David Archuleta’s Dad Charged with Soliciting Prostitute

June 18th, 2009

There’s some scandalous news surrounding the father of cutie-pie pop star David Archuleta after it’s come to light that the singer’s father was arrested during a raid at a Utah massage parlor in January.

According to Celebuzz.com, Jeff Archuleta was charged with allegedly soliciting a prostitute on Jan. 14 in Midvale, Utah, after local cops busted a massage parlor and discovered David’s dad getting some extra special service from one of the employees.

Though the elder Archuleta claims it was the first time he’d been to that massage parlor, and that he only went there because of a back problem, he nonetheless pled no contest to charges of soliciting prostitution, a Class B misdemeanor, and was fined $582.

This isn’t the first time David’s dad has been the center of controversy. During the singer’s run on American Idol, producers had Jeff banned from rehearsals for his overbearing behavior.

Idol Axes Dad’s Unofficial Archuleta Concert

June 5th, 2008

So it doesn’t look like David Archuleta’s meddling dad is about to take a back seat now that his son is a star.

Jeff Archuleta and the American Idol bosses had a run-in during the competition that ended with them banning him from rehearsals for interfering with David’s performances.

And now the show’s over, Jeff and the execs are struggling over control of the 17-year-old’s career once again.

David, who finished second to David Cook on May 21, is back home in Murray, Utah, for a few days of rest before rehearsals begin for the Idol summer tour.

So Jeff took it upon himself to organize a concert entitled Back Home With David Archuleta at the 12,000-seat E Center stadium in Salt Lake City for tomorrow night.

He said the charity performance, with tickets costing just $1, would be a chance for David to thank fans in his home state for their support.

But ticked-off Idol execs told him to call off the show just before tickets went on sale on Tuesday.

A source told the New York Post that they were concerned that the one-night-only show would damage ticket sales for the official American Idol Live summer tour, which is stopping for two dates at the E Center on July 14th and 15th.

"They were afraid people wouldn’t buy tickets for the Idol tour if they had already seen David on stage in Salt Lake City," the source told the paper.

Jeff, meanwhile, claims that Idol have told him that he can re-book the date for later in the year.

He told the Salt Lake City Tribune: "When all the minds met, everyone concluded this wouldn’t work out for this particular weekend, and they just want to reschedule it toward the middle or end of the tour."

American Idol reps have no yet responded to our requests for a comment on the situation.

Idol Vs. Team Archuleta

May 15th, 2008

A ‘Team Archuleta’ insider has revealed that there was a battle between David’s camp and Idol producers over one of this week’s songs.

Arranger Richard Parkinson said that he had come up with a daring interpretation of the ballad Longer for David’s Top 3 performance.

But he claims that the show’s bosses vetoed his hip hop re-working of the Dan Fogelberg love song, and told David to sing a cover that was faithful to the original.

"I was a little bit frustrated," Richard, from Utah, told the Z103 radio station.

"We had put a lot of time into making sure the arrangement for that was absolutely amazing.

"I didn’t want to see him do a straight cover and so we put together kind of a hip hop, ballad feel behind that lyric and melody.

"And the producers overrode what we did and just wanted to have him sing a straight cover."

The music pro, who is part of ‘Team Archuleta’ — along with David’s father, Jeff, and voice coach Dean Kaelin — promised that "the whole world" would have been talking about his ’street’ interpretation of the song.

It seems that Simon Cowell would have been on Team Archuleta’s side on this matter, musically at least. After the performance the judge called the song "gooey" and "something you would choose for a 90-year-old".

It was apparently not the first time that the two sides had gone head-to-head over arrangements.

Last week David inserted lyrics from Sean Kingston’s 2007 version of Stand By Me into his cover of the Ben E. King original, ever after producers had told him not to.

Exec producer Nigel Lythgoe later called the incident a ‘misunderstanding’, but there have been reports that it was one of the factors that led to Jeff Archuleta being banned from backstage last weekend.

Execs Wanted To ‘Free’ David From Dad

May 14th, 2008

An American Idol exec has said that Jeff Archuleta was removed from rehearsals and banned from helping with song-selection to "free" his son.

Exec producer Nigel Lythgoe says that he was not kicked out for double-crossing producers by altering David’s lyrics after he was told not to, but that they had just wanted to "take the pressure off" the singer.

Jeff was banned from backstage on Saturday after weeks of reports that he had been interfering in his finalist son’s preparations for the show.

Reports claimed Jeff had been booted because of a row with producers over David’s performance of Ben E. King’s Stand By Me.

But Lythgoe dismissed the incident, in which David inserted lines from Sean Kingston’s reworking of the song into the original, as a "misunderstanding".

"[Jeff Archuleta] has been asked not to participate in the choice of music with David or be in the room when David is working out his routines that he wants to sing," Lythgoe told EW.com.

"He’s fine to be in the studio — nothing wrong with that. We just want David to be able to be free like everybody else to get on and do what they want to do."

David’s voice coach, Dean Kaelin, has defended Jeff, claiming that the ban is to prevent Jeff’s presence from giving David an advantage over his rivals.

But Lythgoe denied that version of events.

"It has nothing to do with fairness. We just want everyone to have an equal opportunity, and if that’s fairness, fine.

"But this is more of just the fact of let’s take some pressure away here, you know? It’s like anybody appearing in front of their mom and dad. Let’s just open up the pressure cooker, release the pressure, and you just get on and do what you gotta do."

David A. Coach Denies Dad Rumors

May 12th, 2008

A friend of the Archuleta family and member of David’s coaching team has denied that the teen’s dad has been banned from American Idol because of his troublesome behavior.

Dean Kaelin is in almost daily contact with the family and has acted their unofficial spokesman during the controversy surrounding Jeff Archuleta.

Since Saturday it has been reported that Jeff had been given the boot from backstage because his interference in David’s performances had become unacceptable.

Today he told the Early Show on CBS that Jeff had been removed from rehearsals because his presence was giving David an unfair advantage over his rivals.

Sources inside Idol have told the Associated Press that things came to a head when producers told Jeff that David would not be allowed to insert lyrics from Sean Kingston’s Stand By Me-sampling 2007 hit single, Beautiful Girls, into the original.

But when David sang the words on air regardless, raising legal problems for the show, producers snatched Jeff’s backstage pass.

Today Dean, who has worked with David for six years, denied that version of the story.

He told the Early Show: "I just spoke to Jeff yesterday and he was on a photo shoot with David.

"And so he hasn’t been banned from American Idol [altogether].

"What I have heard is that it is more of a fairness issue.

"That they have decided that since David is required to have a guardian there because he is younger, as a fairness issue, they have decided not to have Jeff there in the rehearsal area where he’s working on the arrangements.

"But as far as the other contestants, I’m sure they receive a lot of help on the phone from friends and music experts.

"But Jeff is actually on site."

In the past weeks Kaelin has admitted to OK! that Jeff from Murray, Ut., shortlisted songs for David to choose from and worked out arrangements for him.

But he denied that Jeff had made David cry in practices and that he had been banned from the backstage of David’s last TV talent contest, Star Search.

American Idol has declined to comment on the controversy.

‘Dad Picks David’s Songs,’ Says Coach

April 22nd, 2008

Since rumors emerged that David Arculeta’s dad is a notorious ’stage-parent’, both father and son have stayed silent on the matter.

But OK! has been given the first real glimpse behind the scenes of the most talked-about relationship on American Idol.

David’s voice coach told us that Jeff Achuleta does give David a shortlist of songs to choose from and that he coaches his son on interpretation — but, he says, it’s only to make things fair between David and his main rival David Cook.

However, the trainer said that in six years of working with the Archuletas, he has never seen Jeff use, "any kind force or coercion."

And he trashed claims made by Naomi Judd last week that Jeff was put in a guards’ hut to keep him out of trouble when David was on the Star Search talent show.

Rumor have been swirling around Jeff, 46, and his son since it was claimed that David was brought to tears after his father yelled at him in rehearsals.

Then an unnamed CBS exec and a crew-member came forward to say that Jeff was banned from the backstage area of the Star Search competition in 2003 because he tried to "psyche out" David’s rivals in the children’s talent contest.

Even Simon Cowell seemed to take a dig at Jeff’s interference after he criticized David’s rendition of You’re the Voice on Idol, saying he would be "very surprised" if David had chosen it for himself.

Voice coach Dean Kaelin, from Salt Lake City, Or., has worked with David since 2002, when the singer was just 11 years old.

Dean, who has also coached former Idol finalists, Carmen Rasmussen and John Praetor, is a vital member of the Archuleta camp.

Since he’s been on the show, David has called Dean almost every morning to do a vocal warm-up over the phone, and they do exercises that way up to three times a day.

The 17-year-old has even made "emergency calls" to Dean just before the live performance, and the coach carries a portable keyboard with him at all times to make sure he’s ready whenever David needs him.

Insider Dean told us how the Idol favorite and his dad work together.

"They keep David quite busy on the show," he said. "Plus [there's] the fact that he’s at a disadvantage because he’s a minor, so he has to go to three hours of school a day, and so the other contestants have quite a bit more time to work on their song and figure out arrangements."

"So David’s dad spends a lot of his day just kind of looking for songs and screening songs.

"[Idol] give [the contestants] a list every week, saying, ‘here’s songs that are approved that you can choose from.’

"So [Jeff] finds them on the Internet, and he knows David’s voice real well, so he’ll maybe pick out a few and say to David, ‘here’s ones that I think will work well with your voice.’"

Dean says that Jeff and David then choose three of those for David to try out before making the final decision.

Dean says Jeff, who is a jazz trumpeter, "is really good with melodies and phrasing and interpretation", and that he can give David pointers about instrumentation to bring him up to speed with people like David Cook.

"One of the things that is an advantage to David Cook is that he’s led bands before, so he has a lot more experience of arranging songs and knowing what he wants.

"He can go in and tell the band, ‘I want this and I want this and I want this,’" says Dean.

"So it’s nice that his dad has been musical enough that he can offer some suggestions, and because song choice is so important, picking the right song, its nice that they can work on that together."

Dean says that Jeff sees David’s career as a group effort, with the three of them making up Team Archuleta. "Jeff has described it that David is the quarterback, and Jeff’s the offensive and defensive coordinator and I’m kind of the strength and conditioning coach," he said.

Dean, who travels all over the world to train singers, also poured cold water on claims Naomi Judd made last week about Jeff.

The country star, who was a judge on Star Search when David won it, said on the Today show that Jeff was made to sit in the guards’ box to keep him out of trouble. But Dean says she never met the Archuletas, and put it down as hear-say.

He said claims made by the unnamed exec that David had been banned from backstage on Star Search and that he had brought David to tears during Idol are "ridiculous".

"[The rumors have] been unfortunate because David really is a good kid, and really humble, and actually a little bit shy.

"And I think people are starting to use some of these things about his dad [to suggest that] maybe that’s why he’s shy: because his dad’s controlling him or abusing him.

"I’ve worked with him for six years and I’ve never seen anything at all that indicated any kind of force or coercion or bad relationships," he said.

“Archuleta Is Worst Stage Dad,” Star Says

April 18th, 2008

More details have surfaced about David Archuleta’s alleged "stage dad".

So far we’ve heard reports that Jeff Archuleta brought David, 17, to tears during Idol rehearsals and claims that he was banned from backstage on another talent contest after he tried to "psyche out" kids.

Now Naomi Judd, who judged the Star Search contest the year David won it, has called Jeff the "worst stage dad" and revealed that he was put in the security guards’ box to keep him away from the kids!

The country star — who knows a few things about bringing up performers, since her daughters Wynonna and Ashley are both stars — got to see Archuleta Snr. in action back in 2003 when David was just 12.

On the Today Show yesterday, Naomi even sent out a message to Jeff, 46, telling him to lay off the Idol favorite.

"[David] was on Star Search when I was a judge," she said. "The minute I saw him I went: ‘Five stars — he’s going to be huge.’

"But I want to give a shout out to his dad: leave him alone!

"His dad is like the worst stage dad," she said.

"They had to put him in the security guard’s little box!"

At the end of March, an unnamed CBS executive who worked on Star Search told The New York Post that Jeff was banned from backstage after other parents complained that he was, "trying to subtly psyche out the other kids."

Meanwhile, a member of the show’s staff told the L.A. Rag Mag Web site that the producers took action after he called Tiffany Evans, the 10-year-old who beat David to the Grand Champion title, at night in her hotel room.

But Tiffany recently told OK! that although she did spend some time around Jeff, she "doesn’t recall" much about her relationship with him.

The Archuleta family have not commented on the controversy in the press, and there haven’t been any reports of behind-the-scenes family strife since early March, when David fluffed the lyrics to a Beatles song.

But will Mr Archuleta’s true colors come through as the pressure mounts in the final weeks?

David’s ‘Intimidated’ Rival Talks to OK!

April 9th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

So American Idol’s juiciest controversy rumbles on: Is David Archuleta’s father an oppressive "stage dad" or just a good parent who wants the best for his son?

Frustratingly for Idol addicts, the girl involved in the most notorious of the alleged incidents said today that she can’t remember enough about it to put the matter to rest. But then, she was just 10 years old at the time.

Teen star Tiffany Evans has been at the center of the rumors since it was reported that Jeff Archuleta intimidated her while she was competing against his son on the TV talent show Star Search.

But Tiffany would only tell OK! that, while she knew there were "things was going on" surrounding Jeff during Star Search, she "doesn’t recall" much about her relationship with him.

For weeks now, gossips have been claiming that Jeff Archuleta, 46, from Murray, Utah, is a pushy "stage dad" who brought his 17-year-old son to tears by haranguing him during Idol rehearsals. And some TV insiders say such behavior would be nothing new for Jeff.

Tiffany, who is now a fully fledged artist, competed against David on Star Search. She was named the show’s Grand Champion, while David, now a favorite to win Idol, aced the Junior Singer category.

The New York Post has quoted an unnamed CBS executive who worked on the show as saying that Mr. Archuleta was banned from backstage after other parents complained that he was, "trying to subtly psyche out the other kids."

Meanwhile, the L.A. Rag Mag Web site said that Tiffany, who was 10 years old at the time, was one of the kids in question. A member of staff from the show told the site that Jeff had "cornered" Tiffany and told her that his son was going to win. The staffer said that producers took action after he called her at night in her hotel room.

But today, speaking exclusively to OK!, Tiffany said that while she was very close to David, and did spend some time around Jeff, she "doesn’t recall" much about her relationship with him.

While she said that she was aware of "things going on" surrounding Mr. Archuleta, Tiffany, 15, from the Bronx, refused to spill on the ‘what’ they might have been. She also declined to comment on the allegations that Mr. Archuleta called her at night.

Tiffany, whose self-titled debut album in due out later this month, said: "I’ve heard some things about him [in the past weeks] and I’ve heard something about this story, but I will say, at the time, I really don’t recall my relationship with [David's] father.

"There were things going on, but I don’t recall my relationship with his father."

"It’s been so long. I [was 10] then and I’m going to be 16," she added. "I hung around [Jeff Archuleta] a couple of times, but I don’t recall the relationship."

But Tiffany clearly has nothing but affection for David himself.

"I’m proud of him. He’s grown up. And he’s very handsome too!" she said.

"Basically, me and David hung out a lot [during Star Search]. We talked about a lot of things and he’s a really sweet kid.

"He didn’t cause a lot of problems. He was drama free. He got along with everybody, he was never really competitive, he was just a really sweet kid."

Since Star Search, Tiffany herself has gone on to great things. She has appeared on Oprah twice and acted in the an episode of The District and the movie Diary of a Mad Black Woman. She has worked with Timbaland and her single Promise Ring sold over 100,000 copies and 110,000 ringtones.

The new album, Tiffany Evans, is in stores from April 22 and features collaborations with platinum artists Bow Wow and Ciara, and production by Grammy winner Narada Michael Walden.

"There’s a lot of great things happening right now — we’re getting ready for the album release. I’m very excited!" she said.
