Terrence Howard: Iron Man 2 Re-Casting a “Very Bad Choice”

April 22nd, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

After the runaway success of last summer’s Iron Man, it came as a big surprise to many that one of the film’s big stars, Terrence Howard, had been replaced for the currently filming sequel by Don Cheadle. Now, the Hustle & Flow star is speaking out about the situation — and he’s not happy.

In a new interview on <a href="http://www.parade.com/celebrity/celebrity-parade/archive/terrence-howard-iron-man-recasting.html" target="_blank">Parade.com</a>, Terrence says that the producers of the film, "made a choice, and it was a very, very bad choice. They didn’t keep their word. They didn’t honor my contract. They produced a great bounty with the first one but they put it all in the storehouse and you were not allowed in."

And, at least according to Terrence, he wasn’t the only one getting short-changed by the filmmakers. "They did the same thing with Gwyneth Paltrow, from what I’ve been told," he claims. "They did it with almost everyone except Robert Downey."

All bad feelings aside, Terrence says he doesn’t plan on letting his sour grapes get the best of him. "I believe in karma. When someone does something wrong, you don’t have to get them back," he explains. "Everything right will return the favor for you."

As for RDJ himself, he’s now on a diet that while change his physique from Sherlock’s helper, Watson, into Iron Man alter-ego Tony Stark.

"I’m on Beefcake Charlie status," he jokes. "I’ve got to not be the skinny Brit anymore. I have to be the Tony that you know and may have loved," he told the show during and interview about his latest film, The Soloist.

RDJ Talks About Iron Man Switch

November 6th, 2008

The decision to replace Terrence Howard in the upcoming Iron Man 2 is turning into quite the controversy!

On Thursday, Robert Downey Jr. revealed his thoughts on the switch – (Don Cheadle will replace Howard in the sequel as Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes) telling MTV News, "I had nothing to do with that decision. I love Terrence very, very much. That’s all I’ll say because I haven’t talked to him yet. I’ve always admired Don Cheadle. It’s one of those situations where I still don’t quite know what happened or why. Here’s what happens too: Things happen and you wind up commenting on them before you’ve actually talked to the people and it’s in poor taste."

Robert went on to say that his first priority is to Iron Man director Jon Favreau and making sure the sequel is just as good as the first film.

"I think the important thing with the Iron Man franchise is to not do too much too soon and to make sure we don’t piss off the public that puts us in the position we’re in," Downey said. "We’ve just got to keep rolling up our sleeves higher further up the elbow. If we show up and we’re in the right head space and our heart’s in the right spot and we really think about the audience at every turn and we don’t try to stamp our hipness on to anything. It’s very interactive."

Terrence Howard Sued for $5 Million

October 27th, 2008

It’s been a tough month for Terrence Howard. First, the actor was reportedly shocked to learn that he’d been replaced in the upcoming film Iron Man 2. Now, the one-time Oscar nominee has been slapped with a $5 million lawsuit in which he faces allegations of assault for punching a man in January.

The lawsuit claims Howard punched composer Tex Allen (brother of director/choreographer Debbie Allen) during rehearsals for the Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof that Howard headlined last winter.

The actor’s publicist dismissed any hoopla associated with the lawsuit, telling E! News, "We are aware of the allegations and expect this frivolous suit to be dismissed."

No comment yet from the Allen camp.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Memoir Postponed

July 22nd, 2008

You won’t be able to cozy up in bed with Robert Downey Jr.’s memoir this year.

The Iron Man star has halted plans to release a self-penned memoir, the Associated Press reports.

Described as an in-depth look at "the highs and lows of [the actor's] life and career" — which has been plagued by drug busts and jail terms — the book was due out this year, but Robert has put it on the backburner and returned his advance to publisher HarperCollins.

The 43-year-old star’s rep confirmed the postponement, but declined to clarify the reason.

Perhaps Robert couldn’t fit writing into his busy schedule. The Oscar nominee is experiencing a career renaissance of sorts this year, headlining the year’s biggest movie so far, Iron Man, and August’s highly anticipated Tropic Thunder, in which he plays a black man.

Two weeks ago, the star signed on to play Detective Sherlock Holmes in a Guy Ritchie-helmed flick, which will start production in October.

Holmes Sweet Holmes for Robert Downey Jr.

July 10th, 2008

Fresh off his $300 million turn as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. is ready to fight more crime, this time as another literary character — Sherlock Holmes.

Warner Bros. has tapped the actor to star in its forthcoming eponymous mystery drama as the world’s most famous detective. The film will also be based on a new comic book about Holmes by Lionel Wigram, one of the flick’s producers.

Guy Ritchie is slated to direct, with production commencing in October.

Robert didn’t have much competition at the box office when Iron Man steamrolled to No. 1, but he may have to do battle with another very, very similar film to get to the top with Sherlock Holmes.

Last week, Columbia Pictures announced their own Holmes project, reteaming Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby stars Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen. The as-yet-untitled film will feature Borat, er, Sacha as Sherlock and Will as sidekick Dr. Watson.

Robert Downey Jr. to Play Hugh Hefner?

May 23rd, 2008

With audiences and critics hailing his performance as the alcoholic and perpetual ladies man, Tony Stark, in the blockbuster hit Iron Man, it seems safe to say that Robert Downey Jr. has officially has become a bonified action hero.

Now a real-life Playboy is hoping to give the actor is next film role.

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Hugh Hefner wants Downey to play him in a new big-screen biopic titled Playboy.

Hef reportedly took a liking to the actor after seeing Iron Man, admiring his humor and skill in showing his vulnerability.

The film would be shot mostly in Chicago, where Hefner’s Playboy Magazine got its start. Hefner has since moved to L.A.’s Holmby Hills. Production could begin as early as next summer, depending on Downey’s Iron Man 2 shooting schedule and the finalization of Hefner’s script.

A rep for the actor said Downey is interested in Hef’s project but is unlikely to commit to it until a script is done and a director is named.

Famed filmmaker Brian Grazer is among the film’s producers.
