Josh Kelley Misses Katherine Heigl on Tour

Before Josh Kelley releases one of his songs, he first likes to run it past his wife, Katherine Heigl. Josh, 29, who wed the actress, 30, in December 2007, tells OK!, “She’s a good critic; I trust her.”
Josh took a break from running his own record label, DNK, writing a song for Leona Lewis, planning a tour that starts in April, and trying to sell a million copies of his latest album, To Remember, via Target and iTunes, to speak to OK!.
OK!: What do you love about being married?
Knowing that you and your partner are a unit. We’ve gotten stronger and closer. I wasn’t grounded before; now we’re building a life together.
OK!: Are you guys romantic?
Yeah, I recently surprised her with a trail of rose petals and notes that led to a dinner I
had set up. She knows how much I love sushi, so she bought a sushi-making class
for me and my friends.
OK!: There were reports that you and Katherine were adopting a child from South Korea…
That’s not anything I feel like talking about right now. It’s pretty private.
OK!: What do you like about touring?
I’m home a lot, making music and being a husband, which is a lot of fun, but it’s great to sometimes be able to go on a road trip with the boys.
OK!: What’s the worst part of touring?
Being away from my wife. After about a week you start talking in that puppy-dog voice like, “I wanna come home.”
OK!: How long does it take to write a song?
Some take 15 minutes, some take 15 days. I can’t let a song come out unless I put my stamp of approval on it.
OK!: Does it bother you to watch Katherine in make-out scenes on screen?
Definitely. It’s not like I watch them and go, “Wow, that’s really beautiful.” I understand that it’s her job, but I don’t love it.
OK!: Do you try out songs on her?
Every now and then she’ll come into the studio and listen. Her reaction tells me if it
needs work. She’s my little barometer.
Stars Share Thanksgiving Memories, Traditions

Beyonce’s mom Tina Knowles is in the kitchen cooking up a big meal this Thanksgiving. She tells me her specialty is Cajun turkey, and the “whole family will be eating dinner together.”
So, why is Beyonce a great daughter? “She’s a great person first. She’s kind and thoughtful.”
Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley will spend the day with brother Josh Kelley and his wife Katherine Heigl – in addition to about sixty members of his family and friends.
“We’ve got a lot of turkeys and hams, and I’m always the one out there playing basketball and baseball with all the little nephews and nieces and all the little kids,” Charles tells me.
What’s Katherine like as a sister-in-law? “She’s great! She’s awesome. It’ll be fun.”
Ne-Yo is another star heading back home. “My mom calls me and says ‘Ne-Yo, I know you’ve been busy doing this all year, but you are coming home for Thanksgiving, right?’” he says. “And there is no other answer but yes. Me and my mom are tight.”
And it’s all about family for Aubrey O’Day. “Spending time with my grandparents was the biggest tradition before I started working in the industry,” the Danity Kane singer tells me. “I rarely get to see them. Grandparents are so wise, and they have so many interesting things to instill in you. Most people go to Thanksgiving and they don’t really talk to their grandparents. They’re like ‘oh, yeah, they’re old, let them sit at the table, walk them over when food comes.’ But if you actually sit down and ask your grandparents about their life – I asked my grandma about being in love, the first time she kissed a guy – things that you don’t think to ask your grandparents. But the way that they see life and values and ideals and the things that they can instill in you are valuable.”
This year my sister Stephanie will be like Miley Cyrus, who often celebrates her birthday on Thanksgiving. Steph turns 23 on her Thanksgiving birthday today.
Miley says, “I love it because then you’re able to have dinner with your family on your birthday. When some people don’t get to come together for their birthday, I get the opportunity to never miss all the family being there, so it’s really great. And I get better food, better cake because we all have to share, so it’s good.”
Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles can’t wait to taste green bean casserole this holiday, but Kerry Washington is all about the turkey. “Turkey really does make you sleepy,” she tells me. “It has that chemical in it. What’s better than eating a big meal and then falling asleep on the couch? It’s fantastic. That’s the best thing about Thanksgiving – everybody’s dazed and confused after their meal.” But don’t expect Kerry to slave away in the kitchen. “When it comes to cooking, I make an excellent reservation.”
Milla Jovovich, however, will be working overtime.
“I cook turkey and stuffing, but I make these amazing candied yams and it really sucks because I’m training right now and trying to get back into shape,” Milla says. “My trainer’s like ‘OK, one day you can do Thanksgiving.’ I’m like ‘what about leftovers?’”
Marcia Gay Harden and family – who have become vegetarians – may enjoy an organic turkey. “I never want to be strict – I never want to be one of those people who go ‘oh my God, I’m eating a turkey.’ I don’t believe that. I’ve eaten it before. I wear leather shoes. I don’t want to be a hypocrite.”
What is Rihanna most thankful for this year? “I’m thankful to be alive and have my family and my friends around me,” the Umbrella singer tells me. “Being able to do stuff that I love to do and live my dream, and live it in a way I didn’t expect.”
30 Rock star Katrina Bowden is traveling. “My family and I always go down to visit my cousins in Tennessee,” she tells me. “We always drive thirteen hours, and it’s quite long.”
Justine Bateman’s favorite part of Thanksgiving is eating dinner, but that’s not all. “I like the decorations for holidays as much as I like the holidays themselves,” she laughs.
Thanksgiving is on top of the list for Darius Rucker.
“Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because the eating – I love everything about it,” the Hootie and the Blowfish singer tells me. “Down South, we have macaroni and cheese and the stuffing and turkey and collard greens, okra soup and all the stuff that I love. I love Thanksgiving. Then you get three football games. What a great day! Thanksgiving’s a great day.”
For Desperate Housewives star Dana Delany, it’s a time for pet peeves. “One that drives me crazy is that my brother seems to get all the leftovers. He grabs them first!”
Victoria’s Secret model Selita Ebanks will take part in the typical tradition. “Every Thanksgiving Day my mother decorates the house for Christmas – ever since I was a little girl it was like ‘get ready for Christmas.’ Christmas is the important holiday.”
Who’s getting up early for the Black Friday sales? That’s always a big deal in our home, but I’m always the late sleeper.

Stars Line Up at CMT Awards

Nicole Kidman towers over hubby Keith Urban as they swan into the CMT Awards, which take place at Belmont University in Nashville. Her baby bump is minimal, and she waves as fans shriek. Carrie Underwood makes her way in at 6:41, but hostess-with-the-mostess Miley Cyrus causes the biggest stir when she walks the purple carpet in a print dress at 6:24.
Aside from Paula Abdul, whose teeth are chattering, celebs donning minimal gowns refrain from making their shivers known on this unseasonably cold evening. “Your hands are warm,” the American Idol judge tells me after a handshake.
Whoa! Naomi Judd actually stands in line to talk to me when I am in the midst of speaking with AI’s Bucky Covington. Insanity! I do adore the Judds – and Naomi is brilliant. I smile on the inside when I see Alan Jackson and his wife about to do the same. I mean, it’s Alan Jackson! (“Way down yonder on the Chattahoochee…”)
OMG, Crystal Gayle is here, too. I loved her when I was a little, little, little kid. She had that amazing floor-length-long hair, and still does. “I love OK!” she says. Who is her favorite young artist? “I think LeAnn Rimes is a great vocalist,” she tells me.
Sara Evans struts up with fiancé Jay Baker. She’s a favorite, too. (Remember Born To Fly? Good stuff!) Little Big Town’s Kimberly Roads confesses she’s a lil’ nervous about performing. Jewel adores her “sweet, feminine” dress.
Now Brad Paisley and his wife, and then Faith Hill and Tim McGraw slide through. Here’s LeAnn with hubby Dean Sheremet in tow.
Taylor Swift greets me with “Hey! How are you?” and reveals the inspiration for her song Teardrops on My Guitar. “It’s about a guy named Drew who I went to school with. I wrote it in ninth grade. It was a guy I really liked and he had no idea. But I think he knows now.” Well, probably.
Miranda Lambert tells me boyfriend Blake Shelton helped her pick out her dress, but he didn’t take great care in finding his duds. “Want me to be honest with you?” he says. “I’ve had these jeans on now – I wore them in Toronto, Canada on Friday, I wore them in Michigan on Saturday, I wore them to Bass Pro Shops on Sunday, and I decided I’m on such a roll that they were ready for this CMT Awards show. These are my good old Wrangler blue jeans. They fit better the longer you wear them.”
Meanwhile, Kristian Kane fractured his ankle in three places while filming a movie in Lake Tahoe. “It was hard getting these jeans over this boot, but I sacrificed comfort for style,” he tells me.
AI’s Diana DeGarmo waves hello, and the boys and girl of Lady Antebellum give me a wave and “hey, how you doing?” Maureen “Marcia Brady” McCormick also says “hi.”
Wow, country music has a lot of cute guys. I count Chuck Wicks, Jason Aldean, Jake Owen and Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley – Josh’s brother — among them. (There are more, too, but off the top of my head.)
Laura Bell Bundy, who starred in Broadway’s Legally Blonde, has gone country with her album Longing For A Place Already Gone. “I call it y’all-ternative,” she laughs. “I’m very influenced by Loretta Lynn’s albums from long ago and her recent album she did with Jack White. She’s a beautiful songwriter, she’s very honest and real. It’s actually her birthday today.”
I bet she’s excited to meet [her sister] Crystal Gayle, too.

Backstage With Lady Antebellum
April 22nd, 2008Gone Country’s Maureen McCormick and Diana DeGarmo are dancing in the front row of the Lady Antebellum performance during the CMT Awards Welcome Party held at Avenue in Nashville.
As partygoers nosh on salad, beef tenderloin, garlic mashed potatoes, chicken roulade and butternut squash risotto, they enjoy the sounds of country’s hottest new trio, comprised of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood.
The band has a lot to celebrate. Their single, Love Don’t Live Here Anymore, is currently #11 on the country charts, and their album is hot off the presses.
But who is Lady Antebellum, and why is there such buzz?
Turns out, Hillary is the daughter of country singer Linda Davis, who recorded a duet with Reba McEntire called Does He Love You. Charles, of course, is the younger brother of Katherine Heigl’s Amazing hubby Josh Kelley.
Backstage at the venue, Charles is quick to add that most of the songs on their self-titled album were recorded at Josh’s house. Are the brothers competitive?
“With sports maybe, but with music we’ve always been really supportive,” Charles tells me. “He’s actually the reason I got back into music. He had moved to Nashville three years ago and talked me into moving down and giving music a second chance. He’s been great.”
The tall blond admits he and girlfriend Cassie McConnell double-date with Josh and his Grey’s Anatomy star wife. What do they do? “Listen to Lady Antebellum records the whole time,” he chuckles.
Ah, fate has its way of working itself out. In fact, Cassie almost didn’t get the chance to land Charles because he had his eye on the band’s brunette bombshell Hillary. Hillary made the first move on Charles when they met at Nashville club Twelfth and Porter in 2006. She approached him as a fan – and singer-songwriter.
“Some people think that she and I are an item, but we’re not,” Charles admits. “Initially when I had her come over and write songs, I did try to get a date out of it. That was my fault. But we never did. I’m waiting for my time to strike.”
Hillary laughs, “Charles and I are not dating, Dave and I are not dating and Charles and Dave are not dating.”
While Hillary is single and mingling, Dave has set his sights on tourmate Carrie Underwood. (The band has also toured with Martina McBride, Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney.)
“She’s great,” he blushes. “We played the Opry with her a couple weeks ago and she actually got invited to be a member of the Opry that night. She’s a beautiful woman – I’d be lying if I said she wasn’t. She’s my celebrity crush. When I watched her on American Idol, I thought she was a really genuine person and really real, but I think she’s gorgeous and a real doll. A real down-home person.”
Speaking of homes, the group’s name is inspired by the Gone With The Wind-style residences used during a photo shoot.
“We were in front of those old antebellum homes with the big, wide columns and we were looking back through the photos,” Charles says.
Dave adds, “At the time we were looking for a name, that word came out and it sounded really cool and confusing. We threw Lady in front of it and it stuck after that.”
For now, their home is on the stage. Tonight’s performance gets a major boost from Woman Scorned, which is a Before He Cheats-style bonus track on their album.
“I’d just gotten wronged by a boy and I just had to get revenge,” Hillary says. “I can pull from personal experience to get the anger up.”

At “One Night In Austin” party thrown by 5 GUM and Perez Hilton (who was seen having dinner with Carson Daly and chatting over cheese burgers at the EastSport Cafe), everyone from Pharrell, who performed with his band N.E.R.D. to Joe Simpson (without either one of his pop star daughters) and even Hanson showed up and rocked out to Robyn, indie darlings Vampire Weekend and Cisco Adler’s new band Schwayze.
Josh Kelley, who recently wed Katherine Heigl and the pics were featured in OK!, flew to Austin for the Men’s Vogue and Cole Haan party crooning to a packed Austin crowd. The singer reports he’s currently going on tour with Collective Soul and starting some new hip hop collaborations with a few artists. Hip hop, huh? Very interesting… Also at the party the cast members of Friday Night Lights were seen drinking Barefoot wine all night. Yummy!
