Gwyneth Gets Goop-y on Frenemies

April 16th, 2009

It seems even Gwyneth Paltrow has had her share of fair-weathered friends. In this week’s GOOP newsletter, the Oscar winning actress addresses the topic of gossip and why people feel the need to tear others down in order to make themselves feel better.

Ok – sounds a little preachy, we know. But Gwynnie also reveals she too has been a  victim, telling readers that she had a "frenemie" who was "hell bent on taking me down back in the day."

Hmm! And we thought it was just the public who hated the Iron Man star!

Gwyneth writes, "Back in the day, I had a ‘frenemy’ who, as it turned out, was pretty hell-bent on taking me down. This person really did what they could to hurt me. I was deeply upset, I was angry, I was all of those things you feel when you find out that someone you thought you liked was venomous and dangerous.

I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and…happiness. There went the high road. So, why does it feel so good to hear something bad about someone you don’t like? Or someone you DO like? Or someone you don’t KNOW?"

Gwyneth then supplies her usual list of gurus who give their "professional" explanations. But what we want to know is: Who was this mysterious "frenemie?" We have our suspicions, but it’s so much more fun to hear what you think!

Did Gwyneth Steal GOOP Idea?

March 5th, 2009

It was bound to happen. Gwyneth Paltrow’s weekly newsletter, GOOP.com, has been getting so much press (mostly negative) lately that this almost doesn’t come as a surprise.

The New York Post is reporting that a Columbia-based writer claims the Oscar winning actress copied her idea for a weekly "lifestyle" newsletter. Mary Kent Hearon says Gwyneth’s GOOP is a copycat version of her website, WeeklyBeet.com, which she started in 2004.

Hearon, 34, an artist, writer and nutritionist, says she attended school with Gwyneth’s best friend at Trinity College. Through that connection, she landed a meeting with the actress in a London restaurant in order to pitch her own website, the WeeklyBeet.

Gwyneth’s camp denies the accusations, according to the Post’s Page Six.

Hearon released a statement in which she says, "I am shocked that someone whom I looked up to and so admired for her openness about alternative medicine, a) treated me very rudely, and b) proceeded to produce a concept which, in my opinion, is similar to The Beet, especially after being asked to bless mine. That to me is not light!"

Asked what she would do now, Hearon said she would “keep doing the Beet, that’s what I do.”

Gwyneth Paltrow to Write Cookbook

February 4th, 2009

Gwyneth Paltrow is branching out all over the place these days. First she started her own lifestyle newsletter, GOOP, dedicated to nourishing the inner aspect. Now the Oscar-winning actress has plans to publish her first cookbook, sweetly titled, My Father’s Daughter.

According to publishers Janklow & Nesbit, the book will focus on the importance of togetherness at mealtime, emphasizing that cooking for your family is the ultimate expression of love. All the recipes have been designed with the entire family in mind.

The tentative publication date is slated for fall, 2010.

Gwyneth, 36, has said that she really got into cooking after the birth of her daughter in 2004. The once glamour-girl seen at the trendiest parties says she’s now more content to play housewife for her husband, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, and their children, Apple, 4, and Moses, 2.

Gwyneth also says she gets her love of cooking from her dad, Bruce Paltrow, who died in 2002 from throat cancer.

"My dad was a famous pancake maker and I’m working on [adapting his] recipe right now," she said. "I’m making mine slightly healthier."

Last fall, Gwyneth embarked on a road trip with chef Mario Batali, where the two explored and tasted their way through Spain. The trip was filmed for a PBS series Spain: On the Road Again.

Gwyneth Gets Even

February 2nd, 2009

Gwyneth Paltrow wants to get a few things off her chest. First, she’s aware of the negative reviews her new web site, GOOP, has received from critics, and she’s not taking them lying down.

"F**k the haters! I saw this blog of people writing horrible things about me and, for a second, your ego is so wounded," Paltrow, 36, says in the March issue of Elle UK. "How could people hate me, my intentions or what I’m trying to do? I’m a good person and I’m trying to put good things into the world."

Paltrow may be obsessed with ‘nourishing the inner aspect,’ and it’s a reputation she’s known for touting. But if you think she’s a prude, think again.

"I’m probably less square than people think," she insists. "I never get drunk to the point of throwing up. But I get very talkative."

She also tells the mag she misses her days as a smoker. "Man, I wish smoking didn’t kill you," she reveals. "I’d be smoking right now. I miss it."

Another beaten subject that just won’t seem to die is the state of her relationship with husband Chris Martin. When asked why they are never pictured together, Paltrow says, "It doesn’t behoove us to be a public couple. He certainly doesn’t want to be that."

She adds, "I mean, we’ve never walked down a red carpet together, and we never will."

The March issue of Elle UK hits stands tomorrow.

Gwyneth’s Reading List

January 23rd, 2009

In this week’s GOOP, Gwyneth Paltrow’s newsletter dedicated to "nourishing the inner aspect," the Oscar-winner shares her favorite books, and asks a few of her famous friends (Madonna!) to pony up what they’re reading right now as well.

Gwyneth writes, "I feel a bit swallowed up in January, the days are so short, the sky is so close and gray. The best way to escape (not to mention the least expensive, most hassle-free way) is to curl up by the fire with an amazing, transportive novel."

When it comes to her favorite reads, Gwyneth lists Jane Eyre, Crime and Punishment, and The Sheltering Sky, which she credits Ethan Hawke for introducing her to when they made the film Great Expectations in 1995.

"I was feeling a bit in shock about what was happening with my life," she writes. "I hadn’t found grace yet with the big changes that were afoot. Ethan correctly intuited that I needed some perspective, some grounding, a sort of literary bringing down to size. He gave me few of his favorite novels and this masterpiece was one of them."

Gwynnie also enlisted the help of some of her famous pals–who offered up some of their favorite books.

Madonna, who Gwyneth describes as "rules the world, is a loyal friend and a terrific mother," listed The Bad Girl by Mario Vargas Llosa, Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, and The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

Christy Turlington listed Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, and The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.
