Tina Fey & Amy Poehler: Laugh Riot

September 15th, 2008

Talk about starting off the season with a bang!

Tina Fey returned to Saturday Night Live this weekend to join her pal Amy Poehler in the season’s opening skit, a send-up of Alaska governor Sarah Palin and Sen. Hillary Clinton that has  fans everywhere talking, and laughing.

"Good evening, my fellow Americans," says Tina in Sarah’s recognizable Alaskan accent to open the sketch, prompting laughs immediately."I was so excited when I was told Senator Clinton and I would be addressing you tonight."

"And I was told I would be addressing you alone," Amy responds.

The skit goes on to poke fun at the womens’ portrayal in the media, highlighting Sarah’s "MILF" image, with Tina mugging and posing like a cover girl, and Amy saying she’s surprised to hear that people "suddenly care" about the the role of sexism in the current campaign.

Senator Clinton Doles Out Parenting Advice

May 5th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Raising children in Hollywood is tough, but not as tough as raising them in the White House.

Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Hillary Clinton spent the better part of her husband’s eight years in office rearing their daughter Chelsea, now 28, during those all-important adolescent years, and things were definitely different.

"The secret service went on her dates," Senator Clinton tells MomLogic.com during a Town Hall conference in North Carolina. "A lot of her girlfriends’ mothers loved it when they double dated because you know there was the guy with the gun in the front seat."

Getting serious, the 60-year-old bestows some advice to moms in the audience on dealing with teen dating — but not before prefacing that her experience is one in a million, noting that it was "really intimidating" for Chelsea’s dates to meet her or Bill.

"The whole dating experience is fraught with so much anxiety for everybody, certainly for the young men she’s dated," she says. "[It's important to try] to get to know both the girl or boyfriends that your kids have, being part of their lives…just to give you some insight into what’s going on and how you can understand their lives."

Being a present force in your kids’ lives nowadays is even more crucial since, with the advent of technological inventions, what is the norm now certainly wasn’t the norm back in the day.

"A lot of what kids think of as normal behavior was not even invented let alone even accepted today didn’t even exist when I was growing up," she says. "You listen to their conversations and there’s a lot of mental debate going on in your own head — ‘They’re doing what? They think it’s okay to do this or say this?’ But you have to know it in order to know how to navigate through it."

Senator Clinton also recommends carving out time for family meals together, whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. Even during her husband’s eight years in office, she says the clan found time to have nearly all their dinners together.

"We always did. Sometimes I might not be there. More often, Bill might not be there. Most times we were all there," she says. Now there is evidence and if you can find that time together — boy is it hard today — all of that really helps to create the habits that undergirds a successful life."

Those dinners didn’t always go off without a hitch though.

"The first time we ordered pizza, shortly after we were there, it caused a national security emergency," the Senator reveals. "The poor pizza delivery guy was quite dumbfounded."

Part Two: J.Lo Shines a Light on Rolling Stones

April 4th, 2008

It’s sheer pandemonium when the Rolling Stones descend on NYC’s Ziegfeld Theatre for the premiere of their concert documentary Shine a Light. Fans sneak in the line to the press line hoping to score face time with their idols — a cameraman attempts to bring his mom! Of course, it’s air tight as always and no one is getting through.

Surprise: Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are on their way. Really!

Mick Jagger is very kind, but the publicist goes ape after a financial reporter asks the Rolling Stone how the recession affects him.

“You invest in different things,” Mick says. “You have to watch out and you don’t spend too much on drinks. And you only go out twice a week.”

The publicist roars, “You know what guys?! We’re here talking about the movie. If you want to ask about the recession, don’t come.”

And there goes my chance to talk to Mick, as she says it’s ruined for the group of reporters in which I stand. The woman threatens to kick my well-meaning pal out. Whoa!

There’s also high drama when I ask Charlie Watts about whether he supports Hillary Clinton, who appears in the first half-hour of the film. “Yeah, I think so,” he says. Bam! “Ask him questions about the movie,” she says, cutting him off. “She was in the movie!” I protest.

Luckily, reps cool their heels by the time the other Stones make their way.

Ron Wood, who smells of alcohol, says, “Is there any water or anything?” when he steps up. Voila — a bottle of Poland Spring appears.

“You’ve done everything,” a reporter begins. “I haven’t done everything… you’re gorgeous,” he says.

Ron tells me the group will never again perform their first single "Come On." “They absolutely refuse to play it. I go, ‘Come On,’ it’s a great song, let’s go.’ I try to get them to play it but they won’t.”

What’s his favorite thing to do in NYC? “Try and get out on my own. It’s impossible.”

Although Keith Richards says he’ll never retire from touring, he confesses to taking more naps. “Now and again, yes,” he says. He cackles when asked the secret to a happy marriage, and says his favorite place in New York is “my bedroom.”

Jerry Bruckheimer, Vanessa Carlton, Michelle Yeoh, Tommy Hilfiger and Gina Gershon give love to the Rolling Stones on their way into the venue as stunning Theodora Richards waits for a friend. Stephen Bing — the billionaire who fathered Liz Hurley’s son Damian — produced the film, but he’s dressed way down in faded jeans and white gym shoes.

The movie starts, but reporters wait because reps say tickets are being saved for J.Lo and Marc. Thirty minutes after the screening begins, the glam couple arrive, smiling and waving regally. How are the twins? “Thank you,” she tells me.

Pick up the OK! out now to find out how Keith feels about this concert documentary competing with Miley Cyrus’s record-breaking concert documentary Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds. “Britney Lost 15 Lbs. in Just 4 Weeks" is the cover line. And, don’t miss Part One: My Day With the Rolling Stones.

Shine a Light is in theaters now.

Part One: My Day With the Rolling Stones

April 3rd, 2008

The Rolling Stones greet reporters at NYC’s Palace Hotel with a luncheon spread that includes arugula salad, turkey sandwiches, chicken wraps, mozzarella pearls and pineapple carrot cake.

The guys get a standing ovation when they enter the room to chat about their Martin Scorsese-directed concert documentary Shine a Light.

“Good afternoon,” Mick Jagger says politely.

What’s his secret to boundless energy at the age of 64?

“No gym, no vitamins,” he says. “That should do it. Just get out there.”

Does the band plan to retire at 70?

“That’s only five years away!” Keith Richards laughs.

Shockingly, I notice Ron Wood making eyes at me while he lets his bandmates answer all questions. What?!

A fellow reporter offers me $5 if I ask a question addressed to “Marty.” We quietly chuckle when someone else goes there. The Oscar-winning director says he uses Rolling Stones songs in all his films.

Shine a Light is the only film that Gimme Shelter is not played in,” Martin says. “When I use Gimme Shelter in a film, I don’t remember I’ve used it before. Someone will say, ‘You’ve used that before,’ and I say, ‘That’s all right, let’s use it again.’ I keep forgetting. The music has been very important to me over these years. The music is in my DNA.”

The documentary includes performances with Christina Aguilera, Jack White and Buddy Guy — and features a giddy Hillary Clinton.

“I like all of the duets very much,” Mick says. “I think they really work, because they don’t always work, those duets. I think everyone liked all the duets. I think they really come off.”

Will the band do any tribute albums?

“I often do tributes to Martha and the Vandellas in front of my mirror,” Mick laughs.

How much fun was it shooting this for two days at NYC’s Beacon Theatre?

“Careerwise, you see these things as great fun but they’re also challenges to do these things that are slightly different from what you do normally,” Mick admits. “It was fantastically enjoyable but it was nerve-wracking.”

When a reporter from Argentina double-teams questions, Mick gets confused. “I’m lost now. Next time I come to Argentina, we’ll go to the bar and talk about it.”

What was Martin like as a director?

“He’s the best one around,” Mick says. “I’m going to embarrass him now. He’s not part of the furniture. He’s actually sitting here. He’s a fantastic director and he assembled a wonderful crew.”

Whoops — time’s up.

“Thank you very much indeed,” Mick says.

Wait, there’s more!

Check back tomorrow to find out out about my super-juicy night with the Rolling Stones in Part Two: J.Lo Shines a Light on Rolling Stones.

Brangelina Related to Obama, Clinton

March 25th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

In a new report by the AP, the New England Historic Genealogical Society has found a link between Senator Barack Obama and actor Brad Pitt, and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Pitt’s girlfriend, Angelina Jolie.

According to the organization, Pitt and Obama are ninth cousins, linked by a man named Edwin Hickman, who died in Virginia in 1769. Clinton and Jolie are also ninth cousins, twice removed, who are both related to a Jean Cusson who died in St. Sulpice, Quebec, in 1718. Spokesman for the Obama campaign, Ben LaBolt, declined to comment on the senator’s ancestry.

Clinton, who is of French Canadian descent on her mother’s side, is also a distant cousin of Madonna, Celine Dion and Alanis Morrissette, according to the report. Obama, the son of a white woman from Kansas and a black man from Kenya, can call six U.S. presidents, including George W. Bush, his cousins.

Genealogist Christopher Child says that while many candidates spend time pointing out the differences between them, their ancestry shows they are more alike than they think. "It shows that lots of different people can be related, people you wouldn’t necessarily expect," Child says.

Child says Obama is also distantly linked to Winston Churchill, Civil War General Robert E. Lee, and — (drum roll please) — Vice President Dick Cheney.

The New England Historic Genealogical Society was founded in 1845, and is the largest and oldest nonprofit genealogical organization in the country.

Catching Up With ‘Saturday Night Live’ Star Seth Meyers

March 15th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

Saturday Night Live star Seth Meyers hopes appearing on the show is a new must-do for American politicians.

Since Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have put in face time on the show, he hopes to fit John McCain in there, too.

“Well, he has hosted before so he’s a friend of the show,” he says. “He hosted about three years ago. I hope to see him again soon. He’s a very funny guy.”

How will Seth cut back if there’s a recession?

“We’ll stop having endings on our sketches,” he says.

And, what would this funnyman, 34, do if he weren’t a comedian?

“Based on what happened during the strike, I would walk around in the streets holding a sign,” he yuks. “I found out I have no other marketable skills.”

Perhaps he’d bide his time dancing to his favorite classical tunes from Mozart.

“I like the attention when no one else gets up to dance,” he says.

Catch Mariah Carey performing on tonight’s edition of Saturday Night Live.
