Olivia Newton-John’s Tips For Living Well

October 7th, 2008

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Olivia Newton-John is supporting the cause in more ways than one since she overcame her own personal battle with the disease in 1993.

First, her new CD A Celebration In Song featuring duets with Keith Urban, Richard Marx and more is in stores now, and proceeds go to The Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre, which is due to open in Melbourne, Australia, in 2009. She points to Right Here With You, the duet she recorded with Delta Goodrem, as the most personal song.

“It’s about our cancer journey because Delta also had cancer as a young woman,” Olivia tells me of the Aussie singer, 23, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease at 18. “It says ‘don’t give up, here I am, if you need a helping hand, I’m going to be right here with you.’ It’s all about helping somebody who’s going through the cancer journey.”

Secondly, she’s teamed up with Curves to give away one million of her breast cancer self-examination kits called LivAid.

“I hope that one day every woman will be given one of these because it’s important,” she tells me.

For Olivia, 60, who married entrepreneur John Easterling in June, giving back is her way of helping others. But she’s also seen her share of heartache. Aside from breast cancer, the Grease icon’s trials and tribulations have included her longtime boyfriend Patrick McDermott’s mysterious disappearance in 2005, and divorce from Matt Lattanzi, who is the father of her 22-year-old daughter Chloe, in 1995. What is the most difficult thing she’s overcome, and how did she get through it?

“I’ve had a lot of challenges, so I won’t put a name on one of them,” she tells me. “Just believing that I would get through it and knowing that there are no shortcuts. With any challenge or pain or difficulty, the only way through it is to go through it — go through the fire. And you come out the other end of it. There’s a balance in life. I think life has an equilibrium. It balances out. Hopefully you learn from your experiences and grow. I think I’ve always had a pretty positive attitude that I would get through whatever it is. I live life that way.”

She recently celebrated her 60th birthday. How does she feel?

“Fortunate,” Olivia laughs. “I feel very blessed that I’m here and I’m healthy. I couldn’t be in a better place in my life.”

Any tips for looking so great after six decades? Aside from applying her hubby’s Amazon Herb product Illuvia to her skin twice a day, Olivia credits her youthful looks to using the treadmill, taking walks and playing tennis two to three times a week. Their dogs Jack and Sherlock often accompany the couple when they hike or take strolls on the beach. And she’s in fantastic shape. Earlier this year, Olivia spent three weeks walking 250 miles along the Great Wall of China.

For every day, she attributes her sleek physique to the digestive aid Digestazon from John’s Amazon Herb line.

“I take it with every meal and it helps digest food,” she says. “I eat everything now because I can digest it well. I used to eat more carefully. I like grilled food, I tend to like grilled simple foods like salads and vegetables, I eat meat occasionally like chicken and fish. I eat well. I eat fruits and vegetables. I don’t see it as a diet, I see it as a lifestyle for me. I try to eat organically as much as I can.”

Olivia Newton-John Shares Love Story

August 23rd, 2008

Olivia Newton-John loves John Easterling so much, she married him twice!

In the OK! on newsstands now, the Grease icon, 59, shares with me all the details of her special days. (We go way back — here’s a pic with Olivia and Kelly Preston from 2001!)

How did she and her new hubby fall in love?

“We met about fifteen years ago through mutual friends, and at the time we were both in very different places in our lives, so the idea of a romance didn’t really come up,” Olivia tells me. “I thought he was a very nice, charming and handsome man and I really respected him and his passion for the environment and what he and his company, The Amazon Herb Company, are doing to create a sustainable future for the Amazon and its people.”

She adds, “John has been traveling and working in the Amazon for over thirty years, which is why they call him Amazon John. His company harvests rainforest herbs and enables indigenous communities to protect their land through various programs he has set up.”

She continues, “Even though nothing romantic happened when we first met, we stayed in touch over the years. In fact, when my Irish Setter had puppies in the early 90s, John took one of them, which kept us connected.”

When the pair shared the news of their nuptials at a July Fourth party, Grease was the word.

“My dear friend Didi Conn [who played Frenchie] was at the barbecue,” she says. “Friends and family are all very happy for us!”

OK! Exclusive: Inside Olivia Newton-John’s Secret Wedding!

August 20th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

The love story of Olivia Newton-John and her husband, John Easterling, began 15 years ago and was finally cemented this summer with weddings on a mountaintop in Peru and then again in Florida.

After a broken marriage to Matt Lattanzi — with whom she has a daughter, Chloe, now 22 — Olivia was left heartbroken when her boyfriend of nine years, Patrick McDermott, went missing in 2005. But now the Grease star has found happiness again. Here, Olivia tells OK! about her magical wedding days.

"We were married in Peru, and it was so wonderful that we decided to do it again!" she tells OK!. "The second ceremony took place on Jupiter Island, near John’s home, in a sunrise ceremony with an Episcopalian minister. "

Olivia, who sports a rare 5.1 carat natural intersecting twin diamond set in platinum, tells OK! that both she and John designed the ring to symbolize "the two of us and our love for each other."

As for the ceremony, the Aussie star wore a "simple white dress" and planned to wear sandals at the ceremony, "Until the night before I realized how cold it was going to be in the morning.? So John and I went shopping at 10 o’clock at night and I found some handmade suede boots and a traditional matrimonial shawl."

Olivia continues, "John’s family from North Carolina were there, as were my daughter, Chloe, and friends and family. We had a dance floor set up in the yard with red, white and blue accents on the tables.

"There were hundreds of lights in the trees. We ended the evening with sparklers, joining hands in a labyrinth on my property. It was a very memorable moment and one I will always have in my mind."
