Tom Cruise Gets Real

December 17th, 2008 / Author: Valerie Nome

Tom Cruise arrives at 6:50 p.m. for the NYC premiere of his Nazi suspense thriller Valkyrie held Monday at Frederick P. Rose Hall in Time Warner Center.

Because a motley group of fifteen Scientology protesters is stationed outside the venue, the glitzy spectacle is located deep inside the building away from all the hubbub on the bustling street below.

The hysteria makes one feel sorry for the warm, kind, generous man who looks everyone in the eyes and finds joy in making others laugh. But he takes it all in stride. The Top Gun star asks to snap a photo mugging with a fellow red carpeteer, saying, “Give me this, man. Appreciate it.”

He also makes fun of WPLJ’s Brad Blanks by copping a fake snore. “I thought we were having a good time, what happened?” Tom yuks. (See video!)

And when asked about his Golden Globe nod for Tropic Thunder, Tom gets in the zone, cocks his head and starts swaying, saying he learned to dance by watching Soul Train. “They always had the best moves.”

Although the likeable actor, 46, dismisses the question “does Scientology give you power?” that comes from a brazen international TV crew, he’s more than happy to gush about his beautiful family that includes wife Katie Holmes, who turns 30 Thursday, and kids Bella, 15, Conor, 13, and Suri, 2. A few highlights:

*Suri was afraid of the eyepatch he wears in the flick, and would remove it whenever she saw Tom wearing it. “The girls in the makeup trailer had a little teddy bear and put the patch on it, and gave it to her so she would play with it. She got used to the patch on the teddy bear.”

*She was also afraid of her Santa Claus doll. “At first she was like ‘no, dada, no, no.’ She happened to give it another go, and it’s great.” As for Christmas plans? “We still haven’t decided.”

*Suri’s a big talker. “Her vocabulary is incredible.” His favorite phrases? “The one that we love is ‘I love you.’ I love hearing that. ‘I love you mama.’”

*The keys to his relationship with Katie are communication and taking turns. “She’s in there hosting the family and friends tonight, the same way I did when she did her Broadway show — that was my job. That way she can go out and do her thing.”

*Tom enjoys being Mr. Mom. “I always wanted to be a father. I love every moment. Now we’ve got the teenagers and the 2½ year-old. I feel lucky to have that dynamic of they’re going through their things while we’re all surrounding her and enjoying every moment of entertainment that she brings.”

It’s no wonder Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt are the biggest movie stars in the world. They know how to work it. Very impressed.

Valkyrie is in theaters December 25.

Nicole: Other Things I Want Besides Acting

November 18th, 2008

One of the screen’s brightest and most familiar stars might not be shining for fans much longer – Australia star Nicole Kidman says she might quit acting in the future to focus on her family.

"In terms of my future as an actor and stuff, I don’t know," she told reporters at a press conference in Sydney.

"I am in a place in my life where… I’ve had some great opportunities and I may just choose to have some more children," says the mother of three. "I’ve no idea what is in my future but I am very at peace with where I want to be. There are many things I want to do besides act."

Nicole has two children, Connor and Isabella, whom she adopted with first husband Tom Cruise, as well as four-month-old daughter Sunday Rose with husband Keith Urban.

If she retired now, the Aussie actress would still have an Oscar under her belt for The Hours, as well as a string of films that didn’t hit it big with moviegoing audiences in recent years, like Margot at the Wedding and Fur.

"But that’s my body of work. I am not going to apologize for it. I have kind of unusual taste and sometimes it’s mainstream and a lot of times it’s not," she said.

Cover Story: Baby Brother For Suri!

November 5th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have made it no secret that they want more children in addition to daughter Suri — and no one is rooting for a new Cruise baby more than Tom’s ex, Nicole Kidman!

In the December issue of Glamour, the star of the upcoming Australia explains that Connor, her teenage son with Tom, is still hoping for a brother. “[He] would like one of us to have a boy,” she confesses. “He wants that boy. Katie?”

The idea that Nicole is throwing down a challenge to Katie, her successor in the role of Mrs. Tom Cruise, may seem odd to some. But since the actress married country superstar Keith Urban she and Tom have become increasingly civil, almost friendly — especially when it comes to their adopted children, Bella and Connor.

The two couples exchange Christmas gifts, and Katie personally selected $2,000 worth of baby goodies from Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills to send to Nicole shortly before the July 7  birth of Sunday Rose, her daughter with Keith. As OK! exclusively reported at the time, Bella and Connor flew to Nashville to meet their new half sister just days later.

“At 41, Nicole knows she’s not likely to have another baby,” a friend of the actress tells OK!. “It’s obviously up to the much younger Katie to give Connor that baby brother.”

And the Cruises are more than ready to welcome a new child into their lives.

“Katie and Tom very much want another baby,” a friend of the couple tells OK!. “There may be no better time than now for Katie to get pregnant again and absolutely nothing would make Tom happier."

Kirk Cameron is ‘Still Growing’

June 3rd, 2008 / Author: Valerie Nome

Kirk Cameron went from teen heartthrob to Christian evangelist, and released his autobiography, Still Growing, which is in stores now.

The former Growing Pains star started a family with costar Chelsea Noble, whom he married in 1991, and the couple are parents to six kids — Jack, 11, Isabella, 10, Anna, 9, Luke, 7, Olivia, 6, and James, 5. (The four oldest are adopted, and the two youngest are biological.)

How did Chelsea catch his attention at the height of his career?

“She caught everybody’s attention when she walked on the set,” Kirk, who leads The Way of the Master evangelical ministry, tells me. “She’s beautiful and what really captured my heart is when I began to get to know her. She was just such a real person. She was far more beautiful on the inside than she was on the outside, which is rare in anyone, let alone an actress from Hollywood. My wife is from a small town in upstate New York. She really wasn’t raised and bred here in Los Angeles. I think that’s what accounts from her down-to-earth and straight-forwardness that I love so much.”

Being married for seventeen years is quite a feat for a Hollywood couple.

“There’s a little phrase that we used called ‘learning to die to yourself,’” Kirk tells me. “That ultimately means marriage is not an agreement where you agree to let your spouse make you happy for the rest of your life. If you go into marriage that way, you’re going be disappointed and you’ll end up most likely another sad statistic. But if you go into marriage realizing this is a school where you learn to die to yourself and work for the higher good for the one that you’ve married, even at the cost of personal expense … in other words, lay down yourself and your life for the one you’ve married, and you will cause that person to grow and bloom and be the most wonderful spouse in the world. That’s a person you can live with and stay in love with for the rest of your life.”

Family gatherings between the four Cameron sibs – including Full House star Candace, 32, Bridgette, and Melissa – can be a hoot.

“We usually get together for special occasions,” Kirk tells me. “My sister just had a baby, so we all got together for that. Sometimes for Thanksgiving the family got together. We usually have a big Christmas dinner at our house. Everybody comes over. We’ve got a pretty big family. Our family gatherings are forty-plus people, and with all the kids, it’s up to around fifty or sixty.”

What are Kirk’s kids into these days?

“My son Jack is 11, and he’s into music and Legos,” Kirk tells me. “My daughters are into ballet and singing. My littlest one, she wants to be a farmer. She wants to be Fern from Charlotte’s Web. She’d like to have a cow and a goat and a goose and a rat and a spider. And my other little guys, they love racecars and power tools and catching lizards.”

How has adoption changed their lives?

“By giving me four beautiful children to love,” Kirk tells me. “Adoption is so special. My adopted kids know that they’re in our family because we wanted them to be in our family. We chose them. That’s something special that every adopted child can know. They didn’t have to be adopted by their parents. They really wanted them. They’re just my kids. Literally, I forget who’s adopted and who’s not. It really doesn’t seem like that. They’re my kids, I’m their dad and Chelsea’s their mom. It’s just a great, wonderful way to not only have a family yourself but meet a real need in the lives of so many of these orphans.”

Fact Or Fiction: Do Nicole’s Kids Call Her “Mommy”?

November 29th, 2007 / Author: cwillett

Internet news sites and blogs around the world are publishing what they claim to be a quote from Nicole Kidman’s interview with Web site www.GM.TV where the Oscar-winning actress not only says that her children don’t call her "mommy," they also don’t even use the word "mom" when talking to her, preferring instead to call her by her first name.

However, it appears that these sites have quoted a video without even watching it first. Because while Nicole, who has two children, Isabella, 14, and 12-year-old Connor with ex-husband Tom Cruise, does, indeed, say, "They don’t call me mommy," when the interviewer asks her, "What do they call you?," the actress replies immediately by saying "Mom… or sometimes Nicole."
