Touring With Kenny Chesney

May 12th, 2009

Kenny Chesney loves life on the road with Miranda Lambert and Lady Antebellum.

“The great thing about my life and my job is no two days are ever the same,” the 41-year-old country crooner tells me. “The only thing that’s the same is that catering is at 12 and 5. Other than that, no two days are ever the same, other than I do have the meet-and-greet every night at 7:00. All the stuff in between is different every single day. It breaks up the monotony. I’m in a different city every day, I’m surrounded by a different crowd every night.”

He continues, “My day is usually spent working out, trying to write a song, maybe doing an interview or two, killing time, playing basketball, listening to music and trying to get my mind ready and into a place where I’m supposed to really go through and do what I’m supposed to do or what I’m there to do. When 9:00 rolls around, put on a great show.”

One thing Kenny requires? A vaporizer.

“It’s not on my tour rider, but I have a vaporizer in my bus that I pour this Vicks vaporizing stuff into. I sit and breathe steam all day so it’ll moisturize my throat because I’m pretty hard on it. You know, I talk a lot and I sing really hard on stage at night. That’s one thing that I’ve not been able to live without for the last couple years.”

His prized possession is a guitar from Eddie Van Halen.

“That’s pretty cool. It’s something to hang on the wall. I was a big Van Halen fan growing up, and he went out on the road with me and gave me a guitar so it’s pretty cool.”

Kenny, Miranda and Lady Antebellum play Verizon Wireless Center Birmingham in Pelham, Ala., on Thursday.

Carrie Underwood Wins Big at CMAs

November 13th, 2008

The stars certainly shone last night at the 42nd Annual Country Music Association awards, and there were more than a few familiar faces.

Carrie Underwood, who also hosted and performed at the ceremony, won Best Female Vocalist for the third year in a row. The country darling, who’s rocketed to stardom since winning American Idol, even moved her mom to tears when she took the stage to sing "Just a Dream."

"Mama, it’s real hard to sing when you’re in the second row crying," she teased.

Kenny Chesney continued his streak of big wins at the awards as well, scooping up the top prize of Entertainer of the Year for the fourth time in five years. Carrie’s co-host Brad Paisley mirrored her win with his second consecutive award for Best Male Vocalist.

Sugarland capitalized on their suprising win last year for Best Duo and nabbed that prize again to start their own string of wins. In 2007 fans were surprised when the twosome dethroned longtime winners Brooks & Dunn.

Country legend George Strait is used to toting him awards, and he also shocked no one this year by snagging the prize for Best Album for  Troubadour, minutes after leaving the stage for his performance of "River of Love."

With all these repeat winners there weren’t many surprises, but hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Kenny Chesney: I Flirted With Shania!

November 13th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Country star Kenny Chesney knows a thing or two about hooking up — and even more about breaking up — in the spotlight, having met, married and split from actress Renée Zellweger in less than nine months in 2005. So it’s no surprise that he’d have some things to say to fellow country superstar Shania Twain to help her get over her break from ex-husband Mutt Lange.

"I flirted with her!" he joked at the Country Music Awards in Nashville on Wednesday night, where he was awarded the Entertainer of the Year award by Shania, making her first public appearance since splitting from Mutt in May.

In all seriousness, Kenny did have this to share about having your love life be the stuff headlines are made of: "Relationships are hard anyway — for anybody — but it’s even tougher when your life is a spectator sport."

It’s been a rough few months for Shania, who saw her marriage of 15 years crumble amid charges of infidelity with the couple’s longtime personal assistant. "She’s an amazing artist. She can do anything she wants to do," said Kenny. "Great songs are the key."

CMA Nominees Announced

September 10th, 2008

Carrie Underwood has one thing over her nemesis Jessica Simpson: She’s once again in the running to take top honors at this year’s CMA Awards.

The event’s 12 categories were revealed in two rounds on Wednesday morning, proving once again that the show loves Underwood, Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban.  Chesney dominated the competition, scoring a leading seven nominations, including Ablum and Entertainer of the Year.

Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts announced the nominees for the five biggest categories of the show on Good Morning America. Swift herself was nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year, something she was ecstatic to learn.

"I can’t believe it,"she said. "I’m having a really good morning."

Padding out the nominations were country music veterans Alison Krauss, Miranda Lambert and Martina McBride. Jennifer Nettles got six nods, five of which came from her band Sugarland. George Strait lassoed five nominations, including Male Vocalist of the Year.

Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town, Emerson Drive and the Eagles are up for Best Vocal Group.

The night’s top honor, Best Album of the Year is sure to be a battle of the heavyweights. Carrie Underwood’s Carnival Ride, Chesney’s Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates, Alan Jackson’s Good Time, Strait’s Troubadour and Brooks & Dunn’s Cowboy Town will battle it out for the prize.

The remaining contenders were announced by Lady Antebellum and James Otto, both nominees, during a special edition of CMT Insider.

The 42nd annual CMA Awards will take place in Nashville on Nov. 12 and air live on ABC.

How Kenny Chesney Unwinds

August 26th, 2008

Kenny Chesney has grown from his Knoxville, Tennessee, roots into one of country’s biggest stars. The singer, 40, will show off the locations of his inspiration to the contest winner who wins the trip through MasterCard’s Roots of Rock Sweepstakes.

But even though he’s sold more than 30 million records, this superstar remains self-deprecating. “I’m horrible at playing golf,” he laughs.

Working hard got Kenny where he is today. Hm, why is he a self-proclaimed workaholic?

“It’s just the way I grew up,” Kenny tells me. “I come from a family that works very hard and doesn’t take anything for granted. I’m not a very complacent person. I’m always thinking ahead. I’m always trying to be better.”

Although Kenny says he hates Las Vegas because he isn’t a fan of losing money by gambling, he likes to kick back with friends on his boat in the Caribbean when he has a break from touring.

“It’s a sense of freedom that I don’t have on the road. People that live on boats have an emotional attachment to it. I’m no different. We’ve had a lot of parties on my boat, and we’ve had a lot of fun. But still, being able to go down there and get away from the catering trucks and generators on the buses and the ringing in my ears from all the guitar amps, it’s a great way to get away from it.”

Kenny Is a Workaholic

August 22nd, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

Country superstar Kenny Chesney is always trying to hone his talent. To do so, he’s got to work hard, leaving little time for any other hobbies.

"I’m a self-proclaimed workaholic. All I do is work," he tells OK!. "I’m always working on my craft as a songwriter, working on making the show better, working on trying to find that best song."

But when he does take time off, he keeps it pretty simple. "I flush all the road dust off me on my boat in the Caribbean," he says. "And I go home, spend time with my family, sit on the couch, watch television and eat Doritos."

The Knoxville, Tenn. native is now giving one lucky fan the chance to visit him in his home state, see him in concert and visit the places that inspired him growing up, in conjunction with MasterCard’s Roots of Rock Sweepstakes. Log on to priceless.com for your chance to hang out with Kenny!

*NSYNC’s Chris Kirkpatrick Has ‘Gone Country’

August 15th, 2008

*NSYNC’s Chris Kirkpatrick gets back to the music with a stint on Gone Country 2, which premieres tonight at 8/7 C on CMT.

It’s been ten years since I met Chris and JC Chasez backstage at the Odeon in Cleveland when I interviewed them for MTV just as *NSYNC’s second single, Tearin’ Up My Heart, was climbing the charts.

Today, the 36-year-old music man is driving through Cincinnati, Ohio, en route to Toronto, where he’s recording an album as the lead singer of alternative-pop band Nigels 11.

Wait, what happened to country?

“I just wanted to learn what it was like, how it’s written, because it’s a completely different style of music than what I’m used to with the rock, pop and R&B,” he tells me. “Everything about the writing style and the music is different in this genre.”

The show also features judge/host John Rich, and competitors Lorenzo Lamas, Irene Cara, Jackson 5’s Jermaine Jackson, Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach, American Idol’s Mikalah Gordon and actress Sean Young living and working together. They follow in the footsteps of those on the original Gone Country, such as Maureen McCormick and American Idol’s Diana DeGarmo.

The winner will record and release a single on country radio.

Lorenzo and I had to room together, so he was giving me vitamins everyday and telling me workout stuff,” Chris says.

Who is this dating bachelor’s country crush?

Gretchen Wilson,” he tells me. “She’s cool, she’s ballsy, she says what’s on her mind and she doesn’t beat around the bush. She says ‘this is the way I am, I’m a country girl, and either like me or don’t.’ I like the honesty.”

What was his wildest memory from the *NSYNC days?

“We took our motorcycles on tour one year and went riding in every city. That’s what was cool about riding through Cincinnati just now. I was looking around and remembering places where I’d ridden my bike. I got to ride all across the country.”

Chris
tells me his prized possession from their heyday is the mechanical bull from the tour that he now keeps in his garage. “I don’t want to ride it because if you fall off once, you’ll break something.”

I once interviewed Britney Spears backstage when she was opening for *NSYNC. What is his fondest memory of her?

“After shows when she was dating Justin [Timberlake], she’d come on the bus, hang out and talk. She was a really cool chick. She was a real down-to-earth girl. It was cool to get her take as well as our take about everything that was happening at the time — like the huge explosion and how big we’d get. We were all a part of it. She’s a smart girl.”

These days, Chris has no plans to move to Nashville, but he’s been back twice since taping Gone Country 2 – and his uncle lives there.

What’s his favorite thing to do in Nashville?

“I like the Wildhorse Saloon, the place we performed,” he says. “It’s a cool atmosphere, it has a cool vibe. There’s people line-dancing, there’s plenty to eat and drink, you just sit around and listen to music and watch people dance. People are dancing to hip-hop music, line-dancing. That’s cool.”

Chris hopes to work behind-the-scenes writing and producing country songs. He’s already gotten a headstart with his production company, Working Class Industries, and he’s hosted Kenny Chesney and Dave Matthews in his home studio. “I haven’t worked with the Dixie Chicks, but I’m not opposed to it.”

He nixes any more reality shows like Dancing With The Stars with the firm “definitely not.”

“This is it for me,” he says. “I’m a musician first; I love music. I did this show because I wanted to learn about a genre of music I didn’t know about. I love being around music no matter whether I’m behind the console or in front of the crowd.”

Catch Chris on Gone Country 2, which airs tonight at
8/7 C on CMT.

Kenny Chesney Wins Big at Academy of Country Music Awards

May 19th, 2008 / Author: OK! Staff

In what has become an annual tradition, country superstar Kenny Chesney took home the Entertainer of the Year title at Sunday night’s 43rd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards ceremony in Las Vegas, marking the fourth year in a row that he’s won the Academy’s top trophy.

The former hubby of Renée Zellweger wasn’t the only country star to have a big night on Sunday. Honky-tonk hunk Brad Paisley did double duty in the winner’s circle, taking home honors for both Best Male Vocalist and for Video of the Year for his song, "Online." Also winning twice last night were the folks of Sugarland, who picked up awards for Single of the Year and Song of the Year for their hit, "Stay."

Continuing her domination of all-things-awards, Carrie Underwood once again claimed victory in the Top Female Vocalist category. During the ceremony, the former American Idol champ joined Best Male Vocalist Paisley onstage to sing "Make the World Go Away," in tribute to country legend Eddy Arnold, who passed away on May 8 at the age of 89.

Kenny Chesney’s On The Road Again

May 2nd, 2008

Kenny Chesney spoke to Extra about an accident that happened during his concert last week. The country singer got his foot caught between a moving platform and the stage.

He said, "I was literally in shock for two or three songs." He continued, "I had my foot over the side of the elevator. As it was coming up, the elevator sort of went flush with my foot in the middle and no one could do anything."

He adds, "It took them awhile to get to me. It’s a pretty vulnerable position to be in."

Although Kenny was in pain, he never considered ending the concert early.  " I knew those people [in the audience] had been out there all day. Pure adrenaline is what got me through that show."

For more with Kenny check out tonight’s Extra.
