Madonna and Guy: Making it Work!

May 27th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Don’t believe the hype!

Despite rumors of her marriage being on the rocks, Madonna simply glowed next to her hubby of 7 years, Guy Ritchie, at the May 21 premiere of her documentary I Am Because We Are at the Cannes Film Festival.

"They looked happy," an onlooker told OK!. "Guy would whisper something in her ear that only she could hear and Madonna would beam."

The Material Girl is likely spending as much time as she can with her man, before she heads off for a headlining tour to promote her new album Hard Candy. Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet Tour kicks off August 23 in Cardiff, Wales.

Madonna: “I’m Happy to Be a Guinea Pig”

May 22nd, 2008

Madonna has been called many things in her life, but guinea pig?

The singer, who is at the Cannes Film Festival to present her documentary I Am Because We Are, says she’s happy to be a trail blazer for those wishing to adopt from impoverished countries like Malawi.

"Up until this time there wasn’t an adoption law, so consequently I’m sort of the template or the role model, so to speak, for future adoptions," the singer told a news conference in Cannes.

The film recounts the story behind Madonna’s efforts to adopt David Banda, a boy whose mother died in childbirth in Malawi. Since she began the adoption proceedings in 2006, critics have attacked her from every angle, claiming the singer used her celebrity to by-pass laws normally restricting adoptions by non-residents. Madonna says she just tries to keep everything in a positive light.

"Yes, it was painful and it was a big struggle and I didn’t understand it, but in the end I rationalized that when a woman has a child and goes through natural childbirth she suffers an enormous amount," she said. "hopefully after we get through this adoption it will be easier for other people to adopt children and I’m happy to be the guinea pig," Madonna said.

Madonna continues, "So I sort of went through my own kind of birthing pains dealing with the press on my front doorstep and accusing me of kidnapping or whatever you want to call it. In the end it made me stronger so I can’t complain."

David has been living with Madonna and her husband Guy Ritchie in their London home since he was 13 months old. The couple also has two children Lourdes,11, and Rocco,7.

Madonna Returns to the Movies!

April 25th, 2008

Amid the hype and hoopla of the Tribeca Film Festival, Madonna struck a serious tone in debuting her latest foray into film, I Am Because We Are, a documentary about the heartbreaking conditions facing orphans in Malawi. The pop star wrote and produced the film, but instead of going with a big-name director she tapped her nanny’s husband, Nathan Rissman.

Of course, she has her reasons for thinking the first-time director was the perfect candidate for the job. "He basically re-routed the electricity in my house,” Madonna told reporters. "He’s looked after my children. He did everything, and started making home movies of my children. He’s very creative.

"And he has a lot of humility," she added, "which I thought was a good quality to have."

Madonna has a very personal connection with Malawi, having adopted son David Banda from the country in 2006—an event that was not without its share of controvery. Yet she hopes that her film will help the less-invested masses see that there’s something everyone can do to help the impoverished African nation.

"Even if it’s writing letters to kids that live in clinics, and sharing your experience with the documentary, it’s an amazing thing to connect to them and find out what’s going on,” she says. "Just educating yourself about what’s going on in Africa would be great."
