Julia Roberts Upstages Tom Hanks

April 28th, 2009 / Author: OK! Staff

Almost every movie star who is any movie star attends The Film Society’s Gala Tribute to Honor Tom Hanks held Monday at NYC’s Alice Tully Hall.

A dizzying array of A-listers including Julia Roberts, Charlize Theron, Adrien Brody, Glenn Close, Sally Field and Steven Spielberg are greeted with hoots and hollers when they enter the building.

“I feel like it’s my birthday,” Pretty Woman Julia says when she hears the cheers. The mom of three, 41, cuts a slim figure and is the essence of effortless glamour.

Why did the allure of Tom Hanks steal the Oscar winner from twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 4, and Henry, 22 months, this evening?

“He’s a great, sort of quintessential actor,” Julia says. “He does campy comedies from Bosom Buddies, where I fell madly in love with him, to a movie like Castaway. Someone says ‘what is Tom like?’ and I say ‘oh, he’s what you’d want him to be.’”

Charlize Theron seconds that thought. “He’s just very sincere, and he lives a very truthful life,” the Oscar winner, 32, tells me. “He’s never kind of done anything that wasn’t authentic to him, and I so appreciate that about him.” The blond beauty, wearing steep heels, just returned from Salma Hayek’s weekend wedding in Venice. “It was beautiful,” she tells me. Favorite thing she did in Italy? “I ate lots of pasta.”

Adrien Brody is also adjusting from jet lag, but doesn’t let that stop him from honoring Mr. Hanks. “I just woke up from a flight,” the sleepy-headed Oscar winner, 36, tells me. “Tom’s obviously an incredible actor, and someone who has worked incredibly hard. I think his kindness and his spirit shines through in the performances, and it gives him a sense that I think everyone feels very familiar with him and a connection to him. I think he’s an impressive man.”

Here comes Tom Hanks, the self-deprecating man of the evening, cracking jokes and making punch lines every step of the way. “My joke is I think I’ve made about twenty-five movies, and I think four of them are pretty good,” the two-time Oscar winner, 52, says with wife Rita Wilson, 52, at his side. “Listen, I’m a lucky man. I’ll take a free dinner.”

What’s the best advice he’s given his son? “Always wear a fresh shirt, and don’t try to sweat in it too much,” Colin Hanks, 31, tells me.

Ron Howard, Saturday Night Live writer/producer Lorne Michaels, Christy Turlington and hubby Ed Burns, John Leguizamo and wife Justine dash to their seats just in time for the tribute to begin.

Turns out, Julia lets loose with a tirade of F-bombs all in good fun. Who knew?!

John, Freddy Deal With Family Drama During ‘Holidays’

December 13th, 2008

John Leguizamo, Freddy Rodriguez and Debra Messing light up the silver screen in Nothing Like The Holidays, which is in theaters now.

The Christmas flick centers on family drama – something we try to avoid at all costs in the Nome home. So, why is it taboo to break bad news during the holidays?

“It’s like talking politics,” John tells me. “You never talk politics at a dinner because you know it’s going to end up in a fight. At the holidays, you’ve got to try not to bring up issues because you know it’s going to be a war.”

The father of two, 44, who is married to wife Justine, hasn’t been so lucky. “One time they got me drunk and then they used me as a whipping post. They said ‘How dare I talk about things in public that are personal? Who am I? The arbiter of the family?’ I don’t blame them. I think they were right. If somebody else would’ve called the people by their names., I would’ve been upset too.”

John continues, “Every family, every holiday is a reason for families to get together and have issues. It just comes naturally. A few drinks, and all of a sudden things come back from the past to bite you.”

Freddy, 33, who has two children with wife Elise, has avoided trouble during this time of year.

“I think it happens during the holidays because people are together, first of all,” he tells me. “During the year, people are so busy with their own lives and they finally get together for three or four days. And people drink. There’s just this element of ease during the holidays, and they all want to get what’s off their chest.”

He adds, “I think we all have a certain degree of dysfunctionality within our families, but my family is pretty functional.”

Nothing Like The Holidays is in theaters now.

Stars Step Out For ‘Australia’

November 26th, 2008

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban are greeted by shrieks when they arrive at 6:20 p.m. for the Australia premiere held at NYC’s Ziegfeld Theatre.

Why should we see this epic World War II drama shot in the Northern Territory and Western Australia – featured in my Australia travel story in the OK! out now?

“It celebrates love and it celebrates life, and I think that sort of thing is good for the world right now,” Sunday Rose’s mom says, with hubby Keith on her arm.

Heavily pregnant Naomi Watts, Famke Janssen, Helena Christensen, John Leguizamo, Padma Lakshmi and Ashleigh Banfield troll through. Lydia Hearst and Kelsey Grammer chat.

Here’s Olivia Newton-John, who is lovingly holding hubby John Easterling. What does she miss most about Australia?

“The bird songs in the air because there are more species of birds – and you don’t realize until you leave there – how much song there is in the air that you don’t hear here and you don’t hear anywhere else,” she tells me. “There’s a sense of freedom and beauty in Australia that there is nowhere else.”

Hugh Jackman waves, and wife Deborra-Lee Furness jokes about his swelling ego. “I always thought he was the sexiest man alive,” she laughs.

Director Baz (rhymes with “jazz,” his rep says - ha!) Luhrmann reveals a precious moment he shared with Nicole.

“There’s a big scene that happens under that boab tree, and I bring it back to do close-ups,” he says. “She said to me [flails hands] … Whenever she does this thing with her hands, it’s like she has a fan. I’m like ‘yes, dear one?’ She said ‘I’m pregnant.’ And she burst into tears. I was tearful, too.”

How has Nicole changed since she welcomed daughter Sunday Rose in July?

“She’s changed, but she doesn’t change,” Baz reveals. “She grows, she matures, she learns, we learn, we become more mature with each other. She cuts to the chase more. Time wasting is the greatest lesson of life, I think. How not to waste time, because it’s the most precious commodity.”

Australia is in theaters now.

And, pick up the OK! out now (cover line: “Reese Witherspoon: Back On Top!”) to read about my Australian Outback adventure pegged to the sights you’ll see in this film.

My trip to Northern Territory and Western Australia was out of this world. I stayed in wildlife luxury accommodations such as Bamurru Plains (it was see-through, but they said the animals couldn’t see inside), Bullo River Station, El Questro Homestead (Kylie Minogue’s favorite. I could ’ve spent the rest of my life in their Zebedee Springs!), Home Valley Station and Moonshadow Villas.

My trip was jampacked with scenic cruises, crocodile spotting, waterfall swims, private planes, helicopter flights, horseback riding and Aboriginal art. And, I ate crocodile and saw wallabys. I greatly enjoyed the pink diamonds at Kimberley Fine Diamonds in Kununurra. Hugh Jackman even went crocodile-spotting at the owner’s home. Loved it!
