Rihanna, More Get Tongues Wagging

May 5th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Rihanna puts on a show of strength Monday, arriving last for the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit dubbed “The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion.”

“Dolce and Gabbana,” the Barbados-born singer says, uttering her first words to the media since her Grammy-day beating by then-boyfriend Chris Brown.

She’s not the only one putting the past behind her. Earlier in the evening, Katie Lee Joel and hubby Billy Joel bide their time in the center aisle looking lovey-dovey for the press. She faced rumors of an affair with designer Yigal Azrouel last month.

And glasses-wearing Justin Timberlake makes a mad dash for the entrance while Jessica Biel waves glamorously looking radiant in red Versace, putting the brakes on breakup buzz.

Shocking! Eva Mendes gives Amber Valletta a lingering kiss on the lips, and then cops a feel of the model’s backside. Hm, could they be making a statement without saying a word?

Madonna, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Kirsten Dunst, Victoria Beckham, Elizabeth Hurley, Helena Christensen, Kate Beckinsale, Rachel Weisz, Cindy Crawford, Kanye West, Kate Bosworth, Jessica Alba and Bono glide through.

SEE PHOTOS FROM THE 2009 MET GALA:

Gisele
lingers outside the venue wearing a sparkly Versace dress and Fin earrings. And the ring is from where? “From my husband,” she shouts, as Tom Brady heads inside. What does she love about her dress? “I like blue!”

Gossip Girl
stars Blake Lively and Penn Badgely gamely interview together, but Jessica Szohr laps up the spotlight sans Ed Westwick.

“I got ready in the bathroom at the Four Seasons Hotel, but I wasn’t staying there,” Jessica says. “I had a meeting there before, and my publicist is helping me pull it together. I’m like ‘suck it in!’”

The Trumps are all in a row. How did the family of three get ready? “We just got up and got dressed, and we got here,” Donald says.

Melania tells me, “He loves the dress. He likes what I’m wearing. It’s that simple.”

How did Ivanka choose her Brian Reyes frock? “It felt very feminine and very young,” she says. “It was a nice compliment.”

Friendly Katy Perry can’t hide her excitement. “I feel like Cleopatra, and also I got my hair cut like Anna Wintour, so she’ll like me,” she says. (Anna’s here with daughter Bee.) “No, I got it cut in December. It’s a joke.”

Andre Leon Talley
calls out Michelle Obama as his muse. “She’s appropriately dressed, and also she’s modern and she takes risks,” he tells me.

Meanwhile, Michelle O’s go-to designer Jason Wu admires Jessica Alba for fitting into a sample size less than a year after the birth of daughter Honor. “She’s multitasking, and she’s a great one at that,” he says.

Elizabeth Banks says “I love how girly and fun it is!” of her Alberta Ferretti number.

Andy Roddick’s wife Brooklyn ?Decker is loving the newlywed life. “It’s wonderful and great,” she tells me, adding that Andy didn’t pick out her Derek Lam pantsuit because he’s training. “He said not to wear pants. He said ‘it’s the Met, you can’t wear pants!’ But I was like ‘this is cool and a little unusual for the Met,’ so I’m very excited to wear it.”

Kiefer Sutherland steps out for a smoke break. When told he looks dapper by the E! reporter, he modestly says, “No, I don’t. Liar! Bless your heart.”

Katie Lee Joel Adds Intrigue

April 22nd, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Even with Bono, Bill Clinton, Jon Bon Jovi, Mariska Hargitay, Jimmy Fallon and Rachael Ray attending the Food Bank for New York City’s Can-Do Awards Dinner held Tuesday at Abigail Kirsch’s Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers, Katie Lee Joel is the biggest get of the night amid rumors of her affair with designer Yigal Azrouel.

The usually chatty chef married to Billy Joel is rushed through the press area for the first time in her life.

“Sorry, we have to pull her,” the rep says as Katie dodges reporters.

It’s a much different scenario than my experience last month when Katie was promoting ScottsMiracle-Gro GroGood campaign. She shared a pointed life lesson with me.

“Just do unto others as they’ll do unto you,” Katie told me March 18. “Treat people the way that you want to be treated.”

Time changes everything, and at tonight’s Food Bank Can-Do Awards Mariska Hargitay is rejoicing after suffering a collapsed lung earlier this year. How is she feeling?

“Much better,” Mariska says.

Jon Bon Jovi is bashful about being honored tonight.

“It’s humbling,” the brown eyeliner-wearing rocker says. “It was difficult for me to accept it, simply because when you’re doing something out of the goodness of your heart for as many years as this whole foundation has been building houses, we really don’t look for the accolades.”

What does he have to say about the dead dolphin found outside his home?

“He was trying to cross the hill to get to the house,” he jokes. “He thought he was a Miami Dolphin, you know?”

Being in the presence of this New Jersey icon makes Rachael Ray weak in the knees.

“I sang every song into a hairbrush, and isn’t that the appropriate way to celebrate Bon Jovi?” the food host yuks.

How does the Dunkin Donuts pitchwoman – who didn’t get her free iced coffee that day — encourage others to eat healthy?

“It’s very easy to eat very well, and it’s getting more affordable, thank God,” Rachael says in her raspy voice. “If you like to eat healthy, buy locally grown, go to Farmer’s Markets – it’s the last bargain left in food — and if you want to feel better about eating pasta, my favorite food group, switch over to whole grain. It’s full of fiber and protein.”

Jimmy Fallon confesses his love for Fig Newtons and vanilla ice cream. “Yeah!” his jovial wife Nancy Juvonen says. “By the way, the other thing that’s fantastic is grape nuts and vanilla ice cream. I’m not kidding. You’ll flip out.”

We spot Alan Wyse, Kim Cattrall’s boyfriend, who dishes on his SATC love, and Gwyneth Paltrow’s BFF Mario Batali, who is wearing orange crocs.

Here is Helena Christensen, who broke her front tooth Monday. Ouch! Who is the cutest baby in Hollywood? “The cutest baby is not in Hollywood,” she says in her Dutch accent. “The cutest baby’s in my girlfriend’s belly over there.” Aww!

While Emeril Lagasse doesn’t watch American Idol, he does have a reality show in mind.

“My reality show is basically you get a bunch of celebrities, and you all get on a scale and you weigh them. Whoever weighs the most at the end of the show, at the end of the series, they win. Wouldn’t that be a cool series? Just eat galore.”

Psst. The very-married chef is crushing on Britain’s Got Talent dynamo Susan Boyle. Ooh!

“She seems like a pretty cool lady,” he tells me.

Stars Step Out For ‘Australia’

November 26th, 2008

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban are greeted by shrieks when they arrive at 6:20 p.m. for the Australia premiere held at NYC’s Ziegfeld Theatre.

Why should we see this epic World War II drama shot in the Northern Territory and Western Australia – featured in my Australia travel story in the OK! out now?

“It celebrates love and it celebrates life, and I think that sort of thing is good for the world right now,” Sunday Rose’s mom says, with hubby Keith on her arm.

Heavily pregnant Naomi Watts, Famke Janssen, Helena Christensen, John Leguizamo, Padma Lakshmi and Ashleigh Banfield troll through. Lydia Hearst and Kelsey Grammer chat.

Here’s Olivia Newton-John, who is lovingly holding hubby John Easterling. What does she miss most about Australia?

“The bird songs in the air because there are more species of birds – and you don’t realize until you leave there – how much song there is in the air that you don’t hear here and you don’t hear anywhere else,” she tells me. “There’s a sense of freedom and beauty in Australia that there is nowhere else.”

Hugh Jackman waves, and wife Deborra-Lee Furness jokes about his swelling ego. “I always thought he was the sexiest man alive,” she laughs.

Director Baz (rhymes with “jazz,” his rep says - ha!) Luhrmann reveals a precious moment he shared with Nicole.

“There’s a big scene that happens under that boab tree, and I bring it back to do close-ups,” he says. “She said to me [flails hands] … Whenever she does this thing with her hands, it’s like she has a fan. I’m like ‘yes, dear one?’ She said ‘I’m pregnant.’ And she burst into tears. I was tearful, too.”

How has Nicole changed since she welcomed daughter Sunday Rose in July?

“She’s changed, but she doesn’t change,” Baz reveals. “She grows, she matures, she learns, we learn, we become more mature with each other. She cuts to the chase more. Time wasting is the greatest lesson of life, I think. How not to waste time, because it’s the most precious commodity.”

Australia is in theaters now.

And, pick up the OK! out now (cover line: “Reese Witherspoon: Back On Top!”) to read about my Australian Outback adventure pegged to the sights you’ll see in this film.

My trip to Northern Territory and Western Australia was out of this world. I stayed in wildlife luxury accommodations such as Bamurru Plains (it was see-through, but they said the animals couldn’t see inside), Bullo River Station, El Questro Homestead (Kylie Minogue’s favorite. I could ’ve spent the rest of my life in their Zebedee Springs!), Home Valley Station and Moonshadow Villas.

My trip was jampacked with scenic cruises, crocodile spotting, waterfall swims, private planes, helicopter flights, horseback riding and Aboriginal art. And, I ate crocodile and saw wallabys. I greatly enjoyed the pink diamonds at Kimberley Fine Diamonds in Kununurra. Hugh Jackman even went crocodile-spotting at the owner’s home. Loved it!

Chloe Sevigny, Selita Ebanks Do ACE Awards

November 13th, 2008

Fashionistas make their way to NYC’s Cipriani 42nd Street for the ACE Awards, sponsored by the Accessories Council.

Helena Christensen and Stella McCartney swan in, and here’s Chloe Sevigny, who gives her tips for looking good at parties.

“Being confident,” she tells me. “Wearing a nice heel that you’re going to be comfortable in.”

Hey Chrissie Hynde, what do you think now when you go back to Ohio? After all, the Akron native is known for the line “I went back to Ohio but my city was gone” from her 1982 ditty My City Was Gone. “What does that have to do with this?” she fumes. Um, I’m writing a story about the event? “Oh, I don’t know what you mean,” she says, clearly flustered, as she walks away.

Whew! I’m from Ohio – Akron even – and I would say I’m upset that they closed the Ponderosa where I waitressed and buffeted during high school and college. Also holidays aren’t the same since they took away Archie The Snowman from Chapel Hill Mall, where I elfed during high school and college.

Not Chrissie.

Onto the next one! Desperate Housewives star Dana Delany tells me earrings make or break an outfit. “I never leave the house without earrings. I feel naked without my earrings. I like simple. I tend to wear the same earrings for years, so right now I’ve been wearing a pair of Cathy Waterman earrings for probably about ten years.”

And how does Victoria’s Secret model Selita Ebanks look five pounds slimmer?

“Well, I cut my hair,” she tells me. “That definitely helps. I think it’s all about wearing things that compliment your body, and it’s always about a great heel. A great heel, a great shoe extends the leg and makes you seem longer and leaner. Or a belt. You cinch the waist. It’s all about that.”

And how does Tina Knowles, mom of Beyonce, dress up an outfit?

“Great accessories – some nice, sparkly earrings, beautiful bracelet,” she tells me. “Just accessories I would say, and your basic black dress that you can dress up with beautiful accessories.” She gives a shoutout to Lorraine Schwartz, whom she is  presenting an award tonight. “She is the most amazing jewelry designer. It’s so unique. Every piece is made with so much artistry. I mean, it’s like art.”

TomKat, Beckhams, Scarlett Step Out For Met Gala

May 19th, 2008

Scarlett Johansson shows off her engagement ring as she strides into the annual Costume Institute Gala during the superhero-themed soiree held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.

The 23-year-old beauty is the belle of the ball, and everyone including Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Eva Longoria Parker, TomKat, the Beckhams and more will congratulate her on the milestone.

Meanwhile, throngs of reporters are camped out on either side of the steps hoping to capture the attention of Hollywood’s brightest stars. Tom Cruise waves as Katie Homes beams while Julia Roberts, George Clooney and Sarah Larson make their way into the party.

How did regal-looking Victoria Beckham pick out her dress?

Mr. Armani picked it out for me,” Posh says, turning around before she goes into the event. “I love it.”

Fergie’s ponytail is in full swing as Donald Trump (and his hair) plus wife Melania and daughter Ivanka stroll through.

What superpower would Taylor Swift most enjoy?

“I’d want to see what people were thinking in a subtitle underneath what they were saying,” she says. “That would be fantastic.”

Diane Kruger’s inspiration for her dress is She-Ra, the Princess Warrior. “I feel very sexy.” Her boyfriend, Joshua Jackson, longs for the ability to fly. “Just to be able to get around the lines at the airport. It would shave hours off the trip.”

When Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively is asked what she would do if she lost her Ralph Lauren bracelet, her rep chimes in. “She’s very responsible. She never loses things.” Blake laughs nervously. Her rumored beau, Penn Badgely, says he needs to draw the line between his personal and private life. (Good move) But he agrees that Blake looks beautiful tonight.

Ellen Barkin and Lauren Hutton blush as they reveal their secrets to aging well. “I feel like I’m in high drag,” Lauren says. Chris Noth expresses an affinity for the Fantastic Four … Hayden Christensen (with Rachel Bilson) gives props to Superman … Amanda Peet is loving The Hulk … Mischa Barton’s favorite is Wonder Woman … and Emily Mortimer goes for Flash Gordon. “He’s the campest,” she says. Gossip Girl’s Ed Westwick prefers Batman. “He’s the only superhero that actually exists.”

Helena Christensen can’t wait to go inside.

“There’s something very magical about tonight,” she says.

Pick up the OK! on newsstands now for more coverage of the Costume Institute Gala. Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal/Ready To Wed is the cover line.

Stars Honor Their Moms

May 11th, 2008

Stars are giving thanks to their moms on this Mother’s Day.

“My mom always thought I’d be famous more than I did,” Clay Aiken tells me. “She was always sure that I was going to be famous and be a singer, et cetera, et cetera. I always wanted to be a teacher. She expected this of me before I did. I think she would tell you she’s not surprised, but I’m totally surprised.”

This year, Clay’s mom will be on a cruise, but he typically takes her out to dinner.

“She’s very particular about me buying her too much stuff. She doesn’t really like it too much. She’s a small-town lady.”

On the other hand, Carson Kressley likes to shower his mom with gifts.

“You should always get your mom something she totally doesn’t need because she made so many sacrifices for you,” he says. “I always try to treat her with a little bit of luxury. Maybe it’s amazing flowers or amazing bath stuff from Salno De Bano or even dinner. I might have her over to my house for dinner.”

Helena Christensen sings the praises of her mom, who is from Peru. “She’s the most amazing woman in the world. She’s so giving, caring, funny and crazy in the right way. Her taking care of my son helps me so much.”

What’s so great about Rachel McAdams’s mom?

“She has the best hot red hair. She’s got gorgeous, enviable, beautiful auburn red hair.”

Three Doors Down singer Brad Arnold gives props to his mom.

“My mom used to be a teacher’s aide and teachers aides don’t make that much money,” he tells me. “I’m the youngest of seven kids, and she put up money for a long time to buy me my first set of drums. They weren’t anything extravagant or anything, but I was proud of those things and she was proud for me to have them. Her and my daddy listened to me beat on those things for years and years and years.”

Mya tells me, “The best thing about my mom is how organized she is. I don’t want to limit her to organization, but she’s a fighter. She’s a survivor of breast cancer, so that’s one thing I could never do – give up on anything – through her lesson and her experience with breast cancer. She’s just a great mom.”

Happy Mother’s Day!

Helena Christensen: Model Mom

May 7th, 2008

Helena Christensen is a model mom to son Mingus, 7.  What is he into these days?

“Pokemon,” she tells OK! at the Costume Institute Gala held at Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. “He’s totally absorbed. He doesn’t talk about anything else.”

The 39-year-old supermodel relies on her mom to take care of her boy. When she spends time with him, she loves to take him out and about in NYC. “We like to get banana pudding from Magnolia Bakery,” she says.

Helena’s also a whiz in the kitchen. “I cook almost every day. My mother, who is from Peru, has taught me a lot of great dishes. When mother’s here, I get it for free. I use my free card.”
