Stars Share Thanksgiving Memories, Traditions

November 27th, 2008

Beyonce’s mom Tina Knowles is in the kitchen cooking up a big meal this Thanksgiving. She tells me her specialty is Cajun turkey, and the “whole family will be eating dinner together.”

So, why is Beyonce a great daughter? “She’s a great person first. She’s kind and thoughtful.”

Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley will spend the day with brother Josh Kelley and his wife Katherine Heigl – in addition to about sixty members of his family and friends.

“We’ve got a lot of turkeys and hams, and I’m always the one out there playing basketball and baseball with all the little nephews and nieces and all the little kids,” Charles tells me.

What’s Katherine like as a sister-in-law? “She’s great! She’s awesome. It’ll be fun.”

Ne-Yo is another star heading back home. “My mom calls me and says ‘Ne-Yo, I know you’ve been busy doing this all year, but you are coming home for Thanksgiving, right?’” he says. “And there is no other answer but yes. Me and my mom are tight.”

And it’s all about family for Aubrey O’Day. “Spending time with my grandparents was the biggest tradition before I started working in the industry,” the Danity Kane singer tells me. “I rarely get to see them. Grandparents are so wise, and they have so many interesting things to instill in you. Most people go to Thanksgiving and they don’t really talk to their grandparents. They’re like ‘oh, yeah, they’re old, let them sit at the table, walk them over when food comes.’ But if you actually sit down and ask your grandparents about their life – I asked my grandma about being in love, the first time she kissed a guy – things that you don’t think to ask your grandparents. But the way that they see life and values and ideals and the things that they can instill in you are valuable.”

This year my sister Stephanie will be like Miley Cyrus, who often celebrates her birthday on Thanksgiving. Steph turns 23 on her Thanksgiving birthday today.

Miley says, “I love it because then you’re able to have dinner with your family on your birthday. When some people don’t get to come together for their birthday, I get the opportunity to never miss all the family being there, so it’s really great. And I get better food, better cake because we all have to share, so it’s good.”

Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles can’t wait to taste green bean casserole this holiday, but Kerry Washington is all about the turkey. “Turkey really does make you sleepy,” she tells me. “It has that chemical in it. What’s better than eating a big meal and then falling asleep on the couch? It’s fantastic. That’s the best thing about Thanksgiving – everybody’s dazed and confused after their meal.” But don’t expect Kerry to slave away in the kitchen. “When it comes to cooking, I make an excellent reservation.”

Milla Jovovich
, however, will be working overtime.

“I cook turkey and stuffing, but I make these amazing candied yams and it really sucks because I’m training right now and trying to get back into shape,” Milla says. “My trainer’s like ‘OK, one day you can do Thanksgiving.’ I’m like ‘what about leftovers?’”

Marcia Gay Harden and family – who have become vegetarians – may enjoy an organic turkey. “I never want to be strict – I never want to be one of those people who go ‘oh my God, I’m eating a turkey.’ I don’t believe that. I’ve eaten it before. I wear leather shoes. I don’t want to be a hypocrite.”

What is Rihanna most thankful for this year? “I’m thankful to be alive and have my family and my friends around me,” the Umbrella singer tells me. “Being able to do stuff that I love to do and live my dream, and live it in a way I didn’t expect.”

30 Rock star Katrina Bowden is traveling. “My family and I always go down to visit my cousins in Tennessee,” she tells me. “We always drive thirteen hours, and it’s quite long.”

Justine Bateman’s favorite part of Thanksgiving is eating dinner, but that’s not all. “I like the decorations for holidays as much as I like the holidays themselves,” she laughs.

Thanksgiving is on top of the list for Darius Rucker.

“Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because the eating – I love everything about it,” the Hootie and the Blowfish singer tells me. “Down South, we have macaroni and cheese and the stuffing and turkey and collard greens, okra soup and all the stuff that I love. I love Thanksgiving. Then you get three football games. What a great day! Thanksgiving’s a great day.”

For Desperate Housewives star Dana Delany, it’s a time for pet peeves. “One that drives me crazy is that my brother seems to get all the leftovers. He grabs them first!”

Victoria’s Secret model Selita Ebanks will take part in the typical tradition. “Every Thanksgiving Day my mother decorates the house for Christmas – ever since I was a little girl it was like ‘get ready for Christmas.’ Christmas is the important holiday.”

Who’s getting up early for the Black Friday sales? That’s always a big deal in our home, but I’m always the late sleeper.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Kerry Washington Speaks Up

October 15th, 2008

If it were up to her, Kerry Washington wouldn’t let another woman go uninformed about the risk of ovarian cancer. And now the Lakeview Terrace actress is teaming up with L’Oréal to raise awareness with the help of the Color of Hope bag, lipstick and necklace from the beauty company. OK! chatted with Kerry recently to get behind her own personal story.

OK!: What made you decide to get involved?

One of the reasons why I decided to work with L’Oréal is because of all the philanthropic work that they do in the community. I feel like they’re not a company that tries to take advantage of women’s insecurities by making women feel not good enough so they have to go and buy makeup to feel good about themselves. Instead, they really believe in the work of women and that women deserve to look good and
feel good every single day. And part of that is health and their commitment to women’s health and ovarian cancer. They are really leading the way. It’s frightening how we don’t have the kind of research and development that we need for ovarian cancer. When it comes to breast cancer, we know how to do early detection. The research is there, but for ovarian cancer, that just doesn’t exist and by the time people know, it’s too late.

OK!: Your mom is a cancer survivor, how was that affected your life?

Yes, my mom is a breast cancer survivor and part of the reason she is a survivor is because of early detection so I understand the importance of early detection. If it wasn’t for the advancements in technology that allow for early detection in breast cancer, I probably wouldn’t have my mother today.

OK!: Christina Applegate’s mom also had cancer. Does that make you scared that you could be diagnosed with cancer too?

I think that one of the great things is, the more that we learn to be open with the information and to talk about it, the more we can communicate with our healthcare providers. I’m really lucky that because the information is out there and people like you are willing to cover it, and people like Christina are willing to talk about it, more women are having the courage to talk to their healthcare providers and take care of themselves.

OK!: Do you think celebs speaking out has helped bring awareness?

I think whenever a woman talks openly and honestly about health, it encourages other women to do the same.

OK!: What’s your favorite beauty product right now?

I am of course loving the Color of Hope bag. It’s similar to the Red collection, where you can spend your money how we girls like to spend money on ourselves to look good. You can actually feel good about it too by buying the Color of Hope bag, you’re not just being good to yourself, but you’re being good to woman all over the world to help raise awareness and help find a cure. You can buy the lipstick separately or the bag, and all  money [from the purchases] goes directly to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and helping to improve technology so that we have a way to know earlier on and help find a cure.

Will, Jada Crash ‘Lakeview Terrace’ Premiere

September 20th, 2008

Will Smith commands the spotlight when he and Jada Pinkett Smith dash into the Lakeview Terrace premiere held at AMC Lincoln Square in NYC. Her brother, Caleeb, has a role in the flick, and the family is out in full force to support.

Will, who produced the thriller, runs through. “I’m a fantastic neighbor!” he says emphatically.

Samuel L. Jackson plays a bad cop and Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington are his interracial-couple neighbors in the film that is in theaters now.

Hey Will, why Sam for bad cop?

“He has the specific karma to let it all out,” Will says. “He has the specific point of view. I saw Sam from day one with that thing.”

Eva La Rue says Britney Spears would make the worst neighbor. Why? “Can you imagine trying to get out of your driveway every morning with everybody else parked with coffee and doughnuts waiting for her to get up and come out and drive down the street?” she tells me. “I’m sure it would just be a nightmare. Poor thing.”

Here’s Kerry. “Good to see you!” she says. And who would be her pick for worst celeb neighbor? “I would hate to say,” kind and thoughtful Kerry tells me. “You might think that somebody’s going to be a bad neighbor, and then they might surprise you. That’s the miracle of the human spirit.”

Star Jones slides through, looking super-amazing for her. She’s dating a chef, so what’s her favorite dish he cooks for her? “None of your business!” she says, laughing.

Samuel’s worst neighbor? None other than John McCain. “He’s too short,” he tells me.

Patrick is married to Dagmara Dominczyk, whose sister Marika is married to Felicity’s Scott Foley – who was once married to Jennifer Garner (who is now married to Ben Affleck). Tangled web, right? (He also appears with Katie Holmes in All My Sons on Broadway now.)

What’s the key to a happy marriage?

“Communication,” Patrick tells me. “For me, that’s really the important thing. Talking, communicating, trying to be on the same page about everything and making the right decisions.”

Lakeview Terrace is in theaters now.

Stars Can’t Wait for Katie!

September 16th, 2008

After months of seeing Katie Holmes walk to rehearsal for her Broadway debut in All My Sons – sometimes with husband Tom Cruise and daughter Suri – the curtain is about to rise on previews of the play starting Sept. 19, and her celebrity friends are already saying good things!

When asked if she’d be seeing Katie perform on Broadway, pal Jada Pinkett Smith told OK! at the premiere of Lakeview Terrace in NYC last night, "I sure will! Absolutely."

While Kerry Washington says she will also be going to see All My Sons, she’ll be there to support Lakeview Terrace co-star and theater veteran Patrick Wilson, as well, who is also starring in the play. She doesn’t think Katie should be nervous for her first Broadway experience, however.

"I think she’s a talented girl," Kerry tells OK!, "and I think it’s great that she’s doing theater."

As for Patrick, he says it’s "great" working with Katie.

"The play is demanding of all of us," he tells OK!. "You don’t really have time for anything but concentrating on the script, so we’re all jumping in feet first."

Rosario Dawson Celebrates V-Day

April 14th, 2008

It may be April, but that didn’t stop Rosario Dawson from celebrating V-Day — albeit it was a very different kind of V-Day.

The actress was one of the many stars present at V To The Tenth in New Orleans over the weekend, an event founded by Vagina Monologues playwright Eve Ensler aimed at celebrating V-Day’s 10 years of ending violence against women and girls and to honor the women of New Orleans and the Gulf South.

“I think it’s really important to show what people never want to talk about, that there are tremendous atrocities happening in our own backyard,” Rosario tells OK! of the significance of the event. “In three years, so many people forget about what happened [with Hurricane Katrina]. Just even traveling around the Ninth Ward and then going to the French Quarter, people are going, ‘Where’s the problem, I don’t see it.’ Unless you get in a car and drive, you can’t see it.

Stars, including Kerry Washington, Ali Larter, Jennifer Beals and Amber Tamblyn, performed skits and monologues empowering women and shedding light on past cruelties. Rosario performed a moving piece about a Bosnian refugee who was repeatedly raped by soldiers, reducing the crowd to tears.

“I was blown away,” Ali tells OK! “I thought Rosario was incredible.” The performance was the least lighthearted out of all of the skits, ranging from feigned orgasms (Jennifer) to accepting how a vagina looks (Kerry).

“That piece is a really difficult piece,” Rosario says. “It’s such a heavy piece that there is no getting around it. Everyone always calls it the most difficult piece out of all of them. It’s very heavy, there’s no jokes in it, no laughs, there’s no relief. It just keeps getting stronger and harder until the end where it’s just hopeless. I was just glad that we got that out there and people came up and said it really touched them."

Jessica Simpson, Deborah Norville get into dressing drama at ACE Awards

November 13th, 2007 / Author: Valerie Nome

Jessica Simpson and Deborah Norville show up to the Accessories Council Eleventh Annual ACE Awards wearing the same Michael Kors leopard-print frock, and everything goes haywire.

Jessica, who is sniffly and coughing, receives a glass of water from an assistant mid-TV interview. She poses for photos and gives a wave sprinkled with a cutesy “thank you.” She has a huge cut on her left leg, and her rep cancels print interviews because her “feet hurt.” Ouch!
