Johnny Depp’s Touching Tribute to Ledger

June 1st, 2009

Johnny Depp names parts of his private island after the most important people in his life: his wife, Vanessa and his children, Lily Rose and Jack.

And, it has just been revealed, one special spot is touchingly dedicated to Heath Ledger.

According to a Vanity Fair article, Depp — who took on Ledger’s role in a movie after his death in 2008 — dubbed a stretch of water on Little Hall’s Pond Cay island "Heath’s Place" for the tragic Dark Knight actor.

Heath is not the only one of Depp’s pals to be memorialized: there is a cove named "Gonzo Beach" after the style of journalism pioneered by his friend and hero, Hunter S. Thompson, who died in 2005.

But it seems that not all of Depp’s fellow actors are regarded with such reverence: in the story, to be published in the issue available June 3, he says that Tom Cruise’s goofy cameo as a dancing Hollywood exec in Tropic Thunder is his best work.

"That’s the best I’ve ever seen Cruise," the Pirates of the Caribbean star tells the magazine.

We can’t see Tom taking that as a compliment!

Johnny, Jude Law and Colin Farrell jointly took over Heath’s role in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, with all three actors donating their paychecks to his daughter, Matilda.

Heath’s Friends Present His Final Role

May 22nd, 2009

Heath Ledger’s last role in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was an unfinished one, but his co-stars and other friends rallied to complete it in honor  of the late actor. Director Terry Gilliam told the audience at its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival that Heath’s zeal and dedication inspired those around him.

"Heath was enjoying himself so much, and he was ad-libbing a lot, which I don’t normally allow … but Heath was just brilliant at it, and he got everybody else going," Gilliam said. "Everybody was just energized by Heath. He was extraordinary. He was almost exhausting because he had so much energy."

Heath’s inexhaustible energy affect everyone else, Gilliam added.

"That just passed on to everyone else. Everyone’s part grew because they were full of Heath’s energy," he said."What I thought was interesting was to watch people filling the void that Heath left. Everybody was just growing to make sure that there was no void left in the space that Heath had left us."

After Heath’s death to an accidental overdose of prescription drugs, the filmmakers had to scramble to figure out how to complete his unfinished work.

"Fortunately, I was surrounded by really good people who insisted that I couldn’t be such a lazy bastard and that we had to go out and find a way of finishing the film for Heath," Gilliam said of casting Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell to play incarnations of Heath during otherworldly portions of the fantasy film.

"This is the movie Heath wanted to see, and this is the movie that we will do. And I hope he would be pleased with it. I think he would be," added Gilliam.

The movie closes with the dedication: "A film from Heath Ledger and friends.

Mel Gibson Talks About Counseling Britney

February 23rd, 2009

Last March, while Britney Spears was just beginning to live under the control of her father’s court-ordered conservatorship, she made headlines yet again when she met with fellow scandal magnet Mel Gibson for a private chat over dinner in L.A..

And then in May 2008, Britney joined Mel and his family on vacation in Costa Rica.

On Sunday night’s special post-Oscar edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Mel opened up about what moved him to reach out to the troubled pop star.

"She’s a nice kid, ya know. She was just going through a rough patch," he explained. "You see kids that you know in the industry… I just felt like this poor kid she’s lining up to be stoned. I just thought, ‘I wonder if anyone is reaching out to her,’ so I just called her and she’s doing great now."

But Mel was not willing to take any of the credit for Britney’s remarkable turnaround in the months since.

"It’s got nothing to do with me," he said. "She pulled herself out of this, and her dad… he’s the real hero."

Meanwhile, Mel still harbors regrets that he didn’t reach out to fellow Aussie actor, the late Heath Ledger.

"I shoulda called him years before," he confessed to Jimmy. "I didn’t really know the ins and outs of what was up with him, but I don’t believe it was just an accident. Maybe I coulda called him… When you see sort of an impending tragedy or something that might go wrong, it just felt like I should do something about it."
