King Air 200. Starting out in Van Nuys, they made a brief jaunt to Daugherty Field in Long Beach, Calif., before heading up the coast to the scenic Monterey Peninsula.

But that wasn’t the end of their travels — over the next several hours they flew five more times, including a quick stopover in Las Vegas. A rep for Patrick confirms to OK! that, for now, it is Lisa who is doing the flying.

Ironically, the Swayzes almost had a brush with the immortal in 2006 when their other plane, a Cessna 414a, was forced to make an emergency landing after the plane’s right engine lost power en route to their horse ranch in New Mexico.

This is the same plane that, in 2000, Patrick landed on a dirt road in an under-construction housing development in Arizona after experiencing problems with cabin pressure.

New Hope for Patrick

March 26th, 2008

Patrick Swayze’s strong physique may be his greatest weapon in his fight against pancreatic cancer. The 55-year-old actor has been given new hope after finding out that the drug he’s taking to fight his illness responds better to people who are physically fit.

"The drug that Patrick Swayze is taking, Vatalanib, is still in the experimental stage," Dr. M. Wasif Saif, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Gastrointestinal Program at Yale Universtiy tells OK!. "But recent studies have shown promise for patients taking the drug who are in excellent physical shape."

Patrick’s strength comes from years of horse riding and his dance training at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. East Valley Feed and Tack owner John Fusano tells OK!, "Patrick orders supplies for his horses from us. I haven’t seen him in a while, but he’s a strapping giant of a man. He’s got tree trunks for legs!"

OK! Exclusive: Swayze Not Headed Back to Work

March 6th, 2008

While everyone in Hollywood is pulling for Patrick Swayze to recover, OK! has exclusively learned that rumors he is currently at work while fighting cancer are not true.

Reports have Swayze playing the role of a gay cheerleading instructor in the romantic comedy Fired Up!, but a rep for producers of the film (currently filming in Los Angeles) say that although Swayze was once attached to the film, he withdrew from the film “three weeks to a month ago.” The role is currently being played by John Michael Higgins (Wag the Dog).

Whoopi Owes Her Oscar to Patrick Swayze

March 6th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

On The View this morning, Whoopi Goldberg talked about working with Patrick Swayze, who confirmed yesterday that he’s battling pancreatic cancer, in their 1990 hit movie, Ghost.

”When I won my Academy Award, the only person I really thanked was Patrick," she explained. Whoopi won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as a psychic, Oda Mae Brown, communicating with the ghost of Sam Wheat (played by Patrick) in the film.

She also said that Patrick was the driving force behind her being cast in the film. He convinced director Jerry Zucker to put Whoopi in the movie. Whoopi said that Patrick told him, ”I’m not making this movie unless you put Whoopi Goldberg in there.”

Although she has not yet spoken with Patrick, she said, ”We want you to feel better — we’ll talk soon, I hope."

Patrick Swayze Diagnosed With Pancreatic Cancer

March 5th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

Actor Patrick Swayze, the light-footed star who made women everywhere swoon with his portrayal of a hunky but sensitive dance instructor in Dirty Dancing and as a murdered man determined to solve the mystery of his own death in Ghost, is now about to begin the fight of his life.

On Wednesday, the actor’s rep confirmed to OK! that Swayze has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The statement reads:

"Actor Patrick Swayze has been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. Patrick’s physician, Dr. George Fisher states, ‘Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far. All of the reports stating the timeframe of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic.’ Patrick is continuing his normal schedule during this time, which includes working on upcoming projects. The outpouring of support and concern he has already received from the public is deeply appreciated by Patrick and his family.”

Swayze was diagnosed with the cancer more than a month ago.

The average life expectancy is six to nine months, with only 4 percent of patients living more than five years.
