Joey Lawrence is All Grown Up

April 17th, 2009

There used to be a time in the ’90s when you couldn’t turn on the TV without hearing Joey Lawrence’s immediately recognizable exclamation, "Whoa!"

And although he most likely won’t be uttering his signature phrase in upcoming ABC Family Movie My Fake Fiance, he will be reuniting with another piece of his past, his co-star in the movie, Melissa Joan Hart.

"We’ve known each other for years, years, and years," Joey tells OK! of his fellow former child actor. "Literally we met in an elevator in New York City going to a commercial audition in 1982. We’d both go to commercial auditions and stuff, then we both found our way out to L.A, and we were both on TV shows in the early ’80s."

While they hadn’t worked together in the past, Joey says it was something they both said should happen one day if the timing was right.

"This project came along, and it makes sense," he explains. "It has a great director attached, the script was actually really good for a TV movie. I’ve read a lot of bad ones, and this one was actually a really great one, so we decided to do it."

In the movie, two almost-strangers decide to tie the knot just for the swag involved in getting married, and of course, fate intervenes. Meeting your destiny in love is something Joey says he’s quite familiar with, as he first met his wife, Chandie Yawn-Nelson, 16 years ago at Disney World.

"It was raining one night and I wanted to get some ice cream on the way home from my autograph signing and we stopped in this Peaches and Cream ice cream parlor at a yacht club resort in Disney World," he tells OK!. "She was waiting on a bench in a yellow poncho for her best friend to come out of the bathroom and I saw her."

That was that, and the couple dated for seven years, broke up for five (during which Joey married and divorced) and then married in 2005. They’re proud parents to Charli, who turns three on May 10, another experience that has distanced him from his child acting days.

"You wake up every day and you see this little person running around. You know you’re totally responsible for them, and every move they make," he tells OK!. "The way they turn out, their lives, and their livelihood. It’s a tremendous, incredible thing. It’s a tremendous amount of responsibility. It’s what life is all about."

Josh, Mary-Kate, Olivia Do ‘Wackness’

July 3rd, 2008

Coming-of-age dramedy The Wackness opens today. The eagerly-anticipated flick takes place in 1994 NYC, and I caught up with the film’s stars at The Regency Hotel.

Was it tough for Josh Peck, who got his start on Nickelodeon’s Drake And Josh, to do nude scenes?

“It was awful,” the 21-year-old actor tells me. “It was petrifying. I was completely scared. Everybody’s got body issues, but especially when you transform onscreen, it’s very difficult. Olivia [Thirlby] and I didn’t talk to each other the first part of the day. We shot around 5:00 – that magic hour of when the sun was going down. We were right on the beach. I didn’t eat any lunch ‘cause I didn’t want to be bloated. [laughs] I did 100 pushups in my trailer beforehand, and I dropped the robe and went with God.” He adds, “Ghandi was there. That’s as close to God as you can get.”

The actor pretends not to hear when asked three times how he shed the weight he carried as a teen star. Noted!

Where was he in 1994?

“I was eight, so I was watching Power Rangers and rocking Bugle Boy jeans and shoes with lights in them. Listening to Spice Girls, and my first Joey Lawrence album. I remember the things I was saying in ’94. Things like we say now like ‘what’s good’ and ‘that’s tight’ – back then we said ridiculous things like ‘yo, that’s mad crazy b.’”

He was talking like that at 8? “Yeah.”

Here comes director Jonathan Levine, who talks about Sir Ben Kingsley and Mary-Kate Olsen’s fabled love scene.

“It was cool because he’s playing someone who’s so immature and she seems really wise when you meet her … and it was also 3 o’clock in the morning,” he says. “They were having fun with it. They were having a good time.”

Meanwhile, Olivia Thirlby, 21, won’t tolerate Mary-Kate questions, but tells me she would “love to” work with Seth Rogen even though she was replaced by Amber Heard in his forthcoming comedy Pineapple Express. “I was really disappointed because I love Judd Apatow and I love Seth Rogen and I’m a huge fan of their comedy. I was super-pumped to be a part of one. It was disappointing, but I guess I learned a part of the business. Sometimes with casting it’s completely out of your control. You’ve gotta not take things too personally. I still have no idea why, and I’m not sure anybody knew why. It’s just a decision that came down from on high. I actually don’t know Amber. I’ve never met her before. It kind of happens. All my friends are always auditioning for the same projects, if not the very same roles. It’s sort of fun when I go to L.A., and I stay with friends and we work on the same sides together. It’s a fun experience.”

Method Man cracks a joke when asked about his watch.

“My mom hates when I leave the house with her jewelry, but I had to this morning,” the rapper/actor, 37, says. “I’ve gotta give this back to her.”

What’s his favorite thing about NYC in the summer?

“Fashion,” Method says. “Not for me to wear, but I like booty shorts. Sorry. If you have the legs, flaunt them. And those Spartan-type sandals. I love them. Y’all killing them. The women are murdering those sandals that look like Spartan shoes.”

The Wackness is in theaters now.

Joey Lawrence Fills Wife’s Closet With Clothes

January 31st, 2008

Being married to Joey Lawrence must be great for his wife, Chandie, whom he wed in 2005. Because she travels with him, he does his best to make transitions go smoothly.

“I fill her closet with clothes,” he tells me. “She brings stuff, but I go out and get a lot of stuff for her.”

The actor, who is on tour with Dancing With The Stars, enjoys being a dad to daughter Charli, 21 months.

“It changes every facet of your life in every possible way you can imagine,” he tells me. “It’s an incredible blessing and privilege. It’s a lot of change, it’s different, but it’s all good.”

Joey Fatone is One of the Fellas

October 12th, 2007

You heard it here first — Joey Fatone’s got a brand-new band!

Yes, the former ‘N Syncer is regrouping, this time with some other guys who know a few moves or two.

“I’ve been working on a project with Drew Lachey, Joey Lawrence and Joey McIntyre doing like old school tunes,” Joey reveals to OK!. “It’s kind of like a Rat Pack thing. We’re calling it The Fellas.”

The four, of course, are all alums of Dancing With the Stars and each has pop music experience in their lengthy resumes. Joey F.’s is by far the most recognizable with his seven-year-long stint in ‘N Sync. It’s been six years since the band’s last album and three years since their last performance, so will they ever reunite?

“You never know,” the 30-year-old says. “It’s all about timing, about finding the time to say, can we do it? Is it possible? Is it feasible to do it with everybody time-wise? Everybody’s doing their own thing now, you got J.C. [Chasez] with his own album out, Justin [Timberlake] touring, Lance [Bass] doing Hairspray on Broadway and Chris [Kirkpatrick] doing the VH1 Man Band show so it’s really finding the time to say, can we do it? Is it possible?”

Since everyone’s booked in the immediate future, “[Maybe] one day, it’s like, ‘Hey, I’m free in the year 2010. Let’s do it!’ You never know.”

For now, Joey is keeping busy hosting The Singing Bee on NBC. And don’t think he doesn’t bring the office home with him. The notorious goofball loves watching the episodes at home and critiquing himself.
