*NSYNC’s Chris Kirkpatrick Has ‘Gone Country’

August 15th, 2008

*NSYNC’s Chris Kirkpatrick gets back to the music with a stint on Gone Country 2, which premieres tonight at 8/7 C on CMT.

It’s been ten years since I met Chris and JC Chasez backstage at the Odeon in Cleveland when I interviewed them for MTV just as *NSYNC’s second single, Tearin’ Up My Heart, was climbing the charts.

Today, the 36-year-old music man is driving through Cincinnati, Ohio, en route to Toronto, where he’s recording an album as the lead singer of alternative-pop band Nigels 11.

Wait, what happened to country?

“I just wanted to learn what it was like, how it’s written, because it’s a completely different style of music than what I’m used to with the rock, pop and R&B,” he tells me. “Everything about the writing style and the music is different in this genre.”

The show also features judge/host John Rich, and competitors Lorenzo Lamas, Irene Cara, Jackson 5’s Jermaine Jackson, Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach, American Idol’s Mikalah Gordon and actress Sean Young living and working together. They follow in the footsteps of those on the original Gone Country, such as Maureen McCormick and American Idol’s Diana DeGarmo.

The winner will record and release a single on country radio.

Lorenzo and I had to room together, so he was giving me vitamins everyday and telling me workout stuff,” Chris says.

Who is this dating bachelor’s country crush?

Gretchen Wilson,” he tells me. “She’s cool, she’s ballsy, she says what’s on her mind and she doesn’t beat around the bush. She says ‘this is the way I am, I’m a country girl, and either like me or don’t.’ I like the honesty.”

What was his wildest memory from the *NSYNC days?

“We took our motorcycles on tour one year and went riding in every city. That’s what was cool about riding through Cincinnati just now. I was looking around and remembering places where I’d ridden my bike. I got to ride all across the country.”

Chris
tells me his prized possession from their heyday is the mechanical bull from the tour that he now keeps in his garage. “I don’t want to ride it because if you fall off once, you’ll break something.”

I once interviewed Britney Spears backstage when she was opening for *NSYNC. What is his fondest memory of her?

“After shows when she was dating Justin [Timberlake], she’d come on the bus, hang out and talk. She was a really cool chick. She was a real down-to-earth girl. It was cool to get her take as well as our take about everything that was happening at the time — like the huge explosion and how big we’d get. We were all a part of it. She’s a smart girl.”

These days, Chris has no plans to move to Nashville, but he’s been back twice since taping Gone Country 2 – and his uncle lives there.

What’s his favorite thing to do in Nashville?

“I like the Wildhorse Saloon, the place we performed,” he says. “It’s a cool atmosphere, it has a cool vibe. There’s people line-dancing, there’s plenty to eat and drink, you just sit around and listen to music and watch people dance. People are dancing to hip-hop music, line-dancing. That’s cool.”

Chris hopes to work behind-the-scenes writing and producing country songs. He’s already gotten a headstart with his production company, Working Class Industries, and he’s hosted Kenny Chesney and Dave Matthews in his home studio. “I haven’t worked with the Dixie Chicks, but I’m not opposed to it.”

He nixes any more reality shows like Dancing With The Stars with the firm “definitely not.”

“This is it for me,” he says. “I’m a musician first; I love music. I did this show because I wanted to learn about a genre of music I didn’t know about. I love being around music no matter whether I’m behind the console or in front of the crowd.”

Catch Chris on Gone Country 2, which airs tonight at
8/7 C on CMT.

John Rich Backs McCain

August 14th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Country superstar John Rich is making no secret of his political allegience with his new song "Raisin’ McCain."

The Nashville Star host tells OK!, "You’ve got a guy [in John McCain] who has experience that’s unparalled in the United States."

So does McCain’s ad comparing Barack Obama to Paris Hilton still get his vote?

"I think it was accurate," he says. "Obama comes off as more hype than substance."

I Should Be Sleeping…

July 17th, 2008

I got back from Nashville yesterday and I leave for Cabo tomorrow so I skipped the ESPY parties tonight to pack, unpack and relax - and because I heard Justin Timberlake was bailing on the parties and frankly I was tired.

8pm: I got home from a long day at the office - Yes, I do go sometimes.

11pm: I finally motivated to pack and unpack, knowing afterwards I could go to sleep.

12am: I get a burst of energy.

12:15: I start doing pilates. I should go to sleep.

1am: I get an urge to explore my new tolerance for Country music and download Big & Rich, Tim McGraw and Garth Brooks tunes from itunes. Also download a George Jones song. I know  his name but have gotta admit to not knowing much (any) of his music. When I was interviewed John Rich (pictured) on his tour bus before a taping of Nashiville Star Monday night Mr. Jones  told me I am "pretty as a peach." I’m told he’s one of the greatest living country stars  and that’s a pretty big compliment. I’m flattered, least I can do is listen to some of his music…I was singing the line of the country song, "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" since I got to Nashville - and tried to mount a saddled barrel for a photo opp. I didn’t know until five minutes prior to my spontaneous interview with John Rich that he wrote and sings the song. And here I was liking him for just for his sometimes harsh but honest commentary on Nasville Star.

1:30am: I pour a glass of wine. I should be sleeping.

1:32am: Decide it’s a good time to blog becasue it’s been a whole three hours since I’ve spoke to someone and this is a good forum for me to babble, obviously.

I:40am: About to browse my bookshelf for a new book to read. I should be sleeping.

My friend’s picking me up to head to LAX en route to Cabo at 6am.

I should be sleeping…

John Rich Slams Paula Abdul

May 2nd, 2008

One would think that, considering his upcoming role as judge on Nashville Star, country hitmaker John Rich would have some sympathy for American Idol’s Paula Abdul, who on Tuesday managed to criticize finalist Jason Castro for a song he’d yet to sing. However, you’d be sadly mistaken.

"When Paula made a comment on a performance that didn’t just happen, I put myself in the place of that artist and what they may feel — the humiliation of that," the Rich half of country duo Big & Rich explained at an event to promote the sixth season of the NBC talent search. "The lack of respect is terrible."

In fact, John had some pretty harsh words for singer-turned-TV-personality Paula: "If you’re not any more serious about it than that, get another job! Let somebody that cares judge it."

The country star had even nastier words to say about Idol itself. "American Idol infuriates me… they’re being fake about it," he vented, adding that he’s not surprised the Fox show’s ratings are "in the toilet." (NOTE: While Idol’s ratings are down this season, it is still the highest rated show on TV.)

John also let it be known that his feelings for the show are all-business: "I’m actually friends with Randy Jackson."

Season Six of Nashville Star begins in June.

Stars Celebrate Valentine’s Day

February 14th, 2008

Celebs love to be loved just as much as everyone else.

While Sheryl Crow, Keyshia Cole, Cassie and Christy Turlington will be working, newly engaged KT Tunstall is celebrating the day in Scotland. “We’ll be checking out wedding venues,” she tells me.

“I’m gonna…,” George Clooney, who is dating Sarah Larson, jokes.

“This is going to be my first Valentine’s Day in three years on my own,” Jesse McCartney tells me. “It just might be me on my couch this year. And the TV.”

“I’ll be ordering room service,” Rachel Bilson says. “I’ll be in a hotel room here. Hahaha.” As for his plans, her boyfriend Hayden Christensen says “nothing right now.”

Ryan Reynolds, whose movie Definitely, Maybe opens today, says, “My plan is to run out with 150 of my closest friends and see Definitely, Maybe.” Costar Rachel Weisz says she hopes to go out to dinner. “It’s very hard to get the kids together,” she says. “It’s very sad. I might stay in.”

“The best Valentine’s Day – or the ones I always liked – is when my boyfriend would remember it was Valentine’s Day,” Vanessa Carlton tells me. “That was always a plus.”

Cupid’s arrow certainly puts Brody Jenner in a good mood.

“Usually my mom is my Valentine but this year, yes, I’m going to have a girlfriend,” Brody tells me. “Honestly, it’s been a long time since I actually celebrated Valentine’s Day.”

Selma Blair will be single this VDay. “I’m going to sleep,” she laughs. Gossip Girl’s Dreama Walker tells me she has a date with Ben – and Jerry. (Ha ha) “Dublin Mudslide, definitely.”

How did the stars spend their most memorable Valentine’s Days?

"Last Valentine’s Day I had a show, but afterwards I hung out with my boyfriend and all my friends and their boyfriends," Colbie Caillat tells me. "We went to dinner." (She has a new boyfriend this year.)

“We went for a balloon ride,” Phil Donahue, who is married to Marlo Thomas, tells me.

Naomi Judd remembers, “We went for a ride in our ’56 T-bird, and it’s got those bucket seats. It doesn’t have bucket seats – it has a bench seat. So we put the top down and rode around the countryside with my arm around him, so we can get up snuggly.”

Half the battle is knowing what interests you – and what doesn’t.

Emily Mortimer and hubby Alessandro Nivola know what they’re not going to do. “Not go out and sit in a restaurant with 25 other couples looking into each other’s eyes,” she tells me. “It’s terribly embarrassing.”

And sometimes it’s about a different kind of love.

Gone Country host and country singer John Rich tells me, “My grandmother’s birthday is on Valentine’s Day, so it’s always cool to celebrate her birthday. My grandmother makes all my stage clothes. She’ll be 77 this year. I wear rhinestone jeans and rhinestone shirts – all these crazy outfits. I’ve had big artists come up to me and say ‘man, where’d you get that?’ I’m like ‘oh, my Granny Rich made that.’ She’s a real part of my career and my imaging. Her birthday’s on Valentine’s Day, so I always load her up with a bunch of flowers. She has a little alteration shop in Tennessee. It’s always cool on Valentine’s Day to take care of Granny Rich.”

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!

Maureen ‘Marcia Brady’ McCormick Made For Country Music?

January 25th, 2008

Maureen McCormick is the surprise hit featured on Gone Country, CMT’s reality series about celebs who want to become country singers.

Host John Rich, 34, of Big & Rich fame, called to chat from his Nashville pad.

“What surprised me about her is she’s an emotional roller coaster all the time,” he tells me. “She’s either laughing at the top of her lungs or bawling her eyes out every ten minutes. She’s unpredictable. Once you get to know her, you know that she wears her heart on her sleeve, which is a positive if you’re going to make country music. You’ve gotta be able to tap into that stuff. I was shocked. She was able to get serious when it was time to get serious.”

John calls her ditty The Price I’ve Gotta Pay For Being Me the best song written in the competition that includes Bobby Brown, American Idol’s Diana DeGarmo, Julio Iglesias Jr., Sisqo, Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider and Carnie Wilson. The winner will record a country single produced by John.

“It’s about her life,” he says. “Somebody that’s been typecast like that her entire life … she’s like ‘I’m Marcia Brady, but I’m not Marcia Brady. I’m Maureen McCormick.’ Everybody’s like ‘no you’re Marcia Brady.’ You can imagine that being your life. That would drive you nuts after awhile. You’d have to learn to deal with that.”

Does the former Marcia Brady, now 51, have what it takes to become Nashville’s next big star?

Maureen proved to be a real surprise on that show because out of all the singers, she’s the weakest singer but wrote the strongest song,” he tells me. “In music, a lot of times the greatest song wins. Some of the greatest songs of all time were sung by people who were not the greatest singers. Kris Kristofferson is a great example of somebody who’s an OK singer but an absolute genius songwriter, and had a great career.”

Catch Gone Country, which begins tonight at 8pm ET/PT on CMT.

OK! Exclusive: Jessica Simpson’s Country Troubles

November 7th, 2007

Jessica Simpson has her work cut out for her if she wants to make it in Nashville.

As reported by OK! a few weeks ago, the pop tart has descended upon the town to record her first country album, but some players of the game believe the 27-year-old needs to step up to the plate.

“She is definitely going to have to work hard to prove herself in Nashville because people are judged on talent and merit, not where they eat in L.A. or shop or go to clubs,” a source tells OK! at the BMI Awards in Nashville, where Jess was accompanied pal Willie Nelson.

A strong work ethic is key since Jess is “working with some of the most talented producers and songwriters in the business so she’s not going to be able to skate by.”

The buxom blonde is currently collaborating with John Rich of Big & Rich on tunes and reportedly flexing her songwriting muscles, a skill she’s been honing since her last album, 2006’s A Public Affair, showing dedication on her part.

“I do think she is really committed to working hard and raising the bar on the music she releases.”
