Angelina’s Family Pain

December 4th, 2008

In his new film Four Christmases, art seems to imitate life for Jon Voight. The actor tells his on-screen daughter Kate (Reese Witherspoon), "I have had a lot of experience bending the truth to avoid my family. Years, several divorces…I learned that nothing really beats being honest, honest about who you are, what you need. All the rest tends to work itself out."

Truer lines could not have been written for Voight, who’s character laments, "Not long ago, I wouldn’t have been able to put this group of people together in my wildest imagination. Changes we’ve all been through, hurts we’ve given each other we hope we’re forgiven for them."

Perhaps Jon, 69, was thinking of his relationship with his real-life daughter, Angelina Jolie, 33. The two have been estranged since 2002 when Voight described his daughter in a TV interview as having serious mental problems.

So far Angelina’s partner, Brad Pitt and self-proclaimed family man, has had no luck reuniting father and daughter.

"From the wonderful relationship he has with his parents and with the kids, Brad clearly puts family before everything," an insider tells OK!. "He wants a complete family, and that would certainly include is children’s grandfather."

In 2006, OK! reported that Brad, 44, met with Jon in Calgary, Canada, where both were filming, to encourage a reconciliation. Last May, Angelina revealed, "We have spoken recently, and we are going to try to get to know each other and maybe try not to be this daddy and daughter, but to be there for each other as friends in the future."

But now, with the holiday season under way, and Angelina’s recent public breakdown over her mother’s 2007 death, the possiblity of further patching up this bond looms larger. Jon tells OK! he hopes to see his grandchildren, Maddox, 7, Pax, 5, Zahara, 3, Shiloh, 2, and 4-month-old twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, for Christmas.

While Angelina has reservations, "she has agreed to allow at least one phone call between Jon and the kids," a source tells OK!. "Brad hopes Jon and Angelina will be able to reconnect. His thought is, you only get one mother and father. Even if they are not the best, they are still your family."

Jon Voight “Hoping” to See Twins for Holidays

November 19th, 2008

If there’s one thing Jon Voight has, it’s hope.

At the NYC world premiere of 24: Redemption — airing Sunday, Nov. 23 at 8 p.m. on Fox on Wednesday night, the actor talked to OK! about his holiday plans, what he thinks of the new president he didnt vote for, and how much he wants to meet his newest grandchildren, twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline.

"The twins! Holy smokes…I’m hoping, so we’ll see," he tells OK!. Voight and daughter, Angelina Jolie, have had an infamously estranged relationship in recent years. And while the two are reportedly trying to mend their broken bond, the actor has yet to meet his twin grandchildren.

"I think she’s very happy," Voight tells OK!. "I saw her here before the twins came, and she was so happy. I’ve never seen her that happy. And she’s got this beautiful film with Clint [Eastwood] out, so there’s going to be a lot of energy around that one as well."

Now the mother of six kids with partner Brad Pitt, Voight says a large family was always in the cards for Angelina.

I think it’s wonderful that she loves kids," he says. "She always had this very unusual idea about family. I can’t really attribute it to anyone."

The Oscar winner tells OK! he sympathizes with his daughter and Brad trying to protect their kids amid a daily barrage of paparazzi.

"They are handling it, but it’s a stress on them because they can’t do things, they can’t easily go out and do stuff. They always have to consider the barrage of some kind happening. It’s difficult. They’re just kids after all, they’re just young people."

And as for our new President-Elect, Barack Obama? While Angelina vocally supported his election, her father  — not so much. But he’s not worried.

"We wish the best for him, we want him to be a great president," he says. "I’m rooting for him."

Colin Farrell, Jon Voight Tackle ‘Pride And Glory’

October 23rd, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Colin Farrell is shockingly orange with long, stringy hair when I catch him during the Pride And Glory premiere held at AMC Lincoln Square in NYC.

The Irish actor is on hand to promote the police drama he stars in alongside Edward Norton and Jon Voight. Who is tougher – him or Edward Norton? “He is,” he sighs. “I’ll give it to him because of Fight Club.”

And, riffing on the movie’s tagline, what comes first: blood or loyalty?

“Sometimes one brings about the presence of the other,” Colin says. “That’s what it’s about - the difficulty sometimes in telling the truth and the pain that comes with that and understanding on your own. The loneliness, as well, in doing the right thing, especially in an institutional environment. It depends on the situation.”

Reporters crowd around Jon, who is pummeled with questions about estranged daughter Angelina Jolie, politics – and the movie. Would he like to film with Angelina? “Well, wouldn’t that be nice,” he laments. “I hear her film that opens the same day we do [Changeling] is great. I hear she’s wonderful in it.” Has he seen the twins she shares with Brad Pitt? “No, I haven’t,” he says. Will he see Angelina soon? “You can never tell. It sure looks good.” Is he proud of her? “Oh yeah. I’m very proud. Her brother and I are her biggest fans.” With his amazing career, is it hard to find time to spend with his grandkids? He winks, and reaches for the recorder.

Hey Lake Bell, what was it like working with Colin?

“He’s great. The entire cast is masterful actors. We had fun.”

Noah Emmerich
tells me Colin is the “sweetest, most kindest, most generous man,” and Manny Perez tells me “You read stuff about him that he’s a bad boy, and he’s not a bad boy. He’s a real guy. He’s all about the work and the craft and respects the craft.”

Jennifer Ehle, who is pregnant with her second child from hubby Michael Ryan, thinks Colin might make a decent boyfriend.

“He’s incredibly warm, incredibly kind, he’s funny, he’s charming in a very honest way. He came to the trailer and welcomed me on my first day, which is something I wouldn’t expect someone in his position to do. He’s very kind. I think kindness is underrated when looking for a partner.”

Catch Colin, Jon, Ed, Lake, Noah, Manny and Jennifer in Pride and Glory, which is in theaters tomorrow.

Angelina Backs Barack

October 13th, 2008

Despite the fact that she and her ever-expanding family have been spending increasing amounts of time outside the borders of the United States, Angelina Jolie still has a lot to say about the upcoming Presidential election.

In a new interview with the German edition of Vanity Fair, the Changeling star offers up her favorable opinion on Democratic nominee, Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

"Obama fights for international justice, he wants to militarily intervene in cases of genocide and close Guantanamo Bay," the actress and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador explains. "These are the things that could move me to vote for him, not his roots."

And while Angelina, whose children have all been born in different countries and represent a wide range of racial and ethnic backgrounds, admits that "an American president like Barack Obama would be nice for my family,” she tempers that sentiment by pointing out that there’s more to a Presidential candidate than their family background.

”That’s good," says Angelina. "But it’s not a sufficient reason to vote for him."

Angelina’s choice for President could cause even more tension between the actress and her oft-estranged father, actor Jon Voight, who is not only a vocal supporter of Republican nominee John McCain, but who has gone so far as to pen a piece for The Washington Times where he says that Obama "has grown up with the teaching of very angry, militant white and black people."

Jon Voight: Angelina’s Twins a “Big Deal”

July 14th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Jon Voight was a glowing grandpa as he promoted his new role as villain on Fox TV’s 24.

Of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s newborn twins, son Knox Leon and daughter Vivienne Marcheline–his grandchildren– he says, "They’re Brad and Angie’s babies. There isn’t anything more exciting than that. Of course my heart is with them and all my love goes to them. I was very excited."

Jon can’t say how he found out the news, but the actor says he’s got his bags packed just in case he has to head out of town any time soon.

"If they call me, I’m going to find a way, but I haven’t got the call yet," he says.

Angelina recently admitted to Vanity Fair that she and her father had contacted each other after years of not speaking. She told the magazine in May, "We don’t really have a relationship, but we’re in contact. And wish each other well."

Jon, whose niece has twins, says the gene might run in the family.

"Angie’s got a handful. She knows it, too. Twins are a big deal. Even if they’re the world’s most remarkable sleep oriented, calm children, two kids at the same time is a big deal," he says.

Jon Voight “Deeply Happy” About Angelina’s Twins

July 13th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

After hearing the news that his daughter, Angelina Jolie, had given birth to twins on Saturday, actor Jon Voight was elated.

"I am deeply happy," the Oscar-winner tells Entertainment Tonight. "I’m over the moon.  It’s magnificent."

And though Jon, whose rocky relationship with Angelina is well-documented, was not in France for the births of Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, he told ET, "If I were called today, I’d be there."

Cover Story: Brad & Angelina Adopting a Boy!

June 18th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Even though Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are about to welcome their twin girls into the world at any moment now, OK! has learned that’s not stopping them from making plans to add yet another child to their "soccer team" of a family — a baby boy from Ethiopia.

"Angie and Brad have wanted an African boy for the last couple of years," an insider tells OK!. "They were initially going to have that adoption follow the addition of Pax last year, but that all changed when Angie got pregnant with twins last fall."

Angelina even managed to rub some of her humanitarian spirit off on Brad’s sister, Julie Neal Pitt. When Julie was looking to adopt, the actress directed her to the same African orphanage where she’d found Zahara in 2005. And, according to sources, the two had planned to adopt together at the same time.

"Angelina was pretty far along in the process of adopting a beautiful baby that captured the couple’s heart when she and Brad got the surprise of their life and found out they were expecting," the insider reveals.

Jon Voight “So Excited” to Be a Grandfather Again

June 3rd, 2008

Despite numerous reports, Angelina Jolie did not give birth last week, which means Jon Voight is not a yet a grandfather again. But that doesn’t mean he’s not excited for impending grandparenthood.

“The babies haven’t come yet but am I looking forward to it, yes I am,” he told OK! at the MTV Movie Awards.

The Oscar winner, whose daughter will soon deliver twins — her fifth and sixth children with Brad Pitt — says Angie has a lot of parenting ahead of her. "Twins are a definite handful, but Angie can handle it," he says.

“Have you ever taken care of baby twins? It’s a deal isn’t it? It’s a huge deal,” he says. “You’ve just got two kids and if one starts crying then you starting taking that one and then the other one – oh boy, you have to be young and strong to take care of twins.”

The Jolie-Pitt clan just set up home in France, putting them halfway around the world from Jon. Because of father and daughter’s strained relationship, the actor has yet to meet any of his grandchildren, but is still hopeful for the future.

“I haven’t spoken to her recently," he says. "I would love to see the kids. Right now I just want those babies to be healthy and for the mommy to be healthy. When they come I’m going to be so excited.”

Angelina Honored at Film Festival

February 4th, 2008 / Author: cwillett

While Angelina Jolie won’t take home an Oscar for her critically lauded role in last year’s A Mighty Heart, the actress was more than happy to travel up the California coast to beautiful Santa Barbara on Saturday, where she not only collected the Outstanding Performance of the Year award at the town’s annual film festival, but also chose to provide some insight into her career and life by talking onstage.

Of her decision to star in the 2005 action flick Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the film that would introduce her to partner Brad Pitt, Angelina said, "I’m very glad I did it… It changed my life."

Angelina was also surprisingly candid on the topic of her estranged father, actor Jon Voight, who co-starred with her in the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Though the two have since fallen out again, Angie nonetheless calls the time they spent working together "therapeutic," adding, "it was an important time."

Though many had expected Angelina, who took home Oscar gold in 2000 for Girl, Interrupted, to at least receive a nomination for her work in A Mighty Heart, the 32-year-old will have to hang her hopes on winning at the edgier Spirit Awards, which take place on the beach the night before the Academy Awards.
